Chapter 6: The Woman Who Wanted My Life

I couldn’t sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Vanessa sitting in my chair.

Smiling.

Confident.

Like she had already won.

For eighteen years, I thought she wanted Mark.

I thought she wanted the life we had.

But now I wondered if Mark was only part of it.

Maybe I was the real target.

At 2:14 a.m., my phone lit up.

A message from Ethan.

*Mom, I found something else.*

I sat up immediately.

*What?*

The reply came seconds later.

*A video.*

My heart raced.

*From where?*

*Dad’s old phone backup.*

I called him.

He answered on the first ring.

“Mom?””

“What did you find?””

There was silence.

Then:

“I found a recording.””

My stomach tightened.

“Ethan…”

“I know.””

His voice sounded shaken.

“I almost didn’t listen.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

I waited.

“What was on it?””

A long pause.

Then he said:

“It was Vanessa talking.””

I felt cold.

“About what?””

Ethan breathed in.

“About you.””

I drove to his apartment immediately.

He was sitting on the couch, staring at his laptop.

The screen was frozen on a video file.

“Play it,” I whispered.

Ethan looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

No.

I wasn’t sure.

But after eighteen years of confusion, I needed the truth.

“Play it.””

The video began.

It was taken inside a restaurant.

The quality was poor.

But the voices were clear.

Mark was there.

Vanessa was there.

And then I heard my own name.

“Emily doesn’t know.””

Vanessa’s voice.

My entire body went still.

Mark sounded nervous.

“Stop talking like that.””

“Why?””

“Because this isn’t a game.””

Vanessa laughed.

“It is exactly a game.””

My fingers gripped the edge of the table.

Then she said the sentence that made Ethan pause the video.

“I told you I could replace her.””

Silence.

I looked at my son.

He looked devastated.

“Keep going,” I said.

He pressed play.

Vanessa continued.

“She thinks being a mother means showing up.””

Mark said something too quiet to hear.

Vanessa laughed again.

“But I know how this works. Kids choose the person who makes them feel special.””

My eyes burned.

She had never wanted to love Ethan.

She wanted to win him.

The video continued.

“I’ll get him to see me as the better choice.””

Mark’s voice became angry.

“Don’t involve Ethan.””

Vanessa replied:

“You already did when you left.””

The video stopped.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, Ethan whispered:

“She really said those things.””

I looked at my son.

“I’m sorry you had to hear that.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

He wiped his face.

“I’m sorry you had to live with it.””

That broke me.

Because for years, I protected Ethan from the truth.

But somehow, he had always been protecting me too.

The next morning, Vanessa called.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Emily.””

Her voice was different.

Less confident.

“I heard you found something.””

I said nothing.

She continued.

“I can explain.””

I laughed.

“Can you?””

“Yes.””

“Then explain why you wanted to replace me.””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then:

“You misunderstood.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“For eighteen years, I misunderstood everything.””

Vanessa sighed.

“You don’t understand what it was like.””

I almost laughed.

“What what was like?””

“Watching you.””

The answer surprised me.

“Watching me?””

“Yes.””

Her voice sharpened.

“You had everything.””

I frowned.

“I had everything?””

“You had Mark. You had Ethan. You had the family.””

I stared at the wall.

“And you wanted it.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

Then she continued.

“I thought if I could prove Ethan needed me, everything would fall into place.””

I closed my eyes.

“And did it?””

Silence.

“No.””

For the first time, she sounded small.

“I thought winning would feel better.””

I looked down.

“But it didn’t.””

After the call ended, Ethan looked at me.

“What are you going to do?””

I thought about it.

For years, I wanted revenge.

I wanted Mark and Vanessa to feel the pain I felt.

But now that the truth was out, something unexpected happened.

I didn’t want their lives.

I wanted mine back.

Then Ethan received another message.

He looked at it.

His face changed.

“What?””

He turned the phone toward me.

It was from his college.

A scholarship committee.

They wanted to recognize him for something he had done.

Something connected to his graduation speech.

But beneath that message was another one.

From an unknown number.

May you like

Only one sentence.

*Your father isn’t the only person who lied to you.*
