Chapter 9: The Woman Who Took Back Her Name

Victor Vale entered the restaurant like he owned it.

Maybe he thought he did.

Men like Victor always carried themselves that way.

They believed wealth was ownership.

They believed fear was respect.

Fifteen years earlier, Victor had tried to buy Thorne Meridian.

Not invest.

Not partner.

Buy.

When I refused, he launched a campaign against me.

Lawsuits.

Rumors.

Public attacks.

He spent millions trying to destroy my reputation.

He failed.

And before leaving the business world, he told me something I never forgot.

“Eleanor, you can win a battle and still lose the war.””

At the time, I thought it was arrogance.

Now I wondered if it was a warning.

Victor stopped beside our table.

“Eleanor.””

His smile was almost friendly.

“Still impossible to kill.””

Celeste froze.

I remained seated.

“You look disappointed.””

He laughed.

“Not disappointed.””

He pulled out the chair across from me.

“Impressed.””

“You tried to murder me.””

He looked around.

People were nearby.

Normal people.

Eating dinner.

Laughing.

Living.

Victor lowered his voice.

“I didn’t push you.””

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“You simply arranged the people who did.””

For the first time, his smile weakened.

Interesting.

He had not expected me to know everything.

“I underestimated you.””

“You underestimated me because you believed my age made me weak.””

“No.””

He leaned forward.

“I underestimated you because I believed love would make you weak.””

That sentence hurt because it was true.

For years, I had protected Julian.

Protected Richard.

Protected everyone.

And they had mistaken protection for weakness.

“What do you want?”” I asked.

“The company.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course.””

“You built something extraordinary.””

“Something you couldn’t build.””

His expression changed.

A small crack.

“You always did enjoy reminding people.””

“No.””

I leaned forward.

“I enjoy reminding myself.””

Victor smiled.

“Still arrogant.””

“Still alive.””

Silence.

Then Victor placed a folder on the table.

“You should look at this.””

I did not touch it.

“What is it?””

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

“That your son is not the person you think he is.””

I stared at him.

“You expect me to believe you?””

“No.””

He smiled.

“I expect you to investigate.””

That bothered me.

Because confidence was dangerous.

“What are you hiding?””

“Nothing.””

Everyone who says that is hiding something.

Victor stood.

“Your son was useful.””

“Useful?””

“Yes.””

“He’s your partner.””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

“He was your son first.””

I felt something cold move through me.

“What does that mean?””

Victor looked toward the window.

“Ask him why he never questioned the adoption records.””

My entire body went still.

“What?””

Victor smiled.

And walked away.

I remained frozen.

Adoption records.

The words did not make sense.

Julian was my son.

I remembered his birth.

The hospital.

The first time I held him.

The tiny fingers wrapped around mine.

Impossible.

But then again…

So was my family trying to kill me.

I opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Birth records.

Medical files.

A DNA report.

My hands trembled.

Celeste looked at me.

“Eleanor?””

I could not answer.

Because on the first page was a name.

Not Julian Thorne.

Another name.

A name I had never seen before.

I read the report again.

Then again.

My mind refused to understand.

The man who had tried to destroy me.

The man who had stolen my company.

The man who had stood beside my husband and son.

Had just revealed the truth.

Julian was not only trying to take my empire.

He was hiding who he really was.

I left the restaurant without saying another word.

I needed answers.

Not from Victor.

Not from Celeste.

From Richard.

Because if the documents were real…

If the secret was true…

Then my husband had spent forty-six years building a family on a lie.

And when I reached home, I found Richard waiting in my office.

He looked at my face.

He knew.

“Where did you get those?””

I placed the folder on my desk.

“Tell me the truth.””

Richard said nothing.

“Who is Julian?””

His face collapsed.

Not with surprise.

With fear.

And that was when I knew.

He had been waiting for this day.

“I was going to tell you,” he whispered.

I stared at him.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Almost frighteningly calm.

“You were hoping I would die before I found out.””

Richard looked down.

And after forty-six years of marriage…

My husband finally told me the truth.

“Julian was never your son.””

I felt the room disappear.

The walls.

The floor.

Everything.

Then Richard added the words that changed my entire life.

“And I’m not the only person who lied to you.””

May you like

Because behind him, the office door slowly opened.

And Julian was standing there.
