Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Curtain

I reacted before I thought.

I pushed the person away and pulled Ethan behind me.

“Don’t touch my son.””

The emergency lights flickered on.

A man stood in front of me.

Not Daniel.

Not Ryan.

Someone else.

Older.

Gray hair.

A scar running along his jaw.

And a look in his eyes that told me he had been waiting years for this moment.

Marcus’s security team immediately moved.

The man raised both hands.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Then who are you?””

The man looked at me.

“David knows.””

I stared.

“No.””

His expression didn’t change.

“You do.””

I searched my memory.

The voice.

The face.

The feeling.

And then it hit me.

The road.

The fire.

The night everything changed.

“You were there.””

The man nodded.

“Yes.””

Ryan looked confused.

“Who is he?””

The man ignored him.

“I’m the reason you survived.””

I felt anger rise.

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“No?””

“You’re the reason I left.””

Silence.

Because everyone heard the accusation.

The man looked down.

“I deserved that.””

Marcus stepped between us.

“You have five seconds to explain.””

The man looked at him.

“My name is Thomas Reed.””

Marcus froze.

That name meant something.

I could see it.

“Who is he?”” I asked.

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“He was my father’s attorney.””

Thomas nodded.

“Before your father died.””

The atmosphere changed.

Marcus’s father.

The company.

The hidden symbol.

Everything was connected.

“You knew about the invitation?”” Marcus asked.

Thomas looked at the card.

“Yes.””

“Did you send it?””

“No.””

“Then who did?””

Thomas looked at Ethan.

And I hated that.

Every time someone looked at my son like he was part of a puzzle, something inside me wanted to fight.

“Answer me.””

Thomas sighed.

“Seven years ago, after Ryan disappeared, someone started searching for David.””

I looked at Ryan.

“What?””

Ryan looked equally confused.

“I didn’t know.””

Thomas continued.

“They weren’t searching for you because of Ryan.””

“Then why?””

Thomas looked at Ethan.

“Because of him.””

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I stepped forward.

“You’re telling me someone has been watching my son?””

Thomas didn’t deny it.

That was worse.

“Why?””

“Because Ethan is the last piece.””

The words felt impossible.

A seven-year-old boy.

The last piece of what?

Marcus looked furious.

“Explain.””

Thomas took a breath.

“Your father left behind a private trust.””

Marcus frowned.

“I know about the trust.””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“You know about the money.””

Marcus went silent.

“There was another part.””

“What part?””

Thomas looked at me.

“A witness protection agreement.””

The words made no sense.

“What?””

Marcus looked at him.

“My father had a witness protection agreement?””

“Yes.””

“For who?””

Thomas looked at me.

And I already knew.

“No.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

The silence afterward felt unbearable.

Marcus looked at me.

“David…”

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

Thomas spoke carefully.

“Your father was involved in something dangerous.””

“Marcus’s father?””

“Yes.””

“Why would that involve me?””

“Because the night you saved Marcus wasn’t an accident.””

The world seemed to stop.

“What did you say?””

Thomas looked at Marcus.

“Your car crash was not a crash.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“What?””

“It was an attack.””

Nobody spoke.

I felt Ethan’s hand slip into mine.

“Dad?””

I looked down.

He was scared.

I hated this.

I hated that adults had dragged him into something he never asked for.

Marcus looked at Thomas.

“Who attacked me?””

Thomas shook his head.

“That’s the question we spent twelve years trying to answer.””

“And Ethan?””

Thomas looked at the invitation.

“The person who sent that invitation believes your son has the answer.””

I felt my anger replace my fear.

“My son doesn’t know anything.””

Thomas looked at Ethan.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

But then Ethan spoke.

Quietly.

“Dad…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“There was something.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

He looked embarrassed.

“I didn’t want to tell you.””

I crouched.

“Tell me.””

“When I touched the car…”

His voice shook.

“I remembered something.””

Everyone became still.

“What did you remember?””

Ethan looked toward the silver supercar.

“The man who gave me the toy.””

My blood turned cold.

“What toy?””

Ethan looked at me.

“When we visited Mom’s old house.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“That was seven years ago.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“You remember that?””

Ethan looked at him.

“You were there.””

Ryan covered his mouth.

Because he remembered too.

I stood.

“What toy?””

Ethan looked down.

“The little silver car.””

Thomas whispered:

“Where is it?””

Ethan looked confused.

“Why?””

“Where is it, Ethan?””

My son looked at me.

Then answered:

“I kept it.””

Nobody spoke.

“Where?””

Ethan pointed toward the parking lot.

“In my backpack.””

I grabbed the backpack from the ground.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside were normal seven-year-old things.

A notebook.

A snack.

A small water bottle.

And underneath everything…

A tiny silver toy car.

Marcus stared at it.

Thomas stepped closer.

Then stopped.

Because carved into the bottom of the toy was the same symbol.

The black circle.

The silver line.

Marcus whispered:

“That belonged to my father.””

Daniel, who had been silent until then, suddenly shouted:

“No.””

Everyone turned.

He looked terrified.

Not angry.

Terrified.

“Destroy it.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Daniel backed away.

“Destroy it now.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Why?””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“Because if that toy is real…”

He looked at Ethan.

“…then the person who sent us here already knows where the evidence is.””

A phone rang.

Not Daniel’s.

Not Marcus’s.

Mine.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A voice spoke.

A voice I had never heard before.

But the words made my blood run cold.

“David Carter.””

I said nothing.

The voice continued.

“You have my property.””

I looked at the toy car.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“The man who watched you save Marcus Vale.””

The call ended.

May you like

And in the distance, beyond the estate gates, a black vehicle slowly turned on its headlights.

Someone had arrived.
