Chapter 9: The Last Piece of the Puzzle
The next forty-eight hours changed everything.
Again.
I was starting to hate that phrase.
Changed everything.
People said it like transformation was always beautiful.
Sometimes it wasn't.
Sometimes your entire world shifted because another person had hidden something from you.
Aaron called me before sunrise.
"Sarah, come to the office.""
I was already awake.
I hadn't slept.
Not after Mark's confession.
Not after the claim.
Not after realizing my father had left me a fortune and a battlefield.
When I arrived, Aaron had documents spread across the table.
"Tell me.""
He pointed to the papers.
"The company filing the claim is called Whitmore Holdings.""
My heart stopped.
"Whitmore?""
"My father's name.""
Aaron nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then how can they challenge me?""
He turned a document around.
"Because they claim they own the majority rights.""
I read the page.
My hands went cold.
"That's impossible.""
"I thought so too.""
"Then?""
Aaron opened another file.
"This is where things become complicated.""
He pulled out a photograph.
A man standing beside my father.
I stared at it.
I recognized him.
My father's business partner.
Richard Vale.
"I remember him.""
Aaron nodded.
"Richard was your father's closest partner.""
"Was?""
"Until he betrayed him.""
The word hung in the air.
"How?""
"Your father discovered Richard had been transferring company assets into private accounts.""
I looked at the documents.
"So he stole from him.""
"Yes.""
"Then why does he have a claim?""
Aaron looked at me.
"Because Richard had help.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who?""
Aaron didn't answer immediately.
He didn't need to.
I already knew.
"No.""
Aaron quietly said:
"Yes.""
I looked at the document again.
A signature.
A familiar signature.
Mark Carter.
The room spun.
"No.""
Aaron watched me carefully.
"Sarah—"
"No.""
I pushed the paper away.
"Mark signed something with Richard?""
"Years ago.""
"Before we were married?""
Aaron nodded.
I closed my eyes.
Another secret.
Another thing hidden.
Another piece of my life that existed without my knowledge.
"Why?""
Aaron opened the agreement.
"Because Richard promised him money.""
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was too predictable.
"Of course.""
I walked to the window.
Everything connected.
The debt.
The marriage.
The trust.
The property.
The lies.
Mark wasn't just careless.
He had been trying to escape the consequences of his choices for years.
And I had been the place he landed.
Aaron spoke softly.
"There is something you need to know.""
I didn't turn.
"What?""
"Mark didn't know about your father's full plan.""
I looked back.
"What do you mean?""
"He thought he was helping Richard gain access to property connected to the company.""
"But he wasn't.""
"No.""
Aaron shook his head.
"He was unknowingly helping Richard target your inheritance.""
I sat down.
The anger was still there.
But something else appeared.
A strange kind of sadness.
Because suddenly Mark wasn't the mastermind.
He was still guilty.
Still responsible.
But he was also someone else's tool.
My phone rang.
Denise.
I stared at the screen.
Then answered.
"What?""
Her voice was shaking.
"Sarah, I need your help.""
I almost hung up.
Then she said:
"Richard Vale came to see me.""
I went still.
"Why?""
"Because he wanted something.""
"What?""
A pause.
Then:
"He wanted me to convince Mark to give up.""
I frowned.
"Give up what?""
Her voice became quieter.
"The property.""
I looked at Aaron.
"Why would Richard need Mark if he already filed a claim?""
Another silence.
Then Denise whispered:
"Because Mark isn't the only person who signed that agreement.""
My blood ran cold.
"What are you saying?""
"I found another signature.""
"Whose?""
Her answer barely came through.
"Your mother's.""
The room went silent.
My mother.
A woman who had been gone even longer than my father.
Another name.
Another secret.
Another person who had known.
I looked at Aaron.
He was already opening another file.
"Sarah.""
His voice was serious.
"Your family wasn't hiding one secret.""
He placed the document in front of me.
"They were hiding a war.""
I stared at my mother's signature.
And beneath it was one final sentence.
May you like
A sentence that made my entire body go cold.
*If Sarah ever discovers the truth, the agreement must be destroyed before she learns who she really is.*
