Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Lies
I didn’t remember leaving the house.
I only remembered the sound of my own heartbeat.
Daniel.
The man who had held my daughter as a baby.
The man who had stood beside me during my father’s funeral.
The man who had smiled across our dinner table while hiding a secret.
He had been inside my daughter’s room.
Detective Lewis called for backup immediately.
“Where is Claire?””
I looked at my phone.
Still connected.
She was crying.
“Claire?””
“Yes?””
“Where are you?””
A pause.
“I’m at home.””
“Stay there.””
“Marcus…”
“Stay there.””
I hung up.
When we arrived, Claire was sitting on the front steps.
She looked nothing like the woman I knew.
She looked tired.
Broken.
But I couldn’t forget what she had done.
Not yet.
Detective Lewis approached her.
“Mrs. Carter, we need to ask you more questions.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
Inside the house, investigators searched every room.
I stood in Maya’s bedroom.
The place where my daughter should have felt safe.
The place where someone had violated that safety.
A detective found something hidden behind the closet.
A small camera.
My stomach turned.
“What is that?””
Detective Lewis looked serious.
“We need to examine it.””
“Was Daniel watching her?””
“We don’t know yet.””
But we both knew.
An hour later, the results came.
The camera had been installed three weeks earlier.
The same time Claire started giving Maya the pills.
I felt sick.
Detective Lewis looked at me.
“Marcus, we need you to prepare for something.””
“What?””
“Daniel may not have been trying to hide a crime.””
I stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
“He may have been collecting information.””
“On my daughter?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Detective Lewis didn’t answer.
Because the answer was too disturbing.
Daniel had been building a story.
A story where Maya looked unstable.
A story where Claire looked like a concerned mother.
A story where I looked like an overprotective father.
Then I understood.
“He wanted people to think Maya was the problem.””
Detective Lewis nodded.
“Yes.””
I felt something break inside me.
Not sadness.
Not anger.
Something colder.
Determination.
That night, Claire finally told me everything.
Not in the house.
Not privately.
With Detective Lewis present.
Because I no longer trusted private conversations.
Claire sat across from us.
“When Daniel first approached me, he said he needed help.””
I listened.
“He said he was in trouble.””
“What kind of trouble?””
“He owed money.””
I stared at her.
“And you helped him?””
She looked down.
“I thought I was saving him.””
“You gave him access to our accounts.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he promised he would repay everything.””
I shook my head.
“You risked our family for him.””
“I know.””
“No. You don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t know what you did.””
She started crying.
“I know.””
“No.””
I looked toward the stairs.
“Maya trusted you.””
Claire covered her face.
“I know.””
“She was afraid of you.””
That destroyed her.
But I wasn’t finished.
“She thought you would choose Daniel over her.””
“I never meant—”
“You don’t get to say you didn’t mean it.””
Silence.
Detective Lewis interrupted.
“Mrs. Carter, why did Daniel tell you to give Maya the medication?””
Claire swallowed.
“He said it would make her forget.””
The room went still.
“Forget what?””
Claire looked terrified.
“He said Maya had seen documents.””
“What documents?””
“He didn’t tell me.””
I stood.
“You expect me to believe you?””
“It’s true.””
“Then why didn’t you ask?””
She looked at me.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Daniel?””
She nodded.
“He threatened me.””
“With what?””
Claire’s face went pale.
“He said if I stopped helping him, he would make sure everyone knew about the money.””
I stared.
“You were protecting yourself.””
“Yes.””
“And Maya?””
Claire started crying.
“I failed her.””
For the first time, I believed she understood that.
But understanding didn’t erase damage.
The next morning, Detective Lewis called.
“We found Daniel.””
I stood immediately.
“Where?””
“He’s leaving the state.””
“Did you arrest him?””
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
A pause.
“Because he has someone helping him.””
My heart sank.
“Who?””
Detective Lewis lowered his voice.
“The person helping Daniel escape…”
May you like
I waited.
“Is someone inside your family.””
