Chapter 9: The Final Piece of the Puzzle
David couldn’t hear anything except his own heartbeat.
The forest.
The wind.
The sound of the old cabin door moving behind his father.
Everything disappeared.
Because one sentence had changed everything.
“The person who ordered everything is still inside your house.””
David stared at Thomas.
His father.
Alive.
Standing in front of him.
And still somehow bringing another impossible truth.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at him.
The sadness in his eyes was worse than fear.
“David…”
“Who?””
Thomas took a slow breath.
“Before I tell you, you need to understand something.””
David shook his head.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I’ve spent ten years not understanding.””
Thomas looked down.
“I know.””
“You let me bury you.””
The words hurt.
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“You let me believe you were gone.””
“I had no choice.””
David stepped closer.
“No choice?””
His anger finally broke through.
“My entire life changed.””
Thomas nodded.
“I know.””
“You missed birthdays.””
“I know.””
“You missed watching Emily grow up.””
Thomas’s face broke.
“I know.””
The pain in his father’s voice stopped David for a moment.
Because Thomas wasn’t defending himself.
He was carrying the same pain.
“I wanted to come back,” Thomas whispered.
“Then why didn’t you?””
Thomas looked toward the cabin.
“Because every time I tried…”
He paused.
“They reminded me what would happen.””
David frowned.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at him.
“The same person who tried to erase Noah.””
A cold feeling moved through David.
“Victoria?””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
David froze.
“No?””
Thomas walked back inside the cabin.
“Come in.””
David followed.
The cabin was small.
Simple.
Nothing like the Carter mansion.
A table.
Two chairs.
Old photographs.
A wall covered with documents.
David stopped.
The entire room was filled with evidence.
His father had been investigating for years.
Names.
Dates.
Bank records.
Photographs.
And in the center of the wall was one person’s name.
David stared.
His own family name.
Carter.
“What is this?””
Thomas looked at the wall.
“The truth.””
David stepped closer.
The documents connected everything.
Victoria.
The missing money.
Noah.
Lily.
The lies.
But there was one name appearing again and again.
Not Victoria.
Not Eleanor.
Someone else.
David’s breathing changed.
“No.””
Thomas watched him.
“You see it now.””
David shook his head.
“No.””
He pointed at the documents.
“This doesn’t make sense.””
Thomas walked closer.
“It does.””
David looked at him.
“Who?””
Thomas didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Your father-in-law.””
David went still.
“My wife’s father?””
Thomas nodded.
“Robert.””
David stared.
“But he died before Sarah and I got married.””
Thomas shook his head.
“That’s what everyone believed.””
David stepped back.
Another dead person.
Another lie.
“No.””
Thomas looked at him.
“David, your entire family built a world where people disappeared when the truth became dangerous.””
The words hurt because they were true.
David looked at the documents again.
“Why?””
Thomas pointed to a folder.
“Open it.””
David picked it up.
Inside were financial records.
Old contracts.
Photos.
Then he saw it.
A company name.
A business partnership.
His father’s company.
And another name.
Robert Hayes.
Sarah’s father.
“They were partners?””
Thomas nodded.
“Years ago.””
David read through the papers.
“They worked together?””
“Yes.””
“On what?””
Thomas’s face became serious.
“Money laundering.””
David looked up.
“What?””
“Your father-in-law was moving stolen money through businesses. Victoria discovered it.””
David frowned.
“Then why would she help him?””
Thomas smiled sadly.
“Because Victoria wasn’t the person controlling the situation.””
David felt cold.
“Then who was?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Robert.””
“But he’s dead.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
David stepped away.
“Where is he?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
Instead, he handed David a photograph.
The picture was recent.
Taken months ago.
A man standing outside a building.
Older.
But clearly alive.
David stared.
The man was Robert Hayes.
Sarah’s father.
The grandfather of Emily.
His heart sank.
“How?””
Thomas sat down.
“After your father-in-law realized I knew too much, he created a plan.””
“To fake his death?””
“Yes.””
David looked at the picture.
“And everyone thought he was gone.””
Thomas nodded.
“Everyone except the people helping him.””
David thought about it.
Victoria.
Eleanor.
The secrets.
The control.
Everything connected.
“But why hurt Noah?””
Thomas’s expression changed.
“Because Noah saw something.””
“What?””
Thomas looked at him.
“He saw Robert meeting Victoria the night before the accident.””
David froze.
Noah’s face appeared in his mind.
The boy who lost everything.
The boy who knew the truth.
“Then Emily…”
Thomas nodded.
“She found the same evidence.””
David looked down.
“The box.””
“Yes.””
“She found proof that Robert was alive?””
Thomas nodded.
“And proof that he was behind everything.””
David closed his eyes.
That explained Victoria’s fear.
That explained the pool.
She wasn’t trying to punish Emily.
She was trying to stop the evidence from reaching David.
But one question remained.
“Why did Mom protect Victoria?””
Thomas looked away.
“Because Robert threatened her.””
David frowned.
“With what?””
Thomas’s expression became painful.
“With you.””
David looked confused.
“What?””
“He told Eleanor that if she didn’t cooperate, he would destroy your life.””
David shook his head.
“My mother would never—”
He stopped.
Because he had already seen what fear made people do.
Thomas continued.
“She made one terrible choice.””
“To protect me?””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
“She kept making more.””
David looked down.
The pattern.
The silence.
The secrets.
One lie protecting another.
“How do we stop him?””
Thomas looked toward the window.
“We don’t.””
David frowned.
“What?””
Thomas looked back.
“He knows you found me.””
A chill went through David.
“How?””
Thomas pointed outside.
The security camera near the cabin.
David stared.
“You were watching?””
“No.””
Thomas’s voice lowered.
“He was.””
Suddenly, the lights went out.
The cabin fell into darkness.
David turned.
“What happened?””
Thomas immediately moved.
“Get down.””
A loud crack exploded outside.
The window shattered.
David dropped behind the table.
Noah pulled him down.
Another sound.
A car door.
Footsteps.
Someone approaching.
David’s heart raced.
Thomas grabbed an old phone from the table.
“Call the police.””
David looked at him.
“What about you?””
Thomas looked toward the door.
“I’ve been running for ten years.””
A pause.
“I’m done running.””
The door handle moved.
Slowly.
Everyone froze.
Then the door opened.
A figure stepped inside.
David prepared himself.
But when the person entered, he stopped.
Because it wasn’t Robert.
It wasn’t Victoria.
It wasn’t anyone he expected.
It was Sarah.
David stared.
“Sarah?””
Her face was covered in tears.
She looked terrified.
“David…”
He stood.
“What are you doing here?””
She looked at Thomas.
Then at him.
“I came to warn you.””
David’s eyes narrowed.
“About what?””
Sarah took a shaky breath.
“Your father is telling you the truth.””
Everyone froze.
David looked confused.
“What?””
Sarah stepped closer.
“But he’s not telling you everything.””
Thomas’s expression changed.
“Sarah.””
She looked at him.
“You promised you would tell him.””
David stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Sarah looked at David.
Her voice broke.
“The person who ordered everything…”
She looked toward Thomas.
“Wasn’t Robert.””
David felt his stomach drop.
“What?””
Sarah whispered:
“Your father knows who it was.””
Thomas didn’t deny it.
And that was the moment David understood.
His father had brought him here.
Not just to reveal the truth.
But to reveal a secret he was still hiding.
David turned toward Thomas.
“Who?””
Thomas looked away.
A long silence followed.
Then he said:
“The person who started this…”
His voice cracked.
“Was me.””
