Chapter 8: My Father's Last Secret
I stared at the hospital bracelet until the letters seemed to move.
Return her home.
My father's handwriting.
The same man who had taught me to tie my shoes, who had sat beside my hospital bed when I broke my arm, who had once driven six hours through a snowstorm because I had called him crying after my first serious breakup.
He had been dead for fourteen years.
Yet his handwriting had appeared on a hospital bracelet connected to a child who had supposedly been born four years ago.
“Where did you find this?”” I asked Officer Daniels.
“Inside Vanessa's car. It was hidden beneath the spare tire in the trunk.””
“Was there anything else?””
“A photograph. A set of keys. And a receipt from a storage facility.””
I looked at Thomas.
He had gone pale.
“What?”” I demanded.
He shook his head.
“Ryan, you need to leave this alone.””
I stepped toward him.
“You just told me my father was involved. You don't get to tell me to stop now.””
Thomas glanced at the officers.
“Not here.””
“Then where?””
He looked toward the road.
“There was a storage unit your father rented before he died. I helped him move some boxes into it. He told me never to open them.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“How long have you known?””
“Since your father died.””
“And you never told me?””
“He made me promise.””
I laughed without humor.
“Apparently everyone in my life has been making promises to dead people.””
Thomas looked ashamed.
“I thought the boxes contained business records.””
“And now?””
“Now I think they contain the reason Claire disappeared.””
Officer Daniels stepped between us.
“Mr. Reed, you're coming with us.””
Thomas didn't resist.
As the officers escorted him toward their vehicle, he turned back to me.
“Ryan, your father wasn't the man you think he was.””
I watched the police car pull away.
Then I looked at the bracelet again.
I needed to find that storage unit.
I needed to know why my father's name was connected to Emily.
And I needed to know whether Lily was the daughter I had believed her to be.
Megan called while I was driving.
“Ryan, the police have found something.””
“What?””
“They recovered footage from a traffic camera near the harbor. Vanessa's car was there twenty minutes before the body was discovered.””
“Whose body?””
“They're still identifying it.””
“Was Claire there?””
Megan hesitated.
“There's something else. The camera caught another vehicle leaving the harbor.””
“What vehicle?””
“A white van.””
My grip tightened on the steering wheel.
“Can they identify the driver?””
“Not yet. But the van was registered to a medical transport company that closed eight years ago.””
I remembered Thomas's words.
Children being moved between families.
Hospital records altered.
Babies disappearing.
“What's the company's name?””
Megan told me.
The name meant nothing at first.
Then I remembered the logo from the folder in the basement.
A blue circle with a white cross.
My father had kept a calendar on his office wall with the same logo.
He had told me it belonged to a charitable organization that transported patients who couldn't afford private medical care.
I pulled over.
“Megan, I need you to do something for me.””
“What?””
“Find out whether Dad ever worked with a medical transport company.””
“Ryan, the police should handle this.””
“They are handling it. But I need to know what he did before he died.””
Megan went quiet.
Then she said, “I'll see what I can find.””
I drove to the storage facility.
It sat behind a row of warehouses, surrounded by chain-link fencing and security cameras. The office clerk looked at the documents Officer Daniels had given me and led me to Unit 214.
The lock had already been removed.
Inside were six cardboard boxes, a metal filing cabinet, and a wooden desk.
Everything had been arranged with my father's meticulous precision.
I stood in the doorway for a long moment.
I hadn't seen his handwriting in years.
His labels were still attached to the boxes.
TAX RECORDS.
HOUSEHOLD PAPERS.
INSURANCE.
The final box had no label.
I opened it.
Inside were photographs, hospital documents, and a stack of letters tied with string.
The first photograph showed my father standing outside St. Agnes Hospital.
Beside him stood Vanessa's father.
They were shaking hands.
The date was twenty-three years earlier.
I turned the photograph over.
First agreement. June 2003.
My hands began to shake.
I opened the first letter.
Arthur,
The arrangement must remain confidential. We have families waiting, and the hospital cannot afford another investigation.
The children must be registered under the names we agreed upon.
No records should be released without my authorization.
The letter was signed by a man named Dr. Philip Warren.
I recognized the name from the hospital records.
He had been the director of St. Agnes for nearly thirty years.
I opened another letter.
Arthur,
The Bennett family has become a problem. Claire is asking questions about the transfers, and she has access to records she should never have seen.
You assured me that your son would remain unaware of the arrangement.
Please speak with Vanessa before Claire contacts him.
My father's response was attached.
I will speak to her. But I will not allow another child to disappear.
I sat down heavily.
My father had known.
He had known about the hospital records, the transfers, and the people involved.
He had also known about me.
The next letter was dated two weeks before his death.
Philip,
I have made a terrible mistake.
I believed I was helping families who had nowhere else to turn. I believed every child had been placed with a willing parent.
Now I know that some of the mothers never agreed to surrender their children.
I will provide the evidence to the authorities.
If anything happens to me, make sure my son receives the file.
I stared at the paper.
My father had died in a car accident on a rainy highway.
The police had said he lost control of the vehicle.
No alcohol. No other vehicle involved.
Just a wet road and a terrible accident.
But the next document was a police report.
It stated that the brakes on his car had been tampered with.
I read the report twice.
Then I heard a sound behind me.
A key turning in the unit door.
I stood.
“Who's there?””
The door opened.
Vanessa stepped inside.
Her hair was tangled, and her coat was stained with mud. She looked exhausted, as though she hadn't slept in days.
I stared at her.
“Where is Emily?””
She closed the door.
“Safe.””
“Where?””
“I can't tell you.””
I moved toward her.
“Tell me now.””
Vanessa flinched, but she didn't step back.
“Ryan, please. I came here because I need you to understand what happened.””
“Then explain the bracelet.””
She looked at the document in my hand.
Her face crumpled.
“Your father gave it to me.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted me to return Emily to you.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Which Emily?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“The one you never brought home.””
I stared at her.
“Where is she?””
“I don't know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Ryan, I swear to you, I don't know where she is.””
I stepped back.
“Then why did you take Lily?””
Vanessa looked up sharply.
“I didn't take Lily.””
“You just told me the child I brought home wasn't mine.””
“I said you never brought home your biological daughter. I didn't say Lily wasn't yours.””
I couldn't make sense of her words.
“Explain it.””
Vanessa sank into the chair beside the desk.
“The night Lily was born, Claire's twin girls were already being monitored by Dr. Warren. Your father had discovered the illegal transfers and was trying to stop them. Claire had been moved to another hospital under a false name.””
“Why?””
“Because she was afraid someone would take her babies.””
“Who?””
“Dr. Warren. Your father.
My father. They were all involved in the same system, although not for the same reasons.””
I stared at her.
“My father was trying to stop it.””
“Yes.””
“And yours?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“He built it.””
The room seemed to shrink around me.
“Why did you marry me?””
She looked at me as if I had struck her.
“Because I loved you.””
“Did you know about Claire when we met?””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
I felt something inside me go numb.
“You knew she was alive?””
“Not at first.””
“When?””
“Before our wedding.””
I gripped the edge of the desk.
“You let me marry you while knowing the woman I loved might still be alive?””
Vanessa began to cry.
“I thought she was dead. I had been told she died after the accident. I believed it.””
“But you knew about Emily.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of losing you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You didn't lose me. You built an entire life around a lie and expected me never to notice.””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I was trying to protect Lily.””
“From what?””
“From her biological mother.””
I stared at her.
“Claire?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Claire came back after the girls were born. She wanted both babies. She wanted you to know everything.
But your father had discovered that Dr. Warren was using the hospital to conceal children whose births had been altered. If Claire went to the police, the entire operation would be exposed.””
“So my father helped hide the children?””
“He helped move some of them to safety. But he couldn't stop all of it.””
I looked at the documents scattered across the desk.
“And you?””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I took one of the babies home.””
“Which one?””
“I don't know.””
The words came out as a whisper.
I stared at her.
“You were there. You carried the baby. You raised Lily.””
“I was given a child and told she was yours. I believed the paperwork. I believed the hospital. I believed the people who said Claire's other baby had died.””
“Until when?””
“Until Claire sent me the locket.””
Vanessa reached into her coat and pulled out the silver locket.
I stared at it.
“What's inside?””
She opened it.
There was a tiny photograph of two newborn girls.
On the reverse was a handwritten message.
One child was placed with Ryan. One child was placed with Vanessa. Neither child was supposed to know the other existed.
I looked up.
“Who wrote this?””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“Your father.””
I felt my knees weaken.
“Why would he separate them?””
“He thought it was the only way to keep them alive.””
I stared at the locket.
Then I noticed a small compartment hidden beneath the photograph.
Inside was a tiny key.
Vanessa watched me as I lifted it out.
“What's this for?””
She swallowed.
“Your father told me it opened the final file.””
“Where is it?””
“Inside the hospital archives.””
I looked at the documents on the desk.
“Then we're going to St. Agnes.””
Vanessa shook her head desperately.
“Ryan, you can't.””
“Why?””
“Because the person who controls those archives is the same person who has been watching our family for years.””
“Who?””
She looked directly at me.
“Thomas Reed.””
I stared at her.
“Thomas is in police custody.””
Vanessa went pale.
Then she whispered, “That isn't Thomas.””
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
Officer Daniels.
I answered immediately.
“Ryan, where are you?””
“At a storage facility with Vanessa.””
“Get away from her.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“We just received confirmation that Thomas Reed died three years ago.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was staring at the door.
Officer Daniels continued.
“The man we arrested at the warehouse has been identified as someone else. He was carrying Thomas's identification.””
My blood turned cold.
“Who is he?””
The officer hesitated.
Then he said, “A former hospital administrator named Philip Warren.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying silently.
“Ryan,” she whispered, “we need to leave.””
“Why?””
She pointed toward the door.
A shadow had appeared beneath it.
May you like
Someone was standing outside.
Then the handle began to turn.
