Chapter 8: The Secret In The Hospital Room
I couldn’t move.
The person who was with my wife when she died.
For five years, I believed I knew that night.
I believed I knew every detail.
I was wrong.
“Who was there?””
Tara looked at the floor.
“I can’t tell you.””
My anger returned.
“You don’t get to do that anymore.””
She looked up.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
My voice broke.
“You let my daughter carry your secrets. You let me believe things that weren’t true.””
“I was scared.””
“Everyone is always scared.””
I pointed toward the door.
“But somehow Maya was the one who paid the price.””
Tara closed her eyes.
“I know.””
The honesty surprised me.
“What?””
“I know.””
For the first time in years, my sister looked small.
Not powerful.
Not cruel.
Just broken.
“I made mistakes.””
“You destroyed trust.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
She sat down.
“Because I spent my entire life watching everyone choose you.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“You were the responsible one.””
She laughed bitterly.
“You had the perfect family. The perfect marriage. The perfect daughter.””
“That’s not true.””
“It was to me.””
I shook my head.
“Tara…”
“No.””
She wiped her face.
“I know what I did was wrong.””
She looked at me.
“But I was tired of being the person everyone saved.””
The words reminded me of what my wife wrote.
She confused being loved with being rescued.
“I never saw you that way.””
“That’s the problem.””
She whispered.
“You never saw anything.””
That hurt because there was truth in it.
Maybe I had been so focused on protecting people that I never noticed what was happening around me.
“Who was with my wife?””
Tara went silent.
Then:
“The night she died, I wasn’t alone.””
“Who?””
“She called someone.””
“Who?””
Tara looked at me.
“Your wife called Anthony.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She asked him to come.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“But you know something.””
Tara looked away.
“I know he arrived before you.””
My stomach dropped.
“Before me?””
“Yes.””
The memories came rushing back.
That night.
I was stuck in traffic after leaving work.
Anthony called me.
Told me to hurry.
Said the doctors were worried.
I thought he was helping.
I thought he was just family.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Tara’s voice softened.
“Because your wife asked us not to.””
“Why?””
“Because she was trying to protect you.””
Again.
That word.
Protect.
Everyone kept using it.
Everyone kept making decisions for me.
“What happened in that room?””
Tara shook her head.
“You need to ask Anthony.””
I left immediately.
I didn’t call.
I didn’t warn him.
I drove straight to his house.
When he opened the door, he already knew.
Because his face changed the second he saw me.
“Daniel.””
“Tell me about that night.””
He stepped back.
“Who told you?””
“Answer me.””
He looked exhausted.
“She called me.””
“Why?””
“Because she needed help.””
“With what?””
He looked away.
“With the will.””
My heart raced.
“She knew she was dying.””
“Yes.””
“And she knew about Tara.””
“Yes.””
“What did she ask you to do?””
Anthony sat down.
“She wanted me to make sure Maya was protected.””
I swallowed.
“Protected from what?””
His eyes filled.
“From everyone.””
The answer hurt.
Everyone.
Not just Tara.
Everyone.
“She knew people would fight over money.””
I looked at him.
“She knew?””
“She knew her death would bring out the worst in people.””
“Did she know about Tara stealing?””
“Yes.””
“Did she know about you borrowing money?””
“Yes.””
I stared.
“Then why trust you?””
Anthony looked down.
“Because I was the only one who admitted what I did.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Honesty.
Even imperfect honesty.
“I was there when she wrote the final letter.””
My breath caught.
“She recorded the video too.””
“Where is it?””
Anthony looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“What do you mean?””
“She gave it to someone.””
“Who?””
Anthony hesitated.
Then:
“Maya.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She asked Maya to keep it safe.””
My heart stopped.
“Maya had it?””
“Yes.””
I rushed home.
“Maya!””
She came downstairs quickly.
“What happened?””
“Your mother gave you a video.””
Her face changed.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“Maya.””
She looked away.
That was enough.
“You knew.””
“I didn’t know what was on it.””
“But you had it.””
She nodded.
“Where is it?””
Her eyes filled.
“I destroyed it.””
I felt like the floor disappeared.
“You what?””
“I destroyed it.””
“Why?””
She cried.
“Because Mom told me to.””
I stared.
“What?””
Maya covered her face.
“She said if anyone tried to use the video against you, I had to make sure nobody could.””
My voice became quiet.
“What was on it?””
Maya looked at me.
And whispered:
“Mom confessed something.””
“What?””
“She said she lied to you.””
The room went silent.
“She said she wasn’t sick when you thought she was.””
I stopped breathing.
Maya’s voice trembled.
“She said she knew the truth would hurt you.””
I stepped closer.
“What truth?””
My daughter looked at me.
And then she said:
“Dad…”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Mom wasn’t protecting you from Aunt Tara.””
May you like
A pause.
“She was protecting you from herself.””
