Chapter 1: The Woman He Was Shielding

The sl@p echoed across the marble entrance of the Oakmont Luxury Hotel, and I nearly fell against the brass railing.
My cheek burned, my seven-month-pregnant stomach tightened, and the man who was supposed to protect me stepped between me and the woman who had just h*t me.
His name was Marcus, my husband, and the woman he was shielding was Vivian Cross — the woman I had only recently realized was far more than his "business consultant."
"You really should learn when to leave," Vivian said, adjusting her designer purse as if nothing had happened.
I looked at Marcus, waiting for him to tell her she had gone too far, waiting for him to ask whether I was hurt, waiting for even a small sign that the man I married was still somewhere inside him.
Instead, he glanced at his watch and told me to get an Uber and go home because I was making a scene.
A scene.
That was the word he chose while I stood there trying not to collapse.
I had not even come to the hotel expecting a fight.
Marcus had told me his mother wanted me at an important family trust meeting, and because I was carrying our first child, I believed him.
For weeks, he had been distant, distracted, and constantly checking his phone, but whenever I asked what was wrong, he told me he was under pressure at work.
I believed him because I had spent years believing him.
I had believed him through the difficult months when his business was struggling.
I had believed him through the fertility treatments, the appointments, the disappointments, and the nights when we both wondered whether we would ever become parents.
When we finally heard our baby's heartbeat, Marcus had held my hand and wept.
Now he was standing beside another woman.
And he wasn't even ashamed.
Vivian leaned toward me with a smile that made my stomach turn.
She told me Marcus had brought her to the hotel because he was finished hiding her, and that I was now the embarrassing secret.
Then she said something that made the color drain from my face: Marcus wanted his mother to meet the woman he planned to marry.
I looked at my husband.
"Is that true?"
He didn't answer immediately.
That silence told me more than any confession could have.
Then he finally said he wanted a divorce.
I remember staring at him and wondering how three years of marriage could disappear in a single sentence.
I remembered our wedding, his promises, the way he used to kiss my stomach every night, and the way he once whispered that our baby was the greatest thing that had ever happened to him.
Now he was telling me to leave.
But there was something Marcus didn't know.
He had told me his mother, Eleanor Hale, wanted me at that hotel.
And Eleanor was arriving any second.
A black Lincoln Town Car rolled into the VIP loading zone, its engine deep enough to silence the whispers around us.
Marcus straightened his expensive tie, smoothed his jacket, and immediately looked more composed, as if the arrival of his mother would finally put everything under his control.
Then the rear door opened.
Eleanor Hale stepped onto the curb carrying a thick leather folder.
She didn't look at Marcus.
She didn't look at Vivian.
Her eyes went straight to my red cheek, then to my shaking hands, then to the child inside me.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she walked past her son and stopped in front of me.
"Who did this?"
And for the first time that afternoon, Marcus looked afraid.
