Chapter 8: The Truth Emma Couldn't Tell Me

The next morning, Detective Shaw drove me to a private interview room at the police station.

Emma had requested a place where she could leave quickly if she felt unsafe. She had also asked that no one tell Vanessa where the meeting was taking place.

I agreed to every condition.

When I entered the room, I saw her sitting beside the window.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

She looked older.

Of course she did.

Six years had passed. Her dark hair was shorter, threaded with gray near her temples. There was a pale scar along her jaw and a stiffness in the way she held her left arm.

But her eyes were the same.

I recognized them immediately.

“Emma?””

She stood.

Her lips trembled.

“Daniel.””

I crossed the room, then stopped a few feet away.

I didn't know whether I should hug her.

I didn't know whether she wanted me near her.

I didn't even know whether I deserved to touch her.

She answered by stepping forward and wrapping her arms around me.

I held her carefully.

She felt real.

Warm.

Alive.

And when she began to cry against my shoulder, six years of grief collapsed into a single unbearable moment.

“I thought you were dead,” I whispered.

“I know.””

“We buried you.””

“No,” she said quietly.

“You buried an empty coffin.””

I pulled back.

“What?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“There was never a body. Vanessa told everyone the remains had been too badly damaged to identify. She said the authorities had confirmed it was me.””

My stomach turned.

“Why didn't anyone question that?””

“Because Andrew Harris arranged the paperwork. Because Vanessa knew exactly what to say. And because you were barely functioning after that night.””

“I don't remember.””

“I know.””

I sat down heavily.

Emma took the chair opposite me.

For several seconds, she looked at her hands.

Then she said, “Do you remember when I came to your house three days before I disappeared?””

“Some of it.””

“I told you I had proof that Andrew was abusing his position at the hospital.””

I nodded.

“You said you'd help me.””

“I did?””

“Yes. You promised you'd meet me after work and take me to the police.””

I stared at her.

“I don't remember that.””

“You never came.””

The words landed between us.

“Why?””

“Vanessa told you I'd changed my mind. She said I was having another episode and that you should leave me alone.””

I closed my eyes.

I remembered a text message from Vanessa telling me Emma was upset and needed space. I'd been exhausted after a twelve-hour shift at a construction site and had accepted the explanation without question.

“I believed her.””

“Yes.””

Emma's voice wasn't angry.

That somehow made it worse.

“I was so busy trying to keep my own life from falling apart that I didn't notice yours was in danger.””

She nodded.

“That's what Vanessa counted on.””

I opened my eyes.

“What happened at the hospital?””

Emma drew a slow breath.

“Andrew Harris was a senior physician with a lot of influence. He had spent years manipulating patients, altering records, and using his position to keep people quiet. I found discrepancies in several files. At first, I thought they were administrative mistakes.””

“What did you discover?””

“That he was documenting procedures that never happened. He was also accessing patient records without authorization. When I raised concerns, he told me to stop looking.””

“And you didn't.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I should have known he wouldn't let it go.””

“What happened next?””

“He began telling people I was unstable. He made complaints about my work. He even contacted Vanessa and told her I was becoming obsessed with him.””

I frowned.

“Why would Vanessa believe him?””

“Because he had been helping her.””

My heart skipped.

“With what?””

Emma hesitated.

Then she said, “Vanessa had been falsifying medication records.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“She was taking prescription medication from the hospital and altering the inventory to hide the shortages. Andrew helped her cover it up.””

“Why?””

“Because he controlled the records, and she owed him.””

I felt sick.

“Was she addicted?””

“I don't know. I know she was afraid of him. I also know she did things to keep him from exposing her.””

“Like what?””

“Like helping him discredit me.””

Emma leaned forward.

“I tried to tell Vanessa that Andrew would eventually turn on her. I told her I had enough evidence to expose them both.””

“What did she say?””

“She told me I was destroying the family.””

I thought of the bruises on Lily's ribs.

The fear in her eyes.

The way she'd asked me whether I was angry with her for telling the truth.

“Why did Vanessa hurt Lily?””

Emma's face crumpled.

“Because Lily saw something.””

“What?””

Emma closed her eyes.

“The night I disappeared, Lily was in the kitchen. She was two years old, but she was awake. She saw Andrew hit me.””

I felt my hands curl into fists.

“And I was there?””

“Yes.””

“What did I do?””

Emma looked at me for a long time.

“You tried to stop him.””

I stared at her.

“But Lily said she saw me holding a knife.””

Emma nodded slowly.

“You picked it up after the glass broke. You were trying to keep Andrew away from me. He struck you from behind, and you fell.

When you got back up, you were confused. You kept asking what had happened.””

I could barely breathe.

“Did I stab him?””

“No.””

“Did I hurt anyone?””

“You tried to protect me.””

“Then why did Vanessa say I did something to you?””

“Because she needed you to doubt yourself.””

Emma's eyes filled.

“She told you that you'd attacked me. She told Michael that you'd lost control. She told Andrew that you'd become dangerous. Then she used your confusion to convince you that staying quiet was the only way to protect Lily.””

I shook my head.

“How could I forget something like that?””

“Andrew gave you something.””

“What?””

“A sedative. He said you were having a panic attack and needed to calm down. I don't know exactly what he gave you, but you were barely conscious afterward.””

My stomach twisted.

“And then?””

“Vanessa and Michael moved me to a car. Andrew arranged for me to be taken to a private facility under another name.””

“Why didn't you come back?””

Emma stared at the window.

“Because when I woke up, Andrew told me you were dead.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He said you'd died from complications after the sedative. He showed me a photograph of a man in a hospital bed and told me it was you.””

I felt cold all over.

“It wasn't me.””

“I know that now.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I tried to contact Vanessa. She told me Lily was safe and that the police believed I had died. She said if I returned, Andrew would make sure Lily disappeared too.””

“So you stayed away?””

“For a while, I believed her. Then I found out she was lying about Lily being safe.””

I thought of the bruises.

The recording.

The hidden compartment.

“How did you find out?””

“An old colleague contacted me. She told me Vanessa had been asking questions about the investigation and trying to locate the evidence I'd hidden.””

“Why didn't you come straight to us?””

“Because I didn't know who I could trust. I had no idea whether you were involved. I didn't know if Michael had helped them deliberately. And I knew Andrew had people who could access records, phones, and addresses.””

She reached into her bag and took out a small envelope.

“I kept copies of everything I found. Medical records. Emails.

Financial transfers. Photographs.””

She placed it on the table.

“Enough to prove what Andrew was doing, and enough to show that Vanessa helped him.””

I stared at the envelope.

“Why now?””

“Because I learned Lily was being hurt.””

Her voice broke.

“I couldn't stay away anymore.””

For a long moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I asked the question that had haunted me since the basement was opened.

“Why did you leave that recorder inside Mr. Buttons?””

Emma's expression changed.

“Because I knew Vanessa would try to make Lily forget.””

“Forget what?””

“The truth about that night.””

I leaned forward.

“Emma, I need to know exactly what happened to Lily.””

She looked at me.

“Vanessa wasn't only afraid that Lily remembered Andrew attacking me. She was afraid Lily remembered what happened afterward.””

“What happened afterward?””

Emma reached across the table and took my hand.

“Daniel, when I was being carried out of the house, I was still conscious. I heard Vanessa telling Andrew that Lily had seen everything.””

I felt my pulse hammer.

“What did he say?””

“He told her the child would forget.””

“And Vanessa?””

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

“She said, 'Then we'll make sure she does.''”

I pulled my hand away.

For the first time, I understood why the bruises might not have been random acts of anger.

Vanessa had been trying to control what Lily remembered.

But the thought led to another question.

“What happened to the knife?””

Emma stared at me.

Then she reached into the envelope and removed a photograph.

It showed the kitchen from six years earlier.

A chair lay overturned.

Glass covered the floor.

And beneath the kitchen table was a small silver knife with a dark stain along the blade.

I looked closer.

The knife had belonged to my mother.

I had kept it in a wooden block beside the stove.

Emma pointed to the corner of the photograph.

“Look at the reflection in the window.””

I leaned closer.

A figure stood behind the camera.

A man wearing a hospital identification badge.

Andrew Harris.

But he wasn't looking at Emma.

He was looking directly at me.

Emma whispered, “He took that photograph before he attacked you.””

I stared at the image.

Then I noticed something else.

On the refrigerator, held beneath a magnet, was a sheet of paper.

A drawing made by a toddler.

Three stick figures stood beneath a yellow sun.

One was labeled Daddy.

One was labeled Auntie.

The third had been scribbled over until the paper had nearly torn.

Emma touched the photograph.

“Lily drew that the week before I disappeared. Vanessa told her to erase the third figure.””

“Who was it?””

Emma looked at me.

“Andrew.””

My stomach tightened.

“He was already coming to our house?””

“Yes.””

“How often?””

“More often than you knew.””

I sat back, struggling to process it.

Andrew Harris hadn't been a distant physician who appeared only at the hospital.

He had been inside our home.

Near my daughter.

Near my wife.

And perhaps near me while I slept.

Emma took a shaky breath.

“There's something else. Something I haven't told the police yet.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She reached into her bag and removed a folded document.

It was a birth certificate.

The name at the top was familiar.

*Lily Carter.*

But the section marked Father contained a name that wasn't mine.

Andrew Harris.

I stared at the paper.

“No.””

Emma's eyes filled.

“Daniel, I don't know whether this document is genuine. It could be forged. But I found it among Andrew's files.””

I shook my head.

“Lily is my daughter.””

“I know how much you love her.””

“She is my daughter.””

Emma reached for my hand again.

“I believe you.””

I looked at the birth certificate.

For the first time since this nightmare began, I felt something worse than fear.

I felt uncertainty about the one thing I had never questioned.

And then my phone rang.

Detective Shaw.

Her voice was urgent.

“Daniel, you need to get to the station immediately. We've just received the results of a preliminary document examination.””

“What results?””

“The birth certificate you mentioned appears to be part of a larger file. And we have reason to believe someone has been falsifying records connected to your daughter since she was born.””

I stared at Emma.

She had gone completely still.

Detective Shaw continued.

“There's another problem. Dr. Harris has left his residence, and we can't locate him.””

I stood.

“Why is that a problem?””

“Because the hospital has just reported that a patient record connected to Lily was accessed remotely less than ten minutes ago.””

My blood ran cold.

“What record?””

Detective Shaw hesitated.

“Her original birth record.””

May you like

Then she said the words that made me realize this wasn't only about what had happened six years ago.

“Someone is trying to change who your daughter legally belongs to.””
