Chapter 7: The Person Who Tried To Warn Me
The signature belonged to my attorney.
But beneath it was another name.
A name that made my hands go numb.
Emily.
My sister.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Michael took the paper from me.
His eyes scanned the page.
Then widened.
“Aunt Emily?””
I couldn’t understand.
“No.””
I turned toward the living room.
Emily had been sitting quietly on the couch.
She looked away.
And that was when I knew.
She had known.
“Emily.””
Her face crumbled.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“How long?””
She covered her mouth.
“Since the divorce.””
The room became painfully quiet.
Michael looked between us.
“You knew?””
Emily stood.
“I tried to tell her.””
I stared.
“When?””
“The night you signed.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Then why didn’t you?””
Emily started crying.
“Because David called me before you did.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He said if I interfered, he would make things worse.””
“For who?””
“For you.””
She wiped her tears.
“He told me he would fight for full custody.””
Michael stepped back.
“You were scared.””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
The betrayal hurt differently.
Because unlike David and Chloe, Emily loved me.
She was supposed to protect me.
“I thought I could fix it later,” she whispered.
“But later never came.””
No one spoke.
Because that was the truth.
Later was the lie people told when they were afraid.
Emily looked at Michael.
“I’m sorry.””
He shook his head.
“Everyone was sorry after.””
The words cut deeper than anger.
Because he was right.
Everyone apologized after the damage was done.
Nobody protected us before.
David sat down.
His voice was quiet.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at him.
“What now?””
He looked at Michael.
“The reason Chloe wanted custody control wasn’t just because she wanted you away.””
Michael frowned.
“Then why?””
David hesitated.
“Because she wanted to replace you.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
David swallowed.
“She wanted Michael to see her as his mother.””
The room felt colder.
“She used to say you were temporary.””
I stared.
“Temporary?””
David nodded.
“She said eventually he would forget.””
Michael laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“She actually believed that?””
David looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
I thought about every birthday I missed.
Every holiday Michael spent away.
Every time he seemed distant.
Every time I wondered if my son was growing away from me.
And all along…
Someone had been trying to erase me.
Michael walked toward the window.
For a long time, he said nothing.
Then:
“I remember.””
We all looked at him.
He turned slowly.
“I remember being ten.””
His voice shook.
“Mom called on my birthday.””
My heart broke.
“I remember.””
He looked at David.
“Chloe took the phone.””
David closed his eyes.
“She told me Mom forgot.””
I covered my mouth.
“I never forgot.””
“I know.””
Michael wiped his face.
“I know now.””
Then he looked at me.
“I spent years thinking you chose not to be there.””
I walked toward him.
“You were never something I chose away.””
He hugged me.
And this time, I held on.
Because I understood something.
We had both spent years mourning a relationship that was never actually gone.
It had been stolen.
The next morning, I met with my old attorney.
Her name was Rachel Miller.
When she saw the original documents, she immediately became serious.
“Sarah,” she said.
“This changes everything.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
She tapped the papers.
“The agreement you signed was altered.””
My stomach dropped.
“Can you prove it?””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
She opened a file cabinet.
“Because I kept the original draft.””
I stared.
“Why?””
She looked at me sadly.
“Because I knew something was wrong.””
She pulled out a folder.
Inside was a letter.
One I had never seen.
Written fifteen years earlier.
The first line made my blood freeze.
Sarah, if you are reading this, it means David failed to stop what Chloe did.
I looked at Rachel.
“Who wrote this?””
She hesitated.
Then answered:
“The person who witnessed Chloe changing the agreement.””
“Who?””
Rachel pushed the letter toward me.
May you like
And I saw the name.
Linda Parker.
