Chapter 9: The Father Who Came Back

The hospital went into lockdown.

Police officers filled the corridors. Security guards checked every room, while doctors moved patients away from the emergency exits.

I stood beside Elena's bed, holding Ava's hand.

My mother sat in the corner.

She hadn't spoken since Thomas disappeared.

I couldn't blame her.

Every person in my family seemed to have been living behind a different lie.

My wife had been imprisoned.

My father had faked his death.

My mother had been hidden away.

And somewhere outside the hospital, a man who looked exactly like me was claiming to be my biological father.

Detective Harris entered.

“Mr. Cole, we need to move your family to a secure location.””

“Where is Thomas?””

“We're searching for him.””

“Did he escape?””

The detective hesitated.

“We don't know.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Who is the man in this picture?””

He placed a folder on the table.

“His name is Alexander Reed.””

I opened it.

The first page contained an old photograph.

A young man stood beside my mother.

He had my eyes.

My nose.

The same small scar above the eyebrow.

It was like looking into a mirror from forty years ago.

“Is he my father?””

Detective Harris nodded.

“According to the records we've recovered, yes.””

My mother finally spoke.

“His name was Daniel Reed.””

The detective looked at her.

“Ma'am, the file says Alexander.””

“He changed his name.””

She stood and walked toward the window.

“Daniel was my first husband. We were married for three years. He was kind, but he had problems with gambling. When I became pregnant, he disappeared.””

I stared at her.

“You told me he died.””

“I was told he died.””

She turned.

“Thomas came into our lives when you were two. He said Daniel had been killed in an accident overseas. I believed him.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Then how is he alive?””

My mother swallowed.

“Because Thomas lied.””

Detective Harris opened another document.

“Mr. Reed was involved in a financial dispute with the Cole family. He disappeared after a warehouse fire twenty years ago.””

I looked up.

“What warehouse fire?””

“The one that officially killed him.””

My mother shook her head.

“He didn't die in that fire.””

The detective nodded.

“We've found evidence that the fire was deliberately set.””

I stared at the report.

“By Thomas?””

“We're investigating.””

My mother looked at me.

“Thomas was afraid Daniel would return and claim you.””

I felt anger rise.

“He could have told me the truth.””

“He thought Daniel would destroy our family.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Our family was already destroyed.””

Ava tugged at my sleeve.

“Daddy?””

I crouched.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Is the bad man coming here?””

I looked at her.

“No one is going to get near you.””

She held up her teddy bear.

“Can Mommy sleep with me tonight?””

I looked toward Elena.

My wife smiled weakly.

“Of course, baby.””

A doctor entered with a nurse.

“Mrs. Cole is stable, but she needs rest. We recommend moving her to a private room under police protection.””

I nodded.

“Do it.””

The officers escorted us through a restricted corridor.

As we reached the elevator, my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Who is this?””

A man's voice spoke.

“Hello, Marcus.””

I recognized it from the recording.

The voice from Vanessa's phone.

The voice that had asked whether I was dead.

“Daniel?””

He laughed softly.

“So your mother told you.””

“Where are you?””

“Closer than you think.””

I looked around.

“Stay away from my family.””

“Your family?””

He laughed again.

“You still don't understand, do you?””

“Understand what?””

“I didn't come back for money.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Then what do you want?””

“I want my son.””

“You abandoned me.””

“I was told you were dead.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Your mother told me you died shortly after birth. Thomas showed me the death certificate.””

I looked toward my mother.

She had gone pale.

Daniel continued.

“Years later, I discovered the truth. I learned Thomas had raised you. I tried to contact him, but he threatened to have me arrested.””

“Why didn't you contact me?””

“Because I was trying to find out what had happened.””

I shook my head.

“You were hiding in a cellar.””

“I was hiding from Richard.””

I looked at Detective Harris.

He was watching me.

Daniel's voice became quieter.

“Marcus, listen. Richard isn't working for Evelyn.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Evelyn is working for Richard.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Where is he?””

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Inside your house.””

The call ended.

I looked at Detective Harris.

“Richard is at my mansion.””

He immediately pulled out his radio.

“Dispatch, we need units at the Cole residence. Possible armed suspect inside.””

I looked toward Elena.

“Richard is there.””

Her face went white.

“No.””

“What?””

“He knows where Ava's room is.””

I felt my blood run cold.

The officers hurried us into the secure room.

Ava was placed beside Elena.

My mother sat near the door.

Detective Harris approached me.

“Mr. Cole, I need you to stay here.””

“My daughter is in danger.””

“We have officers heading to the property.””

I looked at him.

“Richard knows every entrance. He helped design the house. He knows the security system better than anyone.””

The detective nodded.

“That's why we're sending a tactical team.””

My phone vibrated again.

This time, it was a video.

I opened it.

The camera showed my mansion.

The familiar marble staircase.

The chandelier.

The portrait of Elena and me hanging above the fireplace.

Then the camera moved toward the living room.

A man was sitting in my father's old armchair.

Richard Hale.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Hello, Marcus.””

I stared at the screen.

Richard lifted a glass of whiskey.

“Nice to see you again.””

I felt my hands tighten.

“What do you want?””

He smiled.

“Your signature.””

“On what?””

“The original trust agreement.””

I glanced at Elena.

She was listening.

Richard continued.

“You see, Vanessa made a mistake. She thought she could control Evelyn. Evelyn thought she could control me. And I thought I could control your father.””

He took a sip.

“Unfortunately, everyone in this family seems to believe they are smarter than they really are.””

“Where is my father?””

Richard smiled.

“Which one?””

I stopped breathing.

He leaned forward.

“Thomas is with me.””

I looked toward my mother.

She closed her eyes.

Richard continued.

“And Daniel is here too.””

I felt sick.

“Let them go.””

“Bring me the original agreement.””

“I don't have it.””

“Your wife does.””

I turned toward Elena.

She slowly shook her head.

Richard laughed.

“Don't bother pretending. Elena found the document years ago. She hid it before the marina incident.””

I looked at my wife.

“Is that true?””

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

She looked toward Ava.

“Somewhere safe.””

Richard leaned closer to the camera.

“Marcus, I don't want to hurt anyone.””

I laughed.

“You've already hurt everyone.””

He shrugged.

“Then let's finish this properly.””

The video suddenly changed.

The camera showed my father sitting on the living room floor.

His hands were tied.

His face was bruised.

Beside him stood a man.

My biological father.

Daniel Reed.

He looked directly at the camera.

“Marcus,” he said.

I leaned closer.

“Dad?””

He shook his head.

“Don't call me that yet.””

I swallowed.

Daniel continued.

“I know you don't trust me. I know I have no right to ask anything from you.””

He looked toward Richard.

“But you need to understand something. The original trust agreement isn't what they want.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“They want the recording.””

“What recording?””

He swallowed.

“The recording your mother made the night Thomas tried to kill her.””

My mother gasped.

Richard immediately struck Daniel across the face.

The video shook.

Then Richard leaned toward the camera.

“Enough talking.””

He smiled.

“Bring me the recording, Marcus. Or your daughter won't live to see tomorrow.””

The video ended.

Ava began crying.

I pulled her into my arms.

Elena sat up.

“Marcus, I know where it is.””

I looked at her.

“Where?””

She pointed toward the pink teddy bear.

Ava looked down.

“Mommy?””

Elena reached for the toy.

“Sweetheart, remember when I told you that Grandpa gave you this bear?””

Ava nodded.

“There's something inside it.””

I turned the teddy bear over.

The stitching along its back was slightly different from the rest.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a tiny memory card wrapped in plastic.

My hands trembled.

“The recording?””

Elena nodded.

“Your father hid it in the toy before Vanessa took me.””

I looked at my daughter.

She had been carrying the evidence that could destroy the people who had terrorized our family.

For months.

Without knowing what it was.

Detective Harris approached.

“Give it to me. We'll have our technical team examine it.””

I held the memory card.

Then I looked at Elena.

“What's on it?””

She swallowed.

“The truth about your mother's disappearance.””

My mother began crying.

“Marcus, don't listen to it.””

I turned toward her.

“Why?””

She shook her head.

“Because I made that recording.””

I stared.

“What did you say?””

She covered her face.

“I wasn't the victim that night.””

I felt the room go silent.

My mother slowly lowered her hands.

“I was the one who pulled the trigger.””

I stared at her.

“Who did you shoot?””

She looked directly at me.

“Your biological father.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

She nodded.

“He came back to take you. Thomas tried to stop him. I was afraid he would hurt you.””

My voice cracked.

“Did you kill him?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“I thought I had.””

I looked down at the memory card.

Then at the photograph of Daniel.

Then at the video of the man who had just threatened my daughter.

If my mother had shot him decades ago, who had been calling me?

And why had he returned now?

Before I could speak, Detective Harris's radio crackled.

“Unit seven to command. We have a development at the Cole residence.””

The detective lifted his radio.

“Go ahead.””

“We've secured Richard Hale.””

I exhaled.

Finally.

Then the officer continued.

“But there's another problem.””

“What problem?””

“We found two men in the basement.””

The detective frowned.

“Two?””

“Yes, sir.””

A pause.

Then the officer said:

“One is Thomas Cole.””

“And the other?””

The response came through clearly.

“It's Daniel Reed.””

I stared at the phone.

“That can't be right.””

The detective looked at me.

“Why?””

I pointed toward the photograph on the table.

“Because Daniel Reed is standing in this hospital room.””

Everyone turned.

The man who had entered with my mother was gone.

His chair was empty.

And on the pillow beside Elena's bed lay a small handwritten note.

*Your real father is still waiting for you.*

I looked at my mother.

She was shaking.

Then my phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID displayed a name I hadn't seen in years.

*DAD.*

I answered.

A man's voice whispered:

“Marcus, don't trust the woman who raised you.””

I turned toward my mother.

May you like

And the caller continued:

“She's the reason your real father was buried alive.””
