Chapter 4: The Message That Changed Everything

For several seconds, my father stared at Margaret's phone without saying a word.

The message from Daniel Mercer remained on the screen.

*DON'T LET DANIELLE LEAVE THE HOTEL UNTIL WE TALK.*

My stomach tightened.

"Dad?""

He looked at me immediately.

"You're not in danger, sweetheart.""

"Then why does someone in your company want me kept here?""

He didn't answer right away.

Instead, he handed the folder back to Margaret.

"Call Daniel.""

Margaret hesitated.

"Richard, are you sure?""

"Put him on speaker.""

She pressed the call button.

It rang once.

Twice.

On the third ring, a familiar male voice answered.

"Margaret. Finally.""

"Daniel, Richard is here.""

There was a pause.

Then Daniel Mercer laughed nervously.

"Richard! I've been trying to reach you.""

My father folded his arms.

"Interesting. Your message suggests otherwise.""

Daniel cleared his throat.

"I heard there was an unfortunate incident at the Sterling Crown. Victoria called me. Apparently, Danielle misunderstood a situation, and things got out of hand.""

I stared at the phone.

Misunderstood?

My father looked at me, then spoke.

"My daughter was slapped in the face while holding her newborn.""

Daniel sighed.

"Richard, I understand you're upset, but we need to be careful. Victoria represents a significant investment opportunity.""

"Did you see the footage?""

"No.""

"Then stop explaining what happened.""

Another pause.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Look, Richard, I think we should discuss this privately. The acquisition is too important to jeopardize over an emotional confrontation.""

My father glanced at Margaret.

"Did you hear that?""

"Every word," she replied.

"Daniel, answer one question. Did you authorize Victoria Hale's consulting contract?""

"Yes.""

"Did you authorize payments totaling four hundred and eighty thousand dollars?""

"Those payments were approved under the company's advisory budget.""

"Did you authorize the inclusion of family foundation assets in the acquisition proposal?""

Silence.

Then Daniel said, "I don't know what you're talking about.""

My father opened the folder.

"There's a document bearing my signature.""

"Then someone must have made a mistake.""

"I never signed it.""

Daniel's voice changed.

"Richard, listen to me. These things happen in complicated transactions.""

"Forging my signature is not a transaction complication.""

"Nobody forged anything.""

"Then explain why your office submitted an authorization I never approved.""

Daniel exhaled sharply.

"Perhaps we should meet.""

"Where?""

"At the hotel.""

My father looked at the entrance.

"You're welcome to come.""

"Not with all those people watching.""

My father smiled coldly.

"Then you might want to reconsider your priorities.""

He ended the call.

Margaret immediately looked at him.

"Richard, we need to secure the corporate records before Daniel realizes we're investigating.""

"Already thinking about it.""

He turned toward James.

"Contact the IT security team. Suspend Daniel's remote access to financial records, but preserve every login history, email, and document. Nobody deletes anything.""

"Understood.""

"And get legal counsel here.""

James nodded and walked away.

I stood beside my father, trying to understand what was happening.

"Dad, I thought you owned the company. How can Daniel do all this without you knowing?""

My father rubbed his forehead.

"Because I trusted him.""

He looked toward the windows.

"Daniel has worked with me for nineteen years. He helped build the company when we had only three hotels. I gave him authority because I believed he shared my values.""

"Maybe he did once.""

My father looked at me.

"That's what worries me.""

Grace stirred in my arms.

I gently rocked her.

"Can we talk somewhere quieter?""

"Of course.""

My father led us into the executive lounge, where a private sitting room overlooked the city.

A hotel employee brought water and a bottle of warm formula.

My father pulled out a chair.

"Sit down, sweetheart.""

I settled Grace into my arms.

For the first time since arriving, I noticed how exhausted I was.

My cheek still hurt.

My shoulders ached.

And I hadn't eaten anything since breakfast.

My father noticed.

"Have you eaten?""

I shook my head.

He turned toward the employee.

"Please bring her something warm to eat. And make sure there's a comfortable place for the baby.""

When we were alone, he sat opposite me.

"There's something I should have told you a long time ago.""

I looked up.

"About what?""

"Your grandfather's estate.""

I frowned.

"What does Grandpa have to do with this?""

My father took a slow breath.

"Before he died, your grandfather created the Brooks Family Foundation. It owns several properties, including the original Sterling Crown building.""

I nodded.

I'd heard about the foundation.

My grandfather had been a successful businessman, but he'd died when I was young.

I remembered his warm hands, his old-fashioned suits, and the way he used to sneak chocolate into my pockets.

"What about it?""

"Your grandfather placed specific restrictions on the foundation's assets. They were never supposed to be sold or transferred without approval from the family trustees.""

"Okay.""

"Your mother was one of the original trustees.""

I looked at him.

"My mother?""

He nodded.

My mother, Elizabeth Brooks, had died when I was seventeen.

After her death, my father had rarely discussed the foundation.

I knew she had been involved in charitable work, but I hadn't understood how deeply.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because you were young. And because I wanted you to have a life that wasn't defined by our family's money.""

I looked down at Grace.

"That's why you never wanted me working for the company?""

"Exactly.""

He leaned forward.

"You built your own career. You married, started your family, and chose a quieter life. I respected that.""

I smiled faintly.

"Sometimes I wondered whether you thought I wasn't capable of running anything.""

His expression softened.

"Danielle, I never doubted your ability. I worried that people would treat you differently because of my name.""

I looked toward the window.

"Well, today they treated me differently because they didn't know it.""

He nodded.

"That's the part I can't stop thinking about.""

A knock interrupted us.

Margaret entered, carrying a second folder.

"Richard, we have a problem.""

My father stood.

"What happened?""

"Daniel's assistant just informed us that he's left the corporate headquarters.""

"Where is he going?""

"She doesn't know. But he took several personal files from his office.""

My father frowned.

"Did she see what was inside?""

"Some of them were labeled Sterling Crown acquisition.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"He's destroying evidence?""

"We don't know yet," Margaret replied.

My father picked up his phone.

"James.""

The security director answered immediately.

"Sir?""

"Find Daniel Mercer. Do not confront him. Just establish his location and inform legal counsel.""

"Understood.""

Margaret hesitated.

"Richard, there's another issue.""

My father closed his eyes.

"Please tell me this isn't another one.""

"It's about Victoria.""

"What about her?""

"Her investment group has already contacted two other hotels in our portfolio.""

"Why?""

"They're telling management teams that the acquisition is effectively complete and that leadership changes are coming.""

My father stared at her.

"Who authorized that announcement?""

"Daniel's office.""

I looked at him.

"Are they trying to take over the hotels before the deal is approved?""

My father nodded slowly.

"That's what it looks like.""

Margaret placed the folder on the table.

"There's something else. One of the documents lists a proposed new managing director for the Sterling Crown.""

My father opened it.

I watched his eyes move down the page.

Then he stopped.

"What is it?"" I asked.

He turned the document toward me.

There was a name printed beneath the heading.

*PROPOSED GENERAL MANAGER: VICTORIA HALE.*

I almost laughed.

The woman who had slapped me was supposed to become the person responsible for running the hotel.

My father closed the folder.

"Not anymore.""

Margaret looked at him.

"Richard, we should be careful. If Daniel has already promised her that position, he may have made commitments we're not aware of.""

"Then we'll find out what he promised.""

My phone buzzed.

I glanced down.

An unknown number.

The message contained only one sentence.

*Your father isn't telling you everything about the foundation. Ask him what happened to your mother's final letter.*

I read it twice.

My fingers went cold.

"Dad?""

He looked up.

"What's wrong?""

I handed him my phone.

He read the message.

For the first time that afternoon, his expression wasn't angry.

It was frightened.

"Who sent this?"" I whispered.

"I don't know.""

"What's my mother's final letter?""

He sat down slowly.

Then he looked at Margaret.

"Leave us alone for a moment.""

Margaret nodded and stepped outside.

My father looked at me.

"Danielle, there are things about your mother's death and the foundation that I've never discussed with you.""

My heart began pounding.

"Why?""

He stared at the message again.

"Because I promised your mother I would protect you from them.""

I held Grace closer.

"What things?""

My father opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, someone knocked hard on the private lounge door.

James entered.

"Mr. Brooks, Daniel Mercer is here.""

My father stood.

"Where?""

"Main lobby.""

James hesitated.

"He's not alone.""

"Who is with him?""

James looked at me.

"Your husband, sir.""

I stopped breathing.

May you like

Because my husband, Ethan, had told me that morning he was working out of town.

And suddenly, I understood that the secrets in my father's company might be much closer to my own family than I had ever imagined.
