Chapter 9: The Person Who Signed Away the Truth
The words followed me all night.
Someone else in your family.
Not Marissa.
Someone else.
I sat in the car outside the police station for twenty minutes before walking inside.
I wasn’t afraid of the truth anymore.
That was the strange part.
A few days earlier, truth was the thing I wanted most.
Now it felt like a door I kept opening only to find another nightmare behind it.
Officer Harris was waiting.
He looked tired.
“You came alone.””
I nodded.
“I needed a minute.””
He understood.
Nobody had to explain why.
He handed me a file.
“The medical records were altered six months ago.””
I opened it.
“Six months?””
“Yes.””
“That’s before the scholarship.””
“Yes.””
I looked through the pages.
Everything was there.
Appointments.
Evaluations.
Signatures.
Except one thing.
The signature wasn’t Marissa’s.
I looked up.
“Who signed this?””
Officer Harris hesitated.
Then:
“Kendra.””
I closed my eyes.
Not again.
Not another betrayal.
“Why?””
“That’s what we need to find out.””
I called Kendra immediately.
She answered after one ring.
“Dad?””
“Come to the station.””
Silence.
“Why?””
“Because we need to talk about the medical records.””
I heard her breathing change.
“Mom told you.””
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words hurt.
Because they meant she knew.
When Kendra arrived, she looked nothing like the confident girl who had stood by the pool.
She looked like a child.
A scared child.
She sat across from me.
“I didn’t know how far she would go.””
I stared at her.
“But you knew she was lying.””
“Yes.””
“About Zoria.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
But it was still an answer.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was scared.””
I said nothing.
“She told me if I didn’t help her, she would expose everything about my father.””
“Your father?””
Kendra nodded.
“She said she would make sure everyone knew he left because he didn’t want me.””
“And?””
Kendra wiped her face.
“I found out that was a lie.””
I closed my eyes.
Another lie.
Another person damaged by Marissa’s stories.
“She controlled you.””
Kendra nodded.
“But I still did it.””
That was the difference.
She wasn’t pretending.
She knew she was responsible.
“I thought if I helped her, she would finally love me.””
The sentence broke my heart.
Because suddenly I saw it.
All three daughters.
Emily.
Kendra.
Zoria.
Different lives.
Same wound.
All of them trying to earn something from the same person.
Love.
Approval.
A sign they mattered.
Kendra looked at me.
“I’m sorry, Dad.””
I wanted to say I forgave her.
But I couldn’t.
Not yet.
“I believe you’re sorry.””
She cried.
“But I need time.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
Officer Harris entered.
He placed another folder down.
“We found one more thing.””
I looked at him.
“What now?””
He opened the folder.
Inside was a letter.
Not from Marissa.
From Andrew.
I recognized the handwriting.
“What is this?””
“A confession.””
I read it.
The first line made my hands shake.
*I helped Marissa because I thought I was protecting her.*
I continued.
Andrew explained everything.
He knew Marissa before she met me.
He knew about Emily.
He knew about Noah.
He knew about the lies.
And still, he helped her.
Because he believed she deserved a second chance.
But then he wrote:
*I didn’t realize she would keep creating victims to protect the first lie.*
I turned the page.
The final paragraph stopped me.
*The reason Marissa targeted Zoria was not because Kendra failed. It was because Zoria discovered something.*
My heart started pounding.
I looked at Officer Harris.
“What did she discover?””
He didn’t answer.
I looked back at the letter.
The next sentence explained everything.
*Zoria found the original adoption records.*
I felt cold.
“What adoption records?””
Officer Harris looked at me.
“The records showing who Emily’s biological father really was.””
I stared.
“What?””
Before he could answer, my phone rang.
Zoria.
I answered immediately.
“Zoria?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Dad.””
“What happened?””
“I found something in Mom’s room.””
My grip tightened.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“A box.””
“What’s inside?””
I heard her crying.
“Pictures.””
“Of what?””
Another pause.
Then she whispered:
“Of Emily.””
I stood.
“Zoria, listen to me. Don’t touch anything.””
“It’s too late.””
“Why?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because there’s a picture of Mom holding Emily.””
My heart raced.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“I know.””
A pause.
“Because Dad…”
“What?””
“The picture was taken yesterday.””
I stopped breathing.
“Yesterday?””
“Yes.””
My mind couldn’t process it.
Emily had been here.
She had been with us.
So why would there be a picture of Marissa holding her yesterday?
Then Zoria said the words that changed everything.
“Mom wasn’t looking at Emily like she had just found her.””
May you like
A pause.
“She was looking at her like she had known where she was all along.””
