Chapter 9: The Secret Buried Before Me

I stared at the birth certificate until the words stopped looking real.

Karen’s name.

The name she had used for decades.

The name everyone knew.

A lie.

But the thing that disturbed me wasn’t that she had changed her name.

People changed names.

People started over.

People ran from their past.

The thing that disturbed me was my father’s handwriting beneath it.

*This is the daughter of the woman who destroyed Laura’s life.*

My mother.

My grandmother.

Karen.

Three generations connected by a secret nobody wanted me to find.

I looked at Daniel.

“Explain.””

He didn’t answer.

I looked at Thomas.

“Explain.””

Still nothing.

My patience disappeared.

“No more silence.””

My voice echoed through my father’s old office.

“No more protecting me. No more promises. No more deciding what I can handle.””

I pointed at the documents.

“I want the truth.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

He looked at the birth certificate.

“The woman who raised Karen was named Evelyn Turner.””

I frowned.

“Turner?””

Thomas nodded.

“Michael Turner’s mother.””

My stomach dropped.

“Michael’s mother?””

“Yes.””

I walked backward slowly.

“So Karen married Michael Turner…”

“Yes.””

“Her own brother?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

The relief lasted only a second.

“Then what?””

Thomas answered quietly.

“Evelyn adopted Michael.””

I waited.

“And Karen?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She was Evelyn’s biological daughter.””

I stared at the papers.

“So Michael and Karen weren’t related.””

“No.””

“Then why did my father write that she was the daughter of the woman who destroyed my mother’s life?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because Evelyn destroyed Laura’s family long before Karen ever met Robert.””

I felt a headache forming.

“Start at the beginning.””

Daniel took a breath.

“Your grandmother and Evelyn were friends.””

I frowned.

“My grandmother?””

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

He walked to the desk.

“Your grandmother, Margaret Bennett, was wealthy.””

I nodded.

“She owned several properties.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“She had a business partner.””

Thomas looked at me.

“Evelyn.””

I felt a chill.

“They worked together?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Money.””

I almost laughed.

It always came back to money.

“Evelyn betrayed her.””

“How?””

“She manipulated accounts. Moved funds. Created debts.””

I looked at the documents.

“And my grandmother found out?””

“Yes.””

“What did she do?””

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“She confronted Evelyn.””

“And?””

“She threatened to expose her.””

I waited.

Then I understood.

“Karen’s mother.””

Daniel nodded.

“She lost everything.””

“So Karen blamed my grandmother.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the birth certificate again.

“But why my mother?””

Thomas answered.

“Because Laura discovered the truth.””

My mother.

Again.

Always my mother.

“What did she discover?””

Thomas sat down.

“After Margaret died, Evelyn disappeared.””

“And Karen?””

“She grew up hearing one version of the story.””

“What version?””

“That your grandmother destroyed her family.””

I looked at him.

“And Karen believed it?””

Daniel nodded.

“She spent her entire life believing your family stole everything from hers.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t explain my father.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“That’s where Laura comes in.””

I waited.

“Your mother found records connecting Karen to Evelyn.””

“Then she warned my father.””

“Yes.””

“But he didn’t believe her.””

“Not at first.””

I looked away.

That sounded exactly like him.

My father wasn’t stupid.

He was kind.

Sometimes too kind.

“What changed his mind?””

Daniel opened the blue box fully.

Inside were folders.

He pulled one out.

“This.””

He handed it to me.

A stack of letters.

Old letters.

The first page had my mother’s handwriting.

*Robert, if you are reading this, it means I was right to be afraid.*

My hands shook.

I read.

*Karen knows about my investigation. She knows I found Evelyn’s records. She knows I discovered why she came into your life.*

I looked up.

“She knew?””

Daniel nodded.

“She always knew your mother was looking.””

I kept reading.

*But the worst part is not that Karen wants revenge. The worst part is that she has convinced herself she is correcting history.*

I stopped.

Correcting history.

That sounded exactly like Karen.

Not stealing.

Not hurting.

Fixing.

The most dangerous people were the ones who believed they were right.

I turned the page.

*Robert, please listen to me. Do not confront her alone. Do not tell her what you know.*

My breathing slowed.

Then I saw the next line.

*She has already taken something from me.*

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

I read the next page.

And my blood went cold.

*She knows about Emily.*

I stopped.

My name.

My mother had written my name.

*She knows Emily is the reason you will never forgive her.*

I couldn’t breathe.

“She knew about me?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Karen knew?””

“Yes.””

“Before she married my father?””

“Yes.””

The room spun.

“She knew I existed?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she pretend to love me?””

Nobody answered.

Because there was no answer that would make it hurt less.

I closed my eyes.

Memories rushed back.

Karen helping me choose a wedding dress.

Karen holding my hand when I gave birth to Mia.

Karen telling me:

“You’re the daughter I never had.””

I had believed every word.

Daniel spoke softly.

“Emily.””

I opened my eyes.

“What?””

“There’s something else.””

I already hated those words.

“What?””

He pulled out another document.

This one was newer.

Very new.

A legal document.

My name was at the top.

My daughter’s name was below mine.

I felt my heart stop.

“What is this?””

Thomas looked away.

Daniel answered.

“Custody papers.””

My fingers went numb.

“Custody?””

“Yes.””

“For Mia?””

“Yes.””

“Who filed them?””

Daniel didn’t speak.

I already knew.

“Karen.””

The anger came back instantly.

“She thinks she can take my daughter?””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She thinks she already has a claim.””

I looked at the papers.

“Why?””

Thomas pointed to a section near the bottom.

I read it.

And my face went cold.

*Grandparent visitation rights.*

“She’s using my father’s name.””

“Yes.””

“She’s saying she has rights because of Robert.””

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“She used my father’s love against me.””

Daniel nodded.

“That was always her plan.””

My phone suddenly rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

“Where is my daughter?””

Silence.

Then Karen’s voice.

“Emily.””

My whole body went tense.

“Where is Mia?””

“She’s safe.””

“Put her on the phone.””

A pause.

Then I heard Mia.

“Mommy?””

I closed my eyes.

“Mia.””

“Mommy, I’m okay.””

I almost broke.

“Are you hurt?””

“No.””

“Where are you?””

Mia didn’t answer.

Karen came back.

“She’s fine.””

“You took my child.””

“I protected her.””

“You kidnapped her.””

“I saved her from you.””

My blood boiled.

“What?””

“You’re destroying everything Robert built.””

“No.””

I looked at the documents.

“You destroyed it.””

Karen became quiet.

Then she said:

“You finally found the box.””

My heart dropped.

“How do you know?””

“Because Daniel was never as careful as he thought.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face changed.

Karen continued.

“Do you know what your father’s biggest mistake was?””

I said nothing.

“Thinking love made people loyal.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Where is Mia?””

Karen ignored the question.

“Your father chose you because he thought you were different.””

A pause.

“But he was wrong.””

My stomach turned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you’re just like your mother.””

I froze.

“Don’t talk about my mother.””

Karen’s voice softened.

“She trusted the wrong people too.””

The call crackled.

Then she whispered:

“Ask Daniel why your mother’s accident report has his name on it.””

I turned slowly.

Toward Daniel.

He went pale.

“What?””

The line went dead.

I stared at Daniel.

He didn’t move.

He didn’t deny it.

And that terrified me.

“Daniel.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Emily…”

“Why is your name on my mother’s accident report?””

He closed his eyes.

And whispered:

“Because I was the last person who saw your mother alive.””

The room went silent.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Karen.

A photo.

Mia standing beside her.

Holding the blue box.

And beneath it were four words.

*Come alone, Emily.*

My heart stopped.

Because in the background of the photograph…

I saw someone else.

Someone standing behind Karen.

Someone I thought was helping me.

May you like

Someone who should not have been there.

Thomas.
