Chapter 6: The Ghost Behind the Empire

Nobody spoke after Adrian showed us the message.

Not because we didn't have questions.

Because every person in that ballroom had the same one.

*How could a dead man send a message?*

I looked at Adrian's phone screen again.

Three words.

*I know everything.*

The message sat there like a warning from another world.

Adrian stared at it.

All the confidence he had carried throughout the night disappeared.

The man who had faced reporters.

The man who had threatened Claire.

The man who had looked me in the eyes after destroying my life.

He was afraid.

And that was the first thing that made sense.

"What does that mean?"" I asked.

Adrian didn't answer.

"Adrian.""

Still nothing.

Claire stepped closer.

"Who sent the message?""

His fingers tightened around the phone.

"No one.""

I almost laughed.

"No one?""

He looked at me.

"Forget it.""

The old Adrian was trying to return.

The commanding voice.

The dismissive tone.

The expectation that everyone would move on because he said so.

But nobody moved.

Not anymore.

Daniel looked at the phone.

His face changed.

"That's impossible.""

Everyone turned toward him.

I looked at him.

"You know something.""

Daniel swallowed.

"I know that number.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Whose number is it?""

Daniel looked at Adrian.

Then at me.

"His father’s.""

The ballroom went silent.

Adrian's father.

Richard Whitmore.

A man whose name was carved into the entrance of the Whitmore Holdings headquarters.

A man everyone described as a brilliant businessman.

A man who had built the company before handing it to his son.

A man who had supposedly died during a sailing accident ten years ago.

"That can't be possible," I whispered.

Daniel shook his head.

"I thought the same thing.""

Adrian finally spoke.

"Stop.""

The word came out quietly.

But everyone heard it.

Daniel looked at him.

"You knew.""

Adrian's face hardened.

"Be careful.""

"You're still protecting him?""

The question shocked me.

"Protecting who?"" I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

"Richard Whitmore wasn't the man everyone thought he was.""

Adrian's expression turned dangerous.

"Daniel.""

But Daniel continued.

"Your father-in-law discovered years ago that Adrian wasn't just hiding money.""

He looked at Adrian.

"He was hiding what he did to his own father.""

My stomach dropped.

"What are you saying?""

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian laughed.

A short, bitter laugh.

"You don't know what you're talking about.""

But he sounded different.

Defensive.

Not angry.

Scared.

Daniel looked at me.

"Elena, your father didn't distrust Adrian because of the foundation.""

I felt my heartbeat increase.

"Then why?""

Daniel took a breath.

"Because he believed Adrian had something to do with Richard Whitmore's death.""

The room exploded.

People spoke over each other.

Guests who had stayed silent all night finally reacted.

A reporter shouted:

"Are you accusing Adrian Whitmore of murder?""

Adrian turned immediately.

"Absolutely not.""

His voice was sharp.

Controlled.

But his hands were shaking.

"I have spent ten years hearing lies about my family.""

He looked around.

"My father died in an accident.""

Daniel didn't respond.

Neither did Claire.

And somehow that silence felt louder than an accusation.

I looked at Adrian.

"Tell me he's wrong.""

He looked at me.

For a moment, I saw something.

Pain.

Real pain.

Then it disappeared.

"Elena, you don't understand.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

My voice broke.

"I understand exactly.""

"No, you don't.""

He stepped closer.

"My father was not a good man.""

The room quieted.

Nobody expected that.

Adrian continued.

"Everyone thinks they knew him.""

His laugh was empty.

"They didn't.""

I watched his face.

For the first time, Adrian wasn't performing.

He wasn't charming.

He wasn't pretending.

He looked like someone carrying a secret for years.

And I hated that part of me still wanted to understand him.

Because that was how he always won.

He showed just enough vulnerability to make people forget what he had done.

"Then tell us the truth," Claire said.

Adrian looked at her.

"You want the truth?""

"Yes.""

He looked toward the cameras.

The guests.

The entire room.

Then back at me.

"My father built his empire by destroying people.""

Nobody moved.

"He took companies from families who had no power to fight him.""

Daniel nodded.

"That part is true.""

Adrian continued.

"He lied. He manipulated. He ruined lives.""

His eyes met mine.

"And everyone expected me to become him.""

A strange silence followed.

I hated that I understood the feeling.

Because Adrian had always talked about his father.

But never in detail.

Never with warmth.

Never with love.

Only disappointment.

Anger.

Resentment.

"That still doesn't explain the message," Claire said.

Adrian looked away.

"No.""

His voice dropped.

"It doesn't.""

Before anyone could ask another question, the ballroom doors opened.

Two police officers entered.

The crowd moved aside.

One of them approached Claire.

"Ms. Bennett?""

"Yes.""

"We need to speak with you.""

She nodded.

Then looked at me.

"Stay with Daniel.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

Her expression was serious.

"Because someone has been trying very hard to separate you from the people who can protect you.""

The words chilled me.

I looked toward Adrian.

He wasn't watching Claire.

He was watching the doors.

Like he expected someone else to enter.

A person he feared more than the police.

A person he couldn't control.

"Adrian," I said quietly.

His eyes moved to mine.

"Who sent that message?""

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Who?""

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

"My father isn't dead.""

The world stopped.

Even the noise of the ballroom disappeared.

I stared at him.

"What?""

Adrian looked at the phone.

"He disappeared.""

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

Adrian looked at him.

"You never knew the truth.""

Daniel went pale.

"What are you saying?""

"My father wasn't killed.""

A pause.

"He left.""

I felt dizzy.

"Why?""

Adrian looked at me.

And the answer terrified me.

"Because he knew someone was trying to kill him.""

The room became silent again.

I thought about my father's letter.

I thought about his warning.

I thought about all the secrets hidden beneath eight years of marriage.

"What does your father have to do with me?"" I asked.

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Then he said something that changed everything.

"He was the one who told me to marry you.""

My blood went cold.

"What?""

Daniel looked shocked.

Claire stopped talking with the officers.

Everyone was listening.

Adrian continued.

"Before my father disappeared, he told me Elena Bennett was the only person who could destroy everything he built.""

I stared at him.

My name sounded unfamiliar.

Like it belonged to someone else.

"You married me because of him?""

Adrian looked away.

And that was the answer.

Eight years.

Eight years of memories.

Our first date.

Our wedding.

Our home.

Every moment I thought was real.

And now I didn't know what had been true.

"You were never supposed to be my wife," I whispered.

Adrian looked at me.

"I didn't say that.""

"You didn't have to.""

The pain was different now.

The affair had hurt.

The fraud had terrified me.

But this?

This made me question every beautiful memory I had.

Because what if none of it belonged to me?

What if I had been chosen?

Not loved.

Chosen.

Claire returned.

"Elena.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

She held a document.

Another document.

I was beginning to hate paper.

"This was found inside the evidence drive Daniel brought.""

My heart sank.

"What is it?""

Claire looked at Adrian.

Then me.

"It's a copy of the original agreement between Richard Whitmore and Adrian.""

I took the paper.

My eyes moved across the page.

At first, the words made no sense.

Then one sentence stood out.

A sentence that made my hands go cold.

*The marriage must continue until Elena discovers the truth on her own.*

I looked up.

"Continue?""

Nobody spoke.

I kept reading.

The next line was worse.

*If Elena leaves before that time, the contingency plan will be activated.*

My voice barely worked.

"What contingency plan?""

Adrian didn't answer.

He looked at the document.

Then at me.

And for the first time that night, I saw genuine fear.

Not because he was exposed.

Because something worse was about to happen.

Claire took the paper from my hand.

Her face had gone pale.

"Elena...""

"What?""

She looked at Adrian.

"The contingency plan is not about money.""

A pause.

"It's about your life.""

The lights above us suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire ballroom went dark.

People screamed.

Emergency lights turned on.

And somewhere near the entrance, a man's voice spoke calmly through the darkness.

"Hello, Elena.""

Every person froze.

Because the voice was old.

Familiar.

And impossible.

"Sorry it took me so long to come home.""

The emergency lights flickered again.

And when they came back on...

An elderly man stood beside the ballroom doors.

The same face from every Whitmore family portrait.

The man everyone believed was dead.

Richard Whitmore.

Adrian's father.

May you like

Alive.

And looking directly at me.
