Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Steel Door

“Marcus?””

Elena's whisper pulled me away from the ladder.

I turned toward the steel door.

“I'm here, sweetheart.””

A small sound came from inside.

Then she said something that made my chest tighten.

“Is Ava with you?””

I swallowed.

“She is upstairs. She's safe.””

“Did she see Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“Oh, God…”

I pressed my forehead against the cold metal.

“Elena, tell me what happened. Please.””

For several seconds, there was nothing but the sound of water dripping somewhere inside the passage.

Then Elena began speaking.

“Fourteen months ago, I didn't disappear because of the accident.””

My hands tightened into fists.

“What accident?””

“The boat. Marcus, someone tampered with the engine.””

I closed my eyes.

The detective had told me the boat probably suffered mechanical failure. The weather had been rough, and Elena had supposedly gone overboard before help arrived.

“Who?””

“I don't know everything. I only know Vanessa was there.””

My stomach twisted.

“Vanessa?””

“She came to the marina that afternoon. She told me you had asked her to bring some documents.””

I stared at the steel door.

“What documents?””

“The documents for your company. The ones you signed when we bought the house.””

I remembered them.

A stack of papers had been placed on my desk six months before Elena disappeared. Vanessa had worked as an executive assistant at one of our investment firms at the time.

She had brought the documents to me.

I had signed them without reading every page because I trusted the people handling our legal affairs.

“Why would she need those?””

Elena's voice weakened.

“Because she was already stealing from you.””

I stepped backward.

“What?””

“She wasn't just interested in your money, Marcus. She had been working with someone inside your company. They transferred money through shell accounts. Millions.””

My mind raced.

Our financial director, Richard Hale, had resigned three months after Elena disappeared. He had blamed personal reasons and moved to another state.

I had barely questioned it.

“Who was helping her?””

Elena hesitated.

“Richard.””

I felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath me.

Richard had been my father's closest friend. He had attended my wedding. He had held Ava when she was born.

He had stood beside me at Elena's memorial service.

“Are you sure?””

“I saw the transfers. I found the records in Richard's office. I told him I was going to expose everything.””

“And then?””

“Then Vanessa invited me to meet her at the marina.””

My throat tightened.

“She said you wanted to surprise me. She said she had something important to discuss.””

Elena took a shaky breath.

“I should have known something was wrong when Richard was waiting beside the boat.””

I gripped the door.

“What happened?””

“They told me you were in trouble. They said there had been an emergency at the company. I got on the boat because I thought I could help.””

Her voice broke.

“Vanessa pushed me.””

I couldn't breathe.

“She pushed you into the water?””

“No. Richard hit me first. I remember falling.

When I woke up, I was in a room. My hands were tied.””

I closed my eyes.

For fourteen months, I had imagined my wife struggling against the waves, calling my name as the ocean pulled her away.

All that time, she had been somewhere close enough for me to hear her.

“Where have they kept you?””

“Here.””

“In the house?””

“Yes.””

I stared at the ceiling.

My mansion had been renovated eight years earlier. The swimming pool was added during the renovation, and I remembered the construction company installing a complicated drainage system.

But I had never known there was a hidden room underneath it.

“How long have you been here?””

“Since the accident.””

Fourteen months.

Fourteen months in a dark room.

Fourteen months while I mourned her.

Fourteen months while Vanessa slept in our bedroom.

My hands began shaking.

“I'm going to get you out.””

“Marcus, there's something else.””

“What?””

“She knows about Ava.””

I went still.

“What do you mean?””

“She asked me questions about the life insurance. About the trust. About what would happen if something happened to you.””

A cold wave moved through my body.

“What did you tell her?””

“Nothing.””

“Did she hurt you?””

Elena didn't answer immediately.

That silence was worse than anything she could have said.

“Marcus, please. You have to protect our daughter.””

“I will.””

“Don't trust the people around you. Not even the security guards.””

I thought of Daniel.

He had worked for me for seven years. He had protected my family through two attempted burglaries and a kidnapping threat against one of our business partners.

I trusted him.

But Vanessa had just been standing upstairs with someone who knew exactly how to close the hatch.

“How did you survive?”” I asked.

Elena's breathing became uneven.

“There was a ventilation pipe. Someone brought food sometimes. At first, I thought it was Richard. Then I realized he wasn't coming anymore.””

“Who brought it?””

“I never saw his face.””

“Why didn't you escape?””

“I tried. Twice.””

Her voice became quieter.

“The first time, they caught me. The second time, they told me they would take Ava.””

I slammed my fist against the door.

“They threatened our daughter?””

“Yes.””

I stepped back, fighting the urge to tear the entire door from its hinges.

Then I noticed something beside the handle.

A small electronic panel.

It had a red indicator light and a keypad.

I crouched down.

There were scratches around the numbers.

Someone had tried to enter a code repeatedly.

“Marcus,” Elena whispered.

“What?””

“Look underneath the door.””

I lowered the flashlight.

A folded piece of paper was wedged between the metal frame and the floor.

I pulled it out.

The paper was damp and yellowed at the edges.

There were four numbers written on it.

0814.

Our wedding anniversary.

I stared at it.

“Is this the code?””

“I don't know. I found it behind the mattress.””

I entered the numbers.

Nothing happened.

I tried again.

A low electronic beep sounded.

Then the red light turned green.

The lock clicked.

I grabbed the handle.

The steel door opened three inches before stopping against a heavy chain attached to the inside.

“Elena!””

A pale hand appeared through the opening.

I grabbed it.

Her fingers were frighteningly thin.

I could feel every bone.

“Baby…”

I dropped to my knees.

Her face appeared in the narrow gap.

For a moment, I couldn't recognize her.

Her blonde hair had turned dull and uneven. Her cheeks were sunken. A deep scar ran along her left temple.

But her eyes.

Those beautiful green eyes.

I knew them.

I had loved those eyes since the day we met.

“Elena…”

She began crying.

I pressed my face against the opening.

“I'm here. I'm here.””

She reached through the gap and touched my cheek.

“You came back.””

I kissed her fingers.

“I never stopped looking.””

Then she suddenly pulled away.

“Marcus, listen.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“Don't tell Ava everything yet.””

“Why?””

Elena glanced toward the darkness behind her.

“Because Vanessa didn't just threaten me with Ava.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else?””

“She told me Ava had already been helping her.””

I stared at my wife.

“That makes no sense.””

“I know what I heard.””

“Elena, Ava is six years old.””

“I know.””

She gripped my wrist.

“Vanessa told me that our daughter had been giving her information about the hidden room.””

I shook my head.

“No. Ava found you. She brought me here.””

“Marcus, I believe Ava wants to save me. But there's something Vanessa showed me.””

“What?””

Elena opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, a loud metallic bang echoed through the passage.

Then another.

Someone was climbing down the ladder.

I switched off the flashlight.

A man's voice came from above.

“Mr. Cole?””

I recognized it.

Daniel.

“Sir, are you down there?””

I moved toward the ladder.

“Daniel! Get me out of here!””

He stopped.

Then I heard him say something into a radio.

“She's still alive.””

A pause.

Then he added:

“Both of them.””

I froze.

Both of them?

A second later, Daniel's voice changed.

“Mr. Cole, I'm sorry.””

The flashlight beam suddenly appeared at the top of the stairs.

And behind it stood Vanessa.

Holding Ava's favorite pink teddy bear.
