Chapter 8: The Door That Never Opened
I stared at Mark.
“What does that mean?””
He looked exhausted.
“After I left, Vanessa changed everything.””
“Changed what?””
“My relationship with you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You did that yourself.””
“I know.””
He nodded.
“But she helped.””
The anger returned.
Not the old anger.
A sharper one.
The anger of finally seeing clearly.
“What did she do?””
Mark hesitated.
Then he reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an envelope.
“I kept this for years.””
I didn’t take it.
“What is it?””
“Something Vanessa wrote.””
Ethan looked confused.
“Why do you have it?””
“Because I found it after I realized what she was doing.””
My fingers moved toward the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was Vanessa’s.
I read.
*Mark, you need to stop feeling guilty. Emily will move on eventually. She always survives. That’s what makes her dangerous.*
I stopped.
The next line made my chest tighten.
*The important thing is making sure Ethan sees you as the parent who chose him.*
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Mark looked ashamed.
“She was manipulating everything.””
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
He took a breath.
“She told Ethan I left because you were too focused on work.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She told him you were always tired. That you cared more about responsibilities than family.””
My hands shook.
All those years.
My son thought I wasn’t enough?
“I never said that,” Mark whispered.
“But you let her.””
He looked away.
“Yes.””
That single word carried everything.
Ethan stood.
“Dad.””
Mark looked up.
“I need to ask you something.””
“What?””
“Did you ever defend Mom?””
Mark couldn’t answer.
And that was his answer.
Ethan nodded slowly.
“Okay.””
He walked toward the window.
“I think that’s what hurts most.””
Mark’s voice broke.
“Ethan—”
“No.””
My son turned around.
“I can understand leaving.””
Mark looked surprised.
“I can understand falling out of love.””
His eyes filled.
“But I can’t understand watching someone hurt the person who raised me and doing nothing.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“Who is it?””
He put it on speaker.
A woman’s voice answered.
“Ethan?””
“Yes?””
“This is Claire.””
Vanessa’s sister.
“I’m sorry to contact you like this.””
Ethan looked at Mark.
“Why are you calling?””
There was a long pause.
Then Claire said:
“Because you deserve to know what happened the night your father left.””
My heart stopped.
Mark closed his eyes.
“No.””
Claire continued.
“Your father didn’t walk away that night because he wanted a new life.””
Mark stood.
“Claire, don’t.””
Ethan looked shocked.
“Don’t what?””
The voice on the phone became quieter.
“Because he was going to come back.””
The room froze.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“What?””
Claire continued.
“Your father regretted leaving almost immediately.””
Mark looked away.
I stared at him.
“Is this true?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Ethan’s voice was shaking.
“You were going to come back?””
Mark whispered:
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
Nobody moved.
Then Claire answered for him.
“Because Vanessa found out.””
I gripped the phone.
“What did she do?””
Claire was silent.
Then:
“She threatened him.””
Mark closed his eyes.
“She said if he went back, she would reveal something.””
Ethan looked at his father.
“Reveal what?””
Mark looked at me.
And I knew.
Whatever came next was the final piece.
The truth that had been hidden for eighteen years.
“I made a mistake before I left,” Mark whispered.
My heart sank.
“What mistake?””
He swallowed.
“The night before I left…”
He looked at Ethan.
“I signed something.””
“What?””
“A document.””
My voice was barely there.
“What document?””
Mark’s eyes filled with regret.
“A custody agreement.””
The room went silent.
Ethan frowned.
“Custody?””
Mark nodded.
“Vanessa convinced me that if I left, she could help me get equal custody.””
I stared at him.
“And?””
He looked at me.
“She lied.””
My chest tightened.
“What did you sign?””
Mark whispered:
“Full custody.””
The words hit like a storm.
For eighteen years, I believed Mark chose to leave.
But now I was learning something worse.
Someone had tried to take my son from me.
May you like
And the person who almost allowed it…
Was the man I trusted most.
