Chapter 5: The Secret Eleanor Took to Her Grave

“Tell me my son is mine.””

I hadn't intended to shout.

But the words came out louder than I expected.

Margaret flinched.

James stood motionless beside the window.

I looked at my son.

His face had gone pale.

“Dad, what is she talking about?””

I had no answer.

Margaret slowly removed her glasses.

“Richard, please sit down.””

“I don't want to sit down.””

“Then at least let me explain.””

I pointed toward James.

“He has spent seventeen years calling me Dad. I was there when he was born. I held him in the hospital.

I watched him take his first steps. I taught him to ride a bicycle.””

My voice broke.

“Don't tell me there is some question about whether he's my son without explaining every detail.””

Margaret nodded.

“Eleanor loved you. She never stopped loving you.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

She took a deep breath.

“Before Eleanor married you, she had a brief relationship with someone else.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

Margaret looked toward the door.

“Jonathan Pierce.””

The room became painfully quiet.

I felt a strange pressure in my chest.

Jonathan.

My father's financial adviser.

Victoria's former husband.

The man whose voice I had just heard discussing my wife's death.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Margaret continued.

“Eleanor met Jonathan while she was working for your father's foundation. Their relationship ended before she met you.””

“And James?””

Margaret's eyes filled.

“Eleanor believed there was a possibility that Jonathan was the biological father.””

I took a step backward.

“No.””

“Richard—”

“No. That's not possible.””

James looked at me.

“Dad, please.””

I turned away.

I couldn't look at him.

For seventeen years, I had believed my life was simple.

I had married a wonderful woman. We had a son. I built a company. I lost my wife to cancer.

Then I married again, believing I was giving my family another chance at happiness.

Now every part of that history seemed to be changing.

“Did Eleanor know?”” I asked.

Margaret nodded.

“She told me she was worried.””

“Did she have a test?””

“No. She refused to pursue it.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed the relationship was over, and she wanted to build a life with you.””

I looked at Margaret.

“Did Jonathan know?””

“He suspected.””

“Did my father know?””

Margaret hesitated.

“Yes.””

That answer hurt more than I expected.

“My father knew?””

“He found out shortly before James was born.””

I lowered myself into the chair.

Margaret continued.

“Your father was furious. But he also knew Eleanor loved you. He told her that James would always be a Whitmore, regardless of biology.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Then why create the trust?””

“Because he wanted to ensure that James would never be treated differently if the truth came out.””

I stared at the photograph on the mantelpiece.

Eleanor holding James on the beach.

I remembered that day.

James had been three.

He had fallen into the sand and cried until Eleanor picked him up. I had taken the photograph while she laughed.

Nothing about that memory had changed.

But suddenly, I was questioning everything.

James approached me.

“Dad?””

I couldn't answer.

He sat on the chair opposite mine.

“Do you still love me?””

The question shattered whatever remained of my composure.

I looked at him.

His eyes were wet.

He was trying desperately not to cry.

I crossed the room and pulled him into my arms.

“Listen to me.””

He buried his face against my shoulder.

“You are my son.””

“But what if—”

“No.””

I held him tighter.

“You are my son because I raised you. Because I love you. Because every important moment in my life has happened with you beside me.””

He started crying.

I closed my eyes.

“Nothing changes that. Nothing.””

Margaret quietly turned away.

For several minutes, the three of us remained in silence.

Then I released James and faced Margaret.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Eleanor made me promise.””

“Why?””

“She feared Jonathan would use the information against you. Your father believed Jonathan had already been stealing from the family. If Jonathan could prove he was James's biological father, he might challenge the trust.””

I stared at her.

“And Victoria?””

Margaret nodded.

“She discovered the possibility when she was investigating the trust records.””

“So her plan was to make James legally unfit, remove him as beneficiary, and claim the inheritance.””

“Yes.””

“But why involve Dr. Martin?””

Margaret reached into her handbag.

“Because Dr. Martin was also involved in Eleanor's treatment.””

She placed a folded medical document on the desk.

It was dated September 11, four years earlier.

The report listed Eleanor's prescribed medication, dosage, and treatment schedule.

One section had been circled in red.

Medication authorization amended.

I examined the signature.

It belonged to Dr. Martin.

“What was changed?””

Margaret shook her head.

“I don't know the medical consequences. But Eleanor's prescribed treatment was altered without her oncologist's approval.””

“Did the hospital investigate?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because the amendment was approved by someone with authority to access her medical records.””

I looked at the signature again.

Victoria Whitmore.

My wife.

The room seemed to grow colder.

I picked up my phone.

“I'm calling the police.””

Margaret immediately shook her head.

“Wait.””

“Why?””

“Because we don't have the original medical records.””

“The documents are right here.””

“Copies. Victoria knows where the originals are.””

I looked at her.

“Where?””

Margaret took a breath.

“Eleanor kept them in a safe deposit box at the old Whitmore estate.””

I frowned.

“My father's house?””

“Yes.””

“It was sold twelve years ago.””

Margaret nodded.

“But the safe deposit box wasn't part of the property.””

I stared at her.

“Who has access?””

“Jonathan Pierce.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Everything led back to Jonathan.

I called Thomas again.

“Thomas, I need you to locate Jonathan Pierce immediately.””

“I've already started.””

“Good. I want the police involved.””

There was a pause.

“Richard, before we do that, there's something else you should know.””

“What?””

“Dr. Martin contacted my office this morning.””

I straightened.

“Why?””

“He wants to meet you.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

“Where?””

“His private clinic.””

I looked at the clock.

It was 4:35 p.m.

“What does he want?””

Thomas hesitated.

“He says he has evidence concerning Eleanor's death.””

I stared at Margaret.

She looked equally alarmed.

“Did he say what kind of evidence?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“He claims Victoria has been blackmailing him for years.””

I looked at James.

“Tell him I'll meet him.””

Margaret immediately stood.

“Richard, don't go alone.””

“I won't.””

I called Daniel.

Within minutes, he arranged additional security and prepared two vehicles.

James insisted on coming.

I refused.

“Absolutely not.””

“Dad, this is about Mom.””

“And that's exactly why you're staying here.””

“I can help.””

“You've already done more than I could ever ask.””

He looked frustrated.

“Every time I get close to the truth, someone tells me to stay out of it.””

I softened my voice.

“James, I am not trying to shut you out. I'm trying to keep you safe.””

He looked down.

Then he said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

“Mom would have wanted me to know.””

I put my hand on his shoulder.

“And she would have wanted you alive.””

He didn't argue again.

At 6:15 p.m., I arrived at Dr. Martin's clinic in Stamford.

The building was a quiet, modern structure with dark glass windows and a private underground parking garage.

Daniel accompanied me inside.

The receptionist looked nervous when she saw us.

“Dr. Martin is expecting you.””

She led us to a conference room.

The doctor was already waiting.

He looked older than he had in the photographs. His hair was almost completely white, and his hands trembled slightly as he arranged a stack of documents.

“Mr. Whitmore,” he said.

I didn't sit.

“Start talking.””

He swallowed.

“I know you have questions.””

“I have enough questions to fill this building.””

“I understand.””

“Did you alter my wife's medical records?””

He lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

The admission came so quickly that I almost didn't understand it.

“Why?””

“Victoria asked me to.””

“What did you change?””

He looked at Daniel.

“Could we speak privately?””

“No.””

Martin nodded.

Then he opened a folder.

“Eleanor was receiving a medication that was intended to control her symptoms. Victoria asked me to authorize changes to her treatment schedule.””

“Why?””

“She claimed Eleanor was refusing medication and becoming increasingly unstable.””

“Was that true?””

“No.””

I leaned forward.

“Then why did you agree?””

Martin's face crumpled.

“Because Jonathan Pierce had evidence that could destroy my career.””

“What evidence?””

“Financial records. Payments. Documents connecting me to an illegal pharmaceutical distribution network.””

I stared at him.

“Were you supplying Eleanor with unapproved medication?””

He shook his head.

“Not directly. But the altered prescriptions were connected to the same network.””

“Did the changes cause her death?””

Martin closed his eyes.

“I cannot say that with certainty.””

I grabbed the edge of the table.

“Did they make her condition worse?””

“Yes.””

My breathing became uneven.

“Did you know she was dying?””

“Yes.””

“And you still did it?””

He began crying.

“I was afraid.””

I stood.

“Eleanor was afraid too. She was dying, and you made it worse.””

Martin didn't defend himself.

Instead, he pushed a second folder across the table.

“There's something else.””

“What?””

“A recording.””

He placed a small digital recorder on the desk.

“I kept it because I knew Victoria might eventually turn against me.””

I pressed play.

Victoria's voice filled the room.

“Once Eleanor is gone, Richard will be free to move forward.””

Martin answered.

“And the boy?””

“James is protected by the trust.””

“Then we need another solution.””

Victoria laughed.

“Jonathan is already working on that.””

I felt sick.

The recording continued.

Martin asked:

“What if Richard discovers the medication changes?””

Victoria answered:

“He won't.””

“And if he does?””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“By then, he won't have anyone left to believe him.””

The recording ended.

I stared at the device.

Martin wiped his eyes.

“I have more.””

“How much more?””

“Enough to prove she planned this before Eleanor died.””

I reached for the folder.

But before I could open it, Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his face changed.

“Sir.””

“What?””

“It's your residence.””

My heart tightened.

“What happened?””

“There's been an incident.””

“What kind of incident?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“Your son is missing.””

I grabbed the phone.

“Put me through to James!””

Daniel shook his head.

“We can't reach him.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“What about Margaret?””

“She is safe. But she says James received a phone call about twenty minutes ago.””

“From whom?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he showed me a message recovered from James's phone.

If you want to know the truth about your mother, come alone. I have the original recording.

May you like

The message was signed with one name.

Jonathan Pierce.
