Chapter 4: The Recordings Behind the Locked Door

I read my father's message three times before I understood what it meant.

The footage from tonight isn't the only recording she thought she'd erased.

Ethan sat beside me, clutching the edge of his blanket. Downstairs, I could hear my father moving through the house, opening doors and checking locks. Every sound made my brother's shoulders tense.

“Lily?”” he whispered.

I slipped my phone into my pocket.

“I'm going to talk to Dad for a minute. I'll be right back.””

His hand closed around my wrist.

“Don't leave me alone with her.””

The fear in his voice stopped me cold.

I sat back down.

“I won't. I promise.””

“But you have to go downstairs.””

“I can wait.””

He stared at me as if he didn't understand why anyone would choose to stay in a bedroom when something terrible might be happening elsewhere.

That realization hurt more than anything.

I reached for his hand.

“Ethan, you know how you used to make those Lego cities?””

He nodded cautiously.

“You'd spend hours building them. If one of the towers fell, you'd get upset, but you'd never throw the whole thing away. You'd rebuild it.””

His eyes filled.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

“Everything. Our family is going to be different after tonight. I don't know exactly what that looks like yet. But we're going to rebuild it, one piece at a time.””

He leaned against me.

“Even if Dad doesn't forgive himself?””

I swallowed.

“Especially then.””

After he settled beneath the blankets, I left the bedroom door open and walked downstairs.

I found Dad in his office, standing in front of the open safe. His laptop glowed on the desk, and several files were displayed across the screen.

He looked as though he hadn't aged in years but had lost a decade of his life in a single night.

“Where's Vanessa?”” I asked.

“Locked in our bedroom, according to her.”” He rubbed his forehead.

“She told me not to disturb her.””

“Did you tell her about the other recordings?””

“No.””

“Good.””

Dad turned the laptop toward me.

The security system had cameras in four locations: the front entrance, the garage, the back patio, and the kitchen. The kitchen camera was the only one that captured the incident with Ethan.

But the cloud archive contained dozens of older clips.

Some were ordinary. Cooper sleeping near the back door. A delivery driver leaving a package. Dad returning from work.

Others showed Vanessa entering the kitchen alone, looking toward the ceiling, and adjusting the camera angle.

“What are these?”” I asked.

“Marcus helped me access the archived footage. Some files were marked as deleted, but the system had retained backup copies.””

Dad clicked a folder dated three months earlier.

The recording showed Vanessa standing at the kitchen island while Ethan sat across from her.

There was no audio.

At first, she appeared to be talking to him normally.

Then she pushed a plate toward him.

Ethan shook his head.

Vanessa pointed toward the floor.

He stood, hesitated, and disappeared from the camera's view.

A minute later, he returned carrying a dustpan and brush.

Vanessa pointed to a small area beside the refrigerator.

Ethan knelt and began sweeping.

She watched him for nearly two minutes before shaking her head and pointing again.

He started over.

My fingers curled around the edge of the desk.

“What happened here?””

Dad opened another recording.

This one showed Ethan carrying a laundry basket down the hallway. Vanessa entered the frame behind him and removed a shirt from the basket. She held it up, spoke to him, then dropped it onto the floor.

Ethan picked it up.

She dropped it again.

He bent down.

Again.

Again.

On the sixth attempt, Ethan began crying.

Vanessa folded her arms until he finished.

I turned away from the screen.

“Dad, how long has she been doing this?””

“I don't know.””

He sounded sick.

“Why didn't we notice?””

I wanted to tell him that he had been working too much, that Vanessa had isolated Ethan from us, that grief had made all of us desperate for normality.

But none of those explanations could erase what we were seeing.

“We didn't know what to look for,” I said finally.

“Now we do.””

Dad clicked another file.

The date was six weeks earlier.

Vanessa stood in the kitchen holding a red marker. Ethan sat at the table, his school backpack on the floor beside him.

She placed a sheet of paper in front of him.

He shook his head.

She tapped the paper with the marker.

After several seconds, he picked it up and began writing.

When he finished, she took the paper, inspected it, and nodded.

Then she folded it and placed it in her pocket.

Dad paused the video.

“What's she making him write?””

“I don't know.””

“Could it be a school assignment?””

“Maybe. But why would she take it away from him?””

We looked at each other.

Neither of us wanted to say what we were thinking.

Then Dad opened the newest file.

It had been created at 9:14 p.m., just minutes before he called me.

The kitchen was empty.

The dog bowl sat near the pantry.

Vanessa entered carrying a sheet of paper and a pen. She placed both on the island, then looked directly at the camera.

Even without sound, her expression was unmistakable.

She was angry.

She paced from the refrigerator to the back door, speaking to someone outside the frame. Then she grabbed the paper and tore it in half.

She threw the pieces into the trash.

A moment later, Ethan appeared in the doorway.

Vanessa pointed at the floor.

He shook his head.

She stepped toward him.

The recording ended when she unplugged the camera.

Dad leaned closer to the screen.

“Wait.””

He rewound the footage.

“Look at her hand.””

Vanessa had been holding something small and black.

A flash drive.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What's on that drive?””

“I don't know.””

“Could it contain the videos Ethan mentioned?””

Dad closed his eyes.

“Possibly.””

We sat in silence until I heard a door open upstairs.

Then Vanessa's voice floated down the staircase.

“David?””

Dad shut the laptop.

“What?””

“I need to speak with you.””

“Not now.””

“This is important.””

She appeared at the office door wearing jeans and a sweater, her hair tied back. Her face was pale, but her eyes were alert.

She looked at me, then at the laptop.

“What are you doing?””

“Reviewing the security footage,” Dad replied.

Vanessa's lips parted.

“You said you were going to bed.””

“I changed my mind.””

She stepped inside.

“David, I think we've all had a very emotional evening. We should discuss this privately, without Lily interfering.””

Dad stood.

“Lily is Ethan's sister. She's staying.””

Vanessa looked at me with open contempt.

“Of course she is. She has always wanted to be the most important person in this family.””

“Stop,” Dad said.

“No, David. You need to hear this. Your daughter has never accepted me. She has been waiting for a reason to turn you against me, and now she's exploiting Ethan's behavior to do exactly that.””

Dad's expression hardened.

“You don't get to talk about my son as if he's a problem you have to manage.””

Vanessa drew a breath.

“I love him.””

“Then explain the recordings.””

She went still.

“What recordings?””

“The ones showing you humiliating him. The ones showing you making him repeat chores until he cries. The ones showing you forcing him to write something you later tore up.””

For a moment, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.

Then her face twisted with anger.

“You had no right to watch those.””

Dad stared at her.

“They're recordings from my own home.””

“You were spying on me!””

“I was watching my house.””

“You made me look like a monster!””

Her voice cracked on the final word.

I stepped forward.

“No, Vanessa. You did that yourself.””

She turned toward me so sharply that her hair swung across her cheek.

“You think you're so righteous. You have no idea what it takes to raise a damaged child.””

Dad moved between us.

“That's enough.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I gave up so much for this family. I put my life on hold. I tried to be patient with Ethan, but he resents me. He has never wanted me here.””

Dad's voice lowered.

“Did you make him write something tonight?””

She didn't answer.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at the laptop.

Then she looked at Dad.

Finally, she whispered, “I was trying to protect myself.””

“From what?””

She pressed her lips together.

I could see her calculating, searching for a version of the truth that would leave her with something to bargain with.

Then she said, “You don't understand what Ethan has been doing.””

Dad stared at her.

“What has Ethan been doing?””

Vanessa's tears disappeared.

“He has been stealing from you.””

The words hung in the office.

I felt a flash of disbelief.

“What?””

She turned toward Dad.

“Money has been disappearing from your desk. Your watch went missing last month. I found cash in Ethan's bedroom. I've been trying to handle it privately because I didn't want to destroy your relationship with him.””

Dad's expression changed, but not in the way she expected.

“Where is the cash?””

“In his room.””

“How much?””

“I don't remember.””

“Then show me.””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I don't think that's necessary.””

“You just accused my son of stealing. Show me.””

She looked at me, furious.

“You see? This is what I mean. Nobody listens to me.””

Dad stepped toward the door.

“We're going to Ethan's room.””

“No.””

The word escaped her before she could stop it.

Dad turned.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa's hands began to shake.

“I said he's asleep. You shouldn't wake him.””

“Then you can tell me where the money is.””

She said nothing.

Dad waited.

Finally, Vanessa whispered, “I don't have it anymore.””

“Where is it?””

“I spent it.””

The admission was so quiet that I almost missed it.

Dad stared at her.

“Whose money did you spend?””

She looked toward the floor.

“David, please.””

“Whose money?””

Vanessa's shoulders sagged.

“Yours.””

Dad stepped back as though she'd struck him.

For several seconds, I could hear only the hum of the laptop fan.

Then he asked, “How much?””

She began crying again.

“I don't know.””

May you like

And for the first time that night, I realized the cruelty inflicted on Ethan might not be Vanessa's only secret.

It might not even be her biggest one.
