Chapter 8: The Final Piece
I thought I had already lost everything.
I was wrong.
Losing everything would have been easier.
At least then, I would know where the damage ended.
But now I understood something worse.
The people closest to me had built a web of lies so carefully that every answer created another question.
Daniel.
Claire.
The money.
The pills.
The camera.
And now someone else.
Someone in my family.
Detective Lewis met me outside the station.
“We identified the person.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That worried me.
“Detective.””
He handed me a photograph.
I looked down.
My hands went cold.
“No.””
The picture showed my younger brother, Ethan.
My own brother.
The person who had called Maya “princess” since she was born.
The person who had hugged me when my marriage almost fell apart years ago.
“He helped Daniel?””
Detective Lewis nodded.
“How?””
“He provided access.””
“Access to what?””
“Financial records.””
I stared at the picture.
“Why?””
“That’s what we need to find out.””
I drove home without remembering the road.
When I arrived, Ethan was there.
Waiting.
He stood in the driveway.
Like he knew.
Like he had been expecting me.
“You know.””
It wasn’t a question.
I got out of the car.
“How could you?””
His face changed.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“No excuses.””
He looked down.
“I was trying to fix it.””
“Fix what?””
“The situation.””
I laughed.
“The situation?””
“My situation.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not concern.
Not family.
Self-interest.
“You helped Daniel hurt my daughter.””
“I didn’t know it would go this far.””
“You helped him.””
Ethan looked away.
“I thought it was just about money.””
I stepped closer.
“You thought?””
He didn’t answer.
“How much?””
“What?””
“How much did he pay you?””
His silence answered.
I closed my eyes.
My own brother.
The person I trusted.
“You were the one giving him information.””
“Yes.””
“About us?””
“Yes.””
“About Maya?””
He looked away.
That was enough.
I walked inside.
Maya was sitting on the couch.
She looked at me.
“Dad?””
I forced myself to smile.
“Hey.””
“Are you okay?””
The fact that she was asking me broke my heart.
I sat beside her.
“I’m okay.””
She studied my face.
“You’re lying.””
I almost smiled.
She had always been too observant.
Just like her mother.
Except Maya used that gift to care about people.
Others used it to manipulate them.
“I’m tired.””
She leaned against me.
“Me too.””
For a while, we just sat there.
No lies.
No secrets.
Just silence.
The next day, Daniel was arrested at the airport.
But he still had one surprise.
During questioning, he admitted something.
Something none of us expected.
Detective Lewis came to my house that evening.
“He confessed.””
I looked at him.
“About everything?””
“Not everything.””
“What does that mean?””
“He claims Claire wasn’t his only partner.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Ethan?””
Detective Lewis shook his head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
He placed a folder on the table.
Inside were photographs.
Emails.
Documents.
I looked through them.
Then stopped.
Because one name appeared again and again.
A name I knew.
A name that made no sense.
My own mother.
I looked up.
“My mother?””
Detective Lewis nodded.
“She had contact with Daniel months before all of this started.””
I felt dizzy.
“That’s impossible.””
“Marcus.””
“No.””
I pushed the folder away.
“My mother hates Daniel.””
“She did.””
“Did?””
Detective Lewis looked at me.
“Your mother discovered Daniel’s financial problems.””
“So?””
“She used that information.””
I stared.
“For what?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“She wanted control of the family business.””
I felt numb.
The family business.
The thing my father built.
The thing I spent years protecting.
Suddenly, everything looked different.
The money.
The secrets.
The manipulation.
This was never just about Daniel stealing.
It was about someone trying to take everything.
But then Detective Lewis said the one thing I would never forget.
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?””
He opened another file.
“This was found in Daniel’s apartment.””
Inside was a photograph.
An old photograph.
Of Claire.
Of Daniel.
And of someone else.
Someone standing behind them.
Someone I recognized immediately.
The picture was taken fifteen years ago.
Before I met Claire.
Before Maya was born.
May you like
And written on the back were five words:
*The first secret never died.*
