Chapter 7: The Man I Thought I Knew

I stared at Marcus.

He stared back.

Neither of us moved.

The phone was still pressed against my ear.

Rachel’s words echoed.

Your husband signed them.

I wanted to reject it.

I wanted to scream that it was impossible.

But the paper existed.

The signature existed.

And now Rachel had proof.

“Claire?”” Rachel asked.

I couldn’t answer.

Marcus stood slowly.

“What did she say?””

I ended the call.

Then I showed him the screen.

His face changed.

Not anger.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“I need to explain.””

My heart sank.

Those words.

Those four words.

They were the words people said when the truth was already too painful.

“Explain what?””

Marcus looked away.

“I need you to understand something.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I don’t want a speech.””

“Claire—”

“Did you sign it?””

He was silent.

That silence destroyed me.

“Did you?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The room went quiet.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Listen.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You signed papers giving away our son?””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it?””

He took a breath.

“I thought it was temporary.””

I laughed.

A broken, painful laugh.

“Temporary?””

He stepped closer.

“Your mother convinced me something was wrong.””

“What?””

“She told me Elijah was struggling.””

I stared at him.

“She told me you weren’t coping.””

“That’s ridiculous.””

“I know now.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You believed her?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“I was desperate.””

He sat down.

“After Elijah disappeared, I couldn’t think. I couldn’t sleep. I thought I had failed him.””

I remembered those years.

Marcus becoming quieter.

Working longer hours.

Avoiding conversations about Elijah.

I thought he was grieving.

But maybe there was more.

“Your mother told me she had found someone who could help.””

“Help?””

“She said Elijah needed a stable environment.””

My hands shook.

“You agreed.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

“I signed something.””

“What something?””

“A temporary guardianship.””

I stared at him.

“And you never told me?””

“She told me it was only paperwork.””

“Paperwork?””

I raised my voice.

“You gave my mother control over our son.””

“I never gave her permission to keep him.””

“Then why did she?””

Marcus had no answer.

Because he didn’t know.

Because none of us knew.

My phone buzzed again.

Rachel.

This time, she sent a file.

A scanned document.

I opened it.

The first page was the guardianship agreement.

The second page was something else.

A letter from my mother.

My blood ran cold.

Marcus read over my shoulder.

The letter said:

“Marcus agreed that Claire is too emotionally unstable to make decisions regarding Elijah.””

I looked at him.

“Did you say that?””

“No.””

“Did you ever say I was unstable?””

“No.””

Marcus looked horrified.

“She twisted everything.””

I scrolled further.

The letter continued:

“He understands that Elijah cannot return until Claire accepts reality.””

Reality.

That word.

The same word my mother used when she told me I was imagining the photograph.

She had built an entire world where my grief was madness.

Then the final page loaded.

A signature.

A witness signature.

I stared.

Because I knew that name.

A lawyer.

A family friend.

Someone who attended my wedding.

Someone who had known my mother for years.

Someone who had helped her.

Rachel called again.

I answered.

“Who witnessed this?””

Her voice was quiet.

“Your mother’s attorney.””

“Where is he?””

“He died last year.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Everyone who knew the truth was disappearing.

Then Rachel said:

“There’s more.””

“What?””

“I found Elijah.””

Everything stopped.

Marcus grabbed the phone.

“Where?””

Rachel hesitated.

“He came back.””

My heart raced.

“What do you mean?””

“He’s here.””

My hands started shaking.

“Where?””

Rachel whispered:

“He’s outside my house.””

A thousand emotions crashed through me.

Fear.

Hope.

Pain.

Love.

After seven years…

My son was close enough to touch.

Then Rachel said something that shattered me.

“But Claire…”

May you like

“What?””

“He doesn’t want to see you.””
