Chapter 5: The Door She Feared

Jordan stood behind the apartment door, his hand inches away from the lock.

His father’s fingers tightened around his wrist.

“Don’t.””

The word was barely a whisper.

Jordan looked back.

David’s face was pale.

Not angry.

Not afraid of Eleanor Dalton.

Afraid of what she might say.

Outside, the hallway light flickered.

Then Ms. Dalton spoke again.

“Jordan, I know your father is there.””

David closed his eyes.

Jordan felt something shift inside him.

For months, Ms. Dalton had controlled every room she entered.

The classroom.

The meetings.

The conversations.

She had always been the person with the answers.

But now she was standing outside their apartment door at night.

Waiting.

Needing something.

Jordan slowly unlocked the door.

“Jordan!””

His father’s voice stopped him for half a second.

Then he opened it.

Ms. Dalton stood in the hallway.

She looked different.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Her perfectly arranged hair was messy. Her expensive coat was wrinkled. Her eyes looked exhausted.

But Jordan remembered the ruler.

He remembered the red light.

He remembered the fear on Sofia’s face.

“What do you want?”” Jordan asked.

Ms. Dalton looked past him.

At David.

“I need to speak with you.””

David laughed bitterly.

“You have some nerve coming here.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Ms. Dalton lowered her eyes.

For the first time, Jordan saw something he had never seen before.

Regret.

“I made mistakes.””

David’s expression hardened.

“Mistakes are forgetting an appointment. Forgetting a birthday. You don’t accidentally ruin someone’s life.””

Ms. Dalton swallowed.

“I know.””

Jordan looked between them.

“What happened?””

Neither adult answered.

That silence told him more than words.

Ms. Dalton stepped closer.

“I did not deny your father’s claim because I thought he was lying.””

Jordan froze.

“Then why?””

She looked at David.

“Because I was told to.””

The hallway became quiet.

David’s face changed.

“By who?””

Ms. Dalton hesitated.

Then:

“By the person who owns the insurance company.””

Jordan frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Ms. Dalton looked at him.

“It means your father’s accident was covered.””

David stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You said the investigation found no responsibility.””

“I lied.””

The confession landed harder than any accusation.

Jordan stepped back.

“You lied?””

Ms. Dalton nodded.

“I changed the report.””

David gripped his wheelchair.

“Why?””

“Because I was threatened.””

Jordan stared.

“You expect us to believe that?””

“No.””

The answer surprised him.

Ms. Dalton looked down.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.””

A car passed outside, throwing light across the hallway.

She continued.

“I thought if I did what they wanted, I would be protected.””

David’s voice was cold.

“And were you?””

She gave a small, broken laugh.

“No.””

Jordan felt anger rise.

“So you destroyed my family because you were scared?””

Ms. Dalton looked at him.

“Yes.””

The honesty made it worse.

“You watched us struggle.””

“Yes.””

“You saw my dad lose everything.””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing.””

Her eyes filled.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

“I did something worse.””

Nobody spoke.

Then David asked:

“What changed?””

Ms. Dalton looked toward the apartment.

“The day you unplugged that camera.””

Jordan frowned.

“What?””

“I realized I became the same kind of person I was afraid of.””

The statement sounded impossible coming from her.

But Jordan remembered something.

The camera.

The missing evidence.

The fear.

“Why come here now?””

Ms. Dalton reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Inside was a flash drive.

“I copied files.””

David stared.

“What files?””

“The original accident report.””

Jordan looked at the drive.

“And why should we trust you?””

“You shouldn’t.””

Ms. Dalton handed it to him.

“That’s why I brought proof.””

Before Jordan could respond, a car door slammed outside.

Ms. Dalton’s face changed instantly.

Fear returned.

Not guilt.

Real fear.

She looked toward the window.

“They found me.””

David frowned.

“Who?””

Ms. Dalton stepped backward.

“Jordan, listen to me carefully.””

The urgency in her voice changed everything.

“The person who ordered me to destroy your father’s claim knows I contacted you.””

Jordan tightened his grip on the flash drive.

“Who?””

Ms. Dalton opened her mouth.

Then the hallway lights went out.

A shadow moved outside the apartment.

And someone whispered:

“Eleanor.””

May you like

Ms. Dalton froze.

Because she knew that voice.
