Chapter 2: The Truth Behind Two Years
The ballroom looked different after Leo spoke.
The flowers Elena spent months choosing suddenly looked fake.
The candles glowing on every table felt like they belonged to someone else’s life.
My wedding wasn’t a celebration anymore.
It was a crime scene.
And the evidence was standing in front of me wearing a tiny suit.
“Daniel,” Elena whispered, grabbing my arm.
I pulled away.
Not aggressively.
Not dramatically.
But enough for her to understand something had changed.
“Did you know about these letters?””
Her lips parted.
“What? No.””
I studied her face.
I wanted to believe her.
I needed to.
But there was something I couldn’t ignore.
The fear.
Not confusion.
Not shock.
Fear.
Martha stepped forward.
“Everyone needs to calm down.””
I turned toward her.
“Calm down?””
My voice shook.
“My son just told me you hid letters from me.””
She lowered her voice.
“Not here.””
I laughed once.
A bitter laugh.
“Not here?””
I looked around the room.
“Where would you prefer? After the cake cutting?””
Nobody spoke.
My aunt covered her mouth.
My cousin Marcus stared at the floor.
Everyone knew something was wrong.
But nobody knew how deep it went.
Leo climbed down from the stage slowly.
I reached for him.
He hesitated.
That hesitation hurt worse than anything.
My own son was scared to come to me.
I knelt down.
“Come here, buddy.””
After a few seconds, he stepped forward.
I wrapped my arms around him.
He felt smaller than I remembered.
That thought almost broke me.
“How long have you wanted to tell me this?””
He buried his face against my shoulder.
“Since Mama kept asking why you never answered.””
My stomach dropped.
“Your mom called me?””
He nodded.
“A lot.””
The room disappeared.
All I could hear was my son.
“She cried after every mailbox trip.””
I closed my eyes.
Sarah.
The woman I spent years loving.
The woman I blamed.
The woman I convinced myself abandoned me.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Leo pulled back.
“Big Mama said you didn’t want to hear from us.””
I looked at Martha.
She looked away.
That tiny movement told me more than any confession could.
“Mom,” I said quietly.
She didn’t answer.
“Look at me.””
Slowly, she did.
And for the first time in my life, my mother looked like a stranger.
“Where are the letters?””
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Elena stepped closer.
“Daniel, this is insane. We don’t even know if a child’s memory is accurate.””
I looked at her.
“Why are you defending my mother?””
She froze.
“I’m not.””
“Then why are you trying to make me doubt my son?””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You’re letting emotions control you.””
Maybe she was right.
Maybe I was emotional.
Maybe seeing my son cry on my wedding day had broken something inside me.
But then I remembered her words.
After today, she don’t gotta stress about my mama no more.
I turned to Leo.
“Buddy, what exactly did you hear Elena say?””
He looked nervous.
“She said your money was supposed to stay in this family.””
Elena’s expression changed.
“What?””
“She said my mama always wanted something from you.””
A few guests gasped.
I looked at Elena.
The woman I was supposed to spend my life with.
The woman who held my hand while promising she loved everything about me.
But suddenly, I wondered if she loved me.
Or what came with me.
My house.
My business.
My bank account.
My last name.
Martha stepped between us.
“Daniel, you’re making a mistake.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I made a mistake two years ago.””
The room went silent.
I looked at my mother.
“I believed you.””
Her face softened.
For a second, I saw my mom again.
The person who raised me.
“Daniel, I did what I thought was best.””
Those words hurt more than if she had screamed.
“Best for who?””
She looked down.
I knew.
I already knew.
A waiter walked over nervously.
“Sir…”
Nobody paid attention.
He held out a small envelope.
“This was found under the stage.””
I frowned.
“An envelope?””
He nodded.
“It has your name on it.””
My hands went cold.
The handwriting on the front looked familiar.
A handwriting I hadn’t seen in years.
Sarah’s.
I stared at the envelope.
Everyone watched as I slowly opened it.
Inside was a single folded piece of paper.
May you like
The first line made my heart stop.
“Daniel, if you’re reading this, it means Martha finally couldn’t keep the truth from you anymore…”
