Chapter 3: The Camera Footage Nobody Wanted Seen
My father didn't raise his voice.
That was how I knew he was furious.
"Margaret," he said, "cancel tomorrow's approval meeting.""
She blinked.
"Richard, the board has already—"
"Cancel it.""
"But the investors—"
"I don't care what the investors have scheduled.""
Victoria stepped forward.
"Mr. Brooks, you can't seriously jeopardize a multimillion-dollar transaction over a personal misunderstanding.""
My father turned toward her.
"Personal misunderstanding?""
She exhaled impatiently.
"I've already explained that the situation was unfortunate.""
"You hit my daughter.""
"I regret that things became physical.""
"That's not an apology.""
Victoria's mouth tightened.
"I am not going to stand here and be treated like a criminal.""
My father nodded toward James, who had just returned with a security supervisor.
"Then perhaps you should stop behaving like someone who believes money puts her above the law.""
James carried a tablet.
"The recording has been secured, sir.""
"Show me.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Mr. Brooks, perhaps we should review it in the management office.""
"No. Play it here.""
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
"With all these guests?""
My father glanced around.
"Yes. They witnessed what happened. They deserve to know whether they were right to remain silent.""
James connected the tablet to a nearby display used for hotel announcements.
A moment later, the security recording appeared.
The camera angle showed the entire lounge.
There I was, sitting on the sofa, gently rocking Grace.
Victoria entered the frame.
Her lips moved, though the recording had no sound.
She stood over me.
I could see myself looking up, trying to respond politely.
Then Victoria leaned closer.
I shifted Grace.
Victoria raised her hand.
And slapped me.
The soundless recording somehow made the moment even worse.
My daughter's tiny body jerked.
My arms immediately tightened around her.
I watched myself look toward the front desk, stunned.
Then Victoria adjusted her bracelet.
The recording continued.
It showed me approaching Marcus.
It showed him listening to Victoria.
It showed him pointing toward the entrance.
And it showed Victoria smiling.
Nobody in the lobby spoke.
When the footage ended, my father looked at Marcus.
"Do you still believe there was a misunderstanding?""
Marcus's face was pale.
"No, sir.""
"Do you still believe my daughter was the person causing trouble?""
"No.""
"Then explain why you ordered her to leave.""
Marcus looked down.
"I made the wrong decision.""
"You made several.""
My father turned toward Margaret.
"I want a full review of this hotel's guest complaint records. Every incident involving accusations of discrimination, harassment, or staff misconduct during Marcus's tenure.""
Marcus's head lifted.
"Mr. Brooks, that's unnecessary.""
My father looked at him.
"Unnecessary?""
"One incident shouldn't define my entire career.""
"One incident?""
My father pointed toward the display.
"That woman struck a mother holding a three-week-old child. You watched her do it and rewarded her by defending her.""
Marcus's lips parted.
"I didn't see the actual assault.""
"You didn't bother to look.""
That silenced him.
Then Olivia, the younger woman who had accompanied Victoria, stepped forward.
"Mr. Brooks?""
Victoria immediately turned.
"Olivia, don't.""
The younger woman swallowed.
"I think there's something else you should see.""
Victoria grabbed her arm.
"Stop talking.""
Olivia pulled away.
"Don't touch me.""
A murmur spread through the lobby.
My father looked at her.
"What's your name?""
"Olivia Grant.""
"Ms. Grant, what is it?""
She glanced at Victoria, then at the security supervisor.
"I recorded what happened.""
Victoria's face went white.
"What?""
Olivia reached into her handbag and pulled out her phone.
"I started recording when Victoria began arguing with Danielle.""
Victoria stepped toward her.
"Give me that.""
"No.""
"Olivia, I said give it to me.""
"I don't work for you.""
Victoria's expression turned vicious.
"You ungrateful little—"
James stepped between them.
"Mrs. Hale, please remain where you are.""
Olivia looked at me.
"I'm sorry.""
I frowned.
"For what?""
"For not saying anything sooner.""
She unlocked her phone.
"I should have stopped her.""
I looked at her trembling hands.
"You were frightened.""
"That doesn't make it right.""
She handed the phone to James.
The video was thirty-seven seconds long.
It began with Victoria approaching me.
This time, the audio was clear.
"People like you shouldn't be in this hotel.""
My stomach tightened.
Then my own voice.
"I'm sorry?""
Victoria's response was unmistakable.
"You heard me. This place has standards.""
The video continued.
It captured the slap.
Then Victoria's words.
"You people always have an excuse.""
But the worst part came afterward.
After I turned toward Marcus to ask for help, Victoria walked toward Olivia.
And Olivia's phone captured every word.
"Watch this," Victoria said.
"He'll throw her out before she can finish complaining.""
Olivia had whispered, "Victoria, you shouldn't have hit her.""
Victoria laughed.
"Please. Marcus knows who pays the bills around here.""
The video ended.
My father watched it twice.
Then he handed the phone back to James.
"Preserve that recording. Make a copy and document its chain of custody.""
James nodded.
Victoria's face had gone from pink to almost gray.
"That's a private conversation.""
Olivia looked at her.
"You said it in a public lobby.""
Victoria pointed at her.
"You've just destroyed your career.""
Olivia's voice shook.
"Maybe. But at least I won't have to lie about what happened.""
My father turned toward Margaret.
"Now I want to know something. Why does Mrs. Hale believe Marcus knows who pays the bills?""
Margaret didn't answer immediately.
Marcus looked toward her.
Then toward Victoria.
For the first time, I noticed that both of them seemed frightened of the same thing.
My father noticed it too.
"Margaret?""
She opened her folder again.
"Mrs. Hale's investment group has been providing consulting services to the hotel for the last eight months.""
"Under whose authorization?""
"Daniel Mercer's office.""
My father looked at her.
"Daniel hired them?""
"Yes.""
"Without my approval?""
Margaret hesitated.
"The agreement was structured as a preliminary advisory contract. It didn't require a full board vote.""
My father rubbed his forehead.
"How much have we paid them?""
"Approximately four hundred and eighty thousand dollars.""
My mouth fell open.
"Four hundred and eighty thousand?""
Margaret nodded.
Victoria recovered slightly.
"The consulting services were legitimate.""
My father ignored her.
"Who received the payments?""
Margaret looked down at the folder.
"The Hale Strategic Advisory Group.""
"And who owns that company?""
Margaret hesitated.
"Victoria Hale.""
My father slowly closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he opened them.
"James, call our legal department. I want every invoice, email, contract, and payment involving that company secured.""
James immediately stepped aside to make the call.
Victoria lifted her chin.
"This is becoming ridiculous. Those payments were approved through normal channels.""
"Then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.""
My father looked at Margaret.
"Was the investment proposal connected to those consulting payments?""
Margaret nodded reluctantly.
"The proposal includes a clause allowing the investor group to acquire a controlling interest in the subsidiary if the transaction closes.""
My father stared at her.
"Who negotiated that clause?""
"Daniel.""
"Who reviewed it?""
"Daniel.""
"Who recommended Victoria's company?""
"Daniel.""
My father looked at the display again.
The frozen image showed Victoria's hand raised beside my face.
He turned toward her.
"Mrs. Hale, I believe this conversation is over.""
Victoria straightened.
"You cannot dismiss me from a transaction simply because you're angry.""
"I'm not dismissing you because I'm angry.""
He leaned forward slightly.
"I'm suspending all negotiations because I have reason to believe the company may have been manipulated by people who expected me not to look too closely.""
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
"You'll regret this.""
My father gave a humorless smile.
"That sounds remarkably similar to a threat.""
"I'm simply telling you that powerful people are involved.""
"Then perhaps they'll be interested in the evidence.""
Victoria looked toward Marcus.
"Tell him.""
Marcus didn't move.
"Marcus!""
He swallowed.
"I don't know what you want me to say.""
Victoria stepped closer.
"Tell him about the arrangement.""
My father went still.
"What arrangement?""
Marcus's eyes widened.
Victoria immediately realized her mistake.
"Nothing. He's confused.""
But my father had already heard enough.
"Marcus?""
The manager looked at the floor.
Then he looked at me.
"I was told that Mrs. Hale's group would be taking over hotel operations after the transaction.""
My father nodded.
"And?""
Marcus's voice dropped.
"I was encouraged to make sure she was satisfied with her visits. I was told her approval could influence my position after the acquisition.""
Margaret looked stunned.
"Who told you that?""
Marcus hesitated.
"Mr. Mercer.""
My father didn't move.
"Daniel Mercer told you to prioritize Victoria Hale over other guests?""
Marcus nodded.
"He said she was important to the future of the hotel.""
Victoria threw her hands up.
"That is being taken completely out of context!""
My father turned toward her.
"Then give us the context.""
She didn't answer.
I shifted Grace in my arms.
She had fallen asleep again, her little cheek resting against my shoulder.
I looked at the woman who had hit me.
A few minutes earlier, she'd believed she could decide who belonged in the hotel.
Now she was standing in the middle of its lobby, surrounded by witnesses, while the people she'd expected to protect her were backing away.
But I wasn't satisfied.
Not yet.
"Mr. Reed?""
Marcus turned toward me.
"Yes, Ms. Brooks?""
"How many people have you treated this way?""
He looked confused.
"What?""
"How many guests have you ignored because someone richer complained about them?""
His mouth opened.
I continued.
"How many employees have watched someone get humiliated and stayed silent because they were afraid of losing their jobs?""
Marcus looked down.
"I don't know.""
"Then maybe you should find out.""
My father placed a hand gently on my shoulder.
"She's right.""
He turned toward Margaret.
"I want an independent review. Not one conducted by Daniel's office. Bring in an outside firm.""
"Understood.""
"And Marcus?""
The manager straightened.
"Yes, sir.""
"Effective immediately, you're relieved of your management duties pending investigation.""
Marcus's face crumpled.
"Mr. Brooks, please.""
"Security will escort you to collect your personal belongings. You will not access company systems until the review is complete.""
Victoria let out a sharp laugh.
"You're firing him to impress your daughter?""
My father turned toward her.
"No. I'm holding him accountable for what he did.""
Then he looked at James.
"Mrs. Hale is no longer authorized to access restricted hotel areas or participate in any management meetings while the investigation is underway. Please document everything and coordinate with legal counsel regarding the assault.""
Victoria stared at him.
"You can't do that.""
"I just did.""
Her companion stepped away from her.
Olivia approached me quietly.
"Danielle, I'm really sorry.""
I looked at her.
"Thank you for telling the truth.""
She nodded, wiping her eyes.
"I thought if I spoke up, I'd lose my job.""
"Maybe you would have.""
She looked surprised by my answer.
"But you did it anyway," I added.
"That matters.""
My father looked toward the entrance.
"Let's get you and Grace somewhere comfortable.""
I nodded.
He placed his hand lightly against my back as we walked toward the private elevator.
But before we reached it, Margaret hurried after us.
"Richard, wait.""
He turned.
She held up her folder.
"There's one more thing.""
My father sighed.
"What now?""
Margaret opened to the final page.
"During the review of the proposed acquisition, I found a document attached to Daniel's latest submission. It's a list of properties and assets that would be transferred into the new subsidiary.""
My father glanced at it.
"That's standard.""
"Not this one.""
She pointed to a line near the bottom.
My father read it.
Then he read it again.
His expression changed so dramatically that I stepped closer.
"What is it, Dad?""
He didn't answer immediately.
Margaret lowered her voice.
"The acquisition proposal includes the Brooks Family Foundation's residential property portfolio.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
My father looked at me.
"It means someone is trying to transfer assets that were never supposed to be part of this deal.""
Margaret nodded.
"There's a second document. An authorization bearing your father's name.""
My father took the folder.
He stared at the signature.
Then he shook his head.
"I never signed this.""
The lobby seemed to tilt around me.
"Are you saying someone forged your signature?""
My father looked at the page.
"I don't know yet.""
Then he turned to Margaret.
"Who submitted it?""
She swallowed.
"Daniel Mercer.""
My father slowly closed the folder.
"Get me Daniel on the phone.""
Margaret reached for her mobile.
But before she could dial, her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
Her face drained of color.
"Richard...""
"What?""
She turned the screen toward him.
The caller's name was Daniel Mercer.
And the message beneath it read:
*WE HAVE A PROBLEM. VICTORIA JUST TOLD ME WHAT HAPPENED. DON'T LET DANIELLE LEAVE THE HOTEL UNTIL WE TALK.*
My father read it twice.
Then he looked at me.
For the first time that afternoon, he seemed genuinely afraid.
Because the woman who had slapped me might not have been the person behind the attack.
May you like
She might have been the bait.
And somewhere inside my father's company, someone had just realized that I was standing in the middle of a secret they could no longer afford to keep hidden.
