Chapter 8: The Second Will
I read my mother’s letter again.
This time, I wasn’t looking for answers.
I was looking for lies.
The difference mattered.
Because when you love someone, you search for reasons.
When you suspect someone, you search for evidence.
The letter had one sentence I ignored before.
I thought it was because I was emotional.
I wasn’t.
I ignored it because I didn’t want to believe it.
Emily,
The greatest danger is not the person who hates you.
It is the person who believes they are entitled to hurt you.
I read it ten times.
Then I understood.
My mother wasn’t only talking about Daniel.
She was talking about everyone.
Including herself.
Rebecca sat across from me.
Neither of us had spoken for an hour.
Finally, she said:
“You deserve the full truth.””
I looked up.
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“Your father was involved with Richard Morrow.””
“I know.””
“But he wasn’t the one who planned everything.””
“Who was?””
Rebecca looked at the letter.
“Your mother.””
The words hit like a physical blow.
“What?””
“She knew Richard was stealing from the company.””
“Yes.””
“She knew your father was helping him.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she expose them?””
I waited.
Rebecca answered quietly.
“Because she loved him.””
I looked away.
My mother.
The woman who taught me honesty.
The woman who told me never to accept lies.
Had protected the person who betrayed her.
“She forgave him?””
“No.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“She protected you.””
“From what?””
“From becoming part of their war.””
I closed my eyes.
For years, I thought my mother’s silence was weakness.
Maybe it was sacrifice.
Thomas entered the room holding a document.
“We found the original.””
My heart stopped.
“The will?””
He nodded.
“Daniel made a mistake.””
“What?””
“He thought your mother’s second will was only about inheritance.””
“What was it really about?””
Thomas placed the document down.
“It was evidence.””
I opened it.
The first pages were legal instructions.
Asset distribution.
Company ownership.
Nothing unusual.
Then I reached the final pages.
A handwritten statement.
My mother’s words.
If Daniel Morrow has found this document, then he has already learned enough about his father’s mistakes to repeat them.
My hands shook.
She knew his name.
She knew.
I kept reading.
Daniel is not responsible for the choices of his father.
But he is responsible for the choices he makes after learning the truth.
I looked up.
“She knew he might come.””
Rebecca nodded.
“She prepared for it.””
The final paragraph was short.
But it changed everything.
Emily,
If Daniel comes into your life, do not judge him by his family name.
Judge him by what he does when given the choice between revenge and redemption.
I stopped.
Because suddenly I remembered something.
Daniel had opportunities to destroy me.
Many.
But he hadn’t.
Not completely.
The fake documents.
The threats.
The stolen will.
They were terrible.
But if he wanted everything immediately…
Why leave clues?
Why let me find the camera?
Why show me the truth?
Thomas interrupted my thoughts.
“Emily.””
I looked up.
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
He placed another document on the table.
A transfer agreement.
But not mine.
Daniel’s.
My eyes moved down.
The signature belonged to Daniel Morrow.
The date was two years earlier.
“What is this?””
Rebecca read it.
Then whispered:
“He transferred his inheritance rights away.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Thomas nodded.
“Daniel gave up his claim to his father’s estate.””
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was becoming obvious.
He wasn’t trying to steal from me.
He was trying to uncover something.
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
Neither of us spoke for several seconds.
Finally:
“You found it.””
“Yes.””
“Did you read the last page?””
“Yes.””
Silence.
Then his voice changed.
Less confident.
More tired.
“Your mother knew.””
“About everything?””
“No.””
A pause.
“About me.””
I tightened my grip.
“Why did you marry me?””
This time, there was no anger in his voice.
Only exhaustion.
“Because I was supposed to destroy your family.””
My breath caught.
“And?””
Another pause.
“And then I fell in love with the person I was supposed to hurt.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain didn’t disappear.
The betrayal didn’t vanish.
But something shifted.
“Where are you?””
Daniel exhaled.
“Meeting the person who started all of this.””
“Who?””
His answer came quietly.
“Your father.””
The call ended.
And immediately another message arrived.
A photo.
Daniel and my father standing together.
