Chapter 1: The Scream That Changed Everything
“Don’t touch me!””
Serena tore the seam of her own royal-blue dress, stumbled backward against her father-in-law’s desk, and screamed as if an invisible monster had just reached for her throat.
The sound shattered the quiet of the mansion.
Three seconds later, Damon Blackwood burst into the study.
And in those three seconds, Serena made sure he saw exactly what she wanted him to see.
“Your father just tried to attack me!””
She threw herself into her husband’s arms, clutching his expensive shirt with trembling fingers. Tears streamed down her cheeks. Her shoulders shook violently, and she buried her face against his chest as though the room behind her held something too terrible to look at.
Damon looked at the torn dress.
Then at his wife’s pale face.
Finally, he looked at his seventy-two-year-old father standing beside the desk.
“Dad?”” Damon’s voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.
Calvin Blackwood stared at him in disbelief.
“What is she talking about?””
Serena let out another sob.
“He wouldn’t let me leave. I told him to stop, but he—”
“That’s enough!”” Damon roared.
Calvin barely had time to raise his hands before his son struck him across the face.
The sound of the blow echoed through the study.
Calvin stumbled sideways, caught the edge of the desk, and fell to the hardwood floor. His glasses flew off and slid beneath a leather armchair.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Damon stood over the man who had raised him alone after his mother died, his chest heaving with rage.
Serena clung to his arm.
“Damon, please,” she whispered.
“I’m frightened.””
Her words seemed to pour gasoline on the fire.
Damon pointed at his father.
“You're seventy-two years old! How could you do something like this to my wife?””
Calvin slowly pressed one hand against his cheek.
The skin was already reddening.
He looked up at his son, and something in his expression changed. The shock remained, but the hurt beneath it hardened into something colder.
“Check the security camera,” Calvin said.
Damon froze.
“What?””
“The camera above the doorway.”” Calvin struggled to his feet, refusing the hand his son had instinctively extended.
“Watch the footage before you make a mistake you can never undo.””
For the first time since Damon entered the room, Serena stopped crying.
It lasted less than a second.
But Calvin saw it.
So did Damon.
His gaze shifted toward the doorway.
A small black camera sat discreetly above the carved wooden frame. It had been installed six months earlier after a valuable antique disappeared from the study.
Damon had forgotten it was there.
Serena hadn't.
“Damon,” she whispered, tightening her grip on his arm.
“Please. We don't need to do this right now.””
He looked down at her.
“Why not?””
“Because your father is clearly upset. He'll say anything to protect himself.””
Calvin gave a humorless laugh.
“Interesting. You were terrified of me thirty seconds ago, but now you're worried about what I might say?””
Serena recoiled.
“Don't speak to me!””
“Stop it!”” Damon shouted at his father.
“Don't you dare frighten her again.””
Calvin stared at him.
Then he looked at the torn blue dress.
“Son, I have spent my entire life protecting you from people who wanted something from this family.”” His voice cracked slightly.
“I never imagined I would have to protect you from your own judgment.””
Damon's jaw tightened.
“You're not the victim here.””
“No,” Calvin replied.
“Apparently, I'm not even allowed to be a father anymore.””
Serena buried her face against Damon's shoulder again.
“Let's go,” she whispered.
“Please take me upstairs.””
Damon wrapped an arm around her, but his eyes remained fixed on the camera.
For the first time, doubt flickered across his face.
Only briefly.
Then he turned toward the study's security monitor, mounted inside a cabinet near the bookshelves.
“I'm checking it.””
Serena's fingers dug into his shirt.
“Damon, no.””
The words escaped too quickly.
Both men looked at her.
She swallowed.
“I mean… why humiliate everyone? If we review it, we'll have to watch what happened again. I can't bear that.””
Calvin leaned against the desk.
“Then you won't mind leaving the room while we do.””
Serena's eyes flashed.
“I am his wife.””
“And I am his father,” Calvin answered.
“Yet somehow, neither title seems to mean much in this room today.””
Damon moved toward the monitor.
“Enough. I'm watching the footage.””
He pressed a few buttons. The screen flickered, then displayed the study from the camera's high angle.
The timestamp showed 3:17 p.m.
Damon leaned forward.
Serena went utterly still.
On the screen, Calvin sat behind his desk, reviewing a thick stack of documents. Serena entered carrying a silver tray with two cups of tea.
Nothing seemed unusual.
Calvin looked up and said something the camera couldn't capture clearly.
Serena set down the tray.
Then she glanced toward the locked drawer on the right side of his desk.
Damon frowned.
“What is she looking at?””
Nobody answered.
Onscreen, Serena walked around the desk and stood beside Calvin. She appeared to ask him a question.
Calvin shook his head.
She asked again.
This time, he pointed toward the door.
Serena's face changed.
Even without sound, Damon could see the anger in her expression.
Then came the moment that made his stomach tighten.
Serena reached toward the locked drawer.
Calvin immediately stood and caught her wrist.
He released her almost at once, stepping away and pointing toward the door.
Serena looked down at her dress.
She glanced at the camera.
Then, with one quick movement, she gripped the fabric near her waist and ripped the seam herself.
Damon stopped breathing.
Onscreen, Serena deliberately stumbled backward into the desk.
Her mouth opened.
She screamed.
And the moment Damon entered the study, she transformed into the frightened woman now standing beside him.
The footage continued for another minute.
It showed Calvin falling after Damon struck him.
It showed Serena watching the old man on the floor.
And it showed something else.
While Damon knelt to help his father, Serena's eyes never left the locked drawer.
Not once.
The screen went black.
For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the faint hum of the computer.
Damon slowly turned toward his wife.
“Serena.””
She stepped backward.
“Damon, I can explain.””
He looked at the torn dress, then at the woman he had defended without hesitation.
“Explain what?””
Her lips trembled.
“I was scared.””
“Of what? My father touching your wrist?””
“He was hiding something!””
The admission burst out before she could stop it.
Calvin straightened.
Damon's eyes narrowed.
“What was he hiding?””
Serena's face drained of color.
She looked at the drawer again.
This time, neither man missed it.
Calvin followed her gaze and went completely still.
Then he turned toward his son.
“Damon,” he said quietly, “you need to understand something. She didn't come into my study to hurt me.””
He paused.
“She came to find something that belonged to your mother.””
And for the first time that afternoon, Damon saw genuine fear in his father's eyes.
May you like
Because his mother had been dead for twenty-three years.
And nobody in the Blackwood family had spoken about her final night since the funeral.
