Chapter 6: The Woman at the Door

I knew who she was before Mateo opened the door.

Some people enter a room before they physically arrive.

Camila had been everywhere.

In his family’s expectations.

In the hidden agreement.

In the photo on my phone.

In the silence between my husband’s answers.

And now she stood in front of me.

She was beautiful.

That was the first thing I hated about noticing.

Not because beauty meant anything.

But because my mind had prepared me to see a villain.

Instead, I saw a woman with tired eyes and a nervous expression.

A person.

A real person.

That made everything harder.

“Camila,” Mateo said.

She looked at him.

Then at me.

“Valeria.””

I didn’t invite her inside.

Neither did Mateo.

The three of us stood in the doorway like a scene nobody wanted to be part of.

“You shouldn’t be here,” Mateo said.

“I know.””

“Then why did you come?””

She swallowed.

“Because you’re about to lose everything because of a lie.””

I almost laughed.

“A lie?””

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

I crossed my arms.

“Which one?””

Camila looked uncomfortable.

“The one where everyone thinks I was the person who destroyed your marriage.””

Mateo’s expression hardened.

“Camila.””

“No. You don’t get to do this anymore.””

Her voice cracked.

“You all protected the same story for years.””

Nobody spoke.

She continued.

“Your parents told everyone I left because I was selfish.””

Mateo looked away.

“Wasn’t that true?””

Camila shook her head.

“No.””

The silence became heavier.

She looked at me.

“Can I come inside?””

I wanted to say no.

I should have said no.

But curiosity is stronger than anger sometimes.

I stepped aside.

We sat in the living room.

The same room where his family had judged me days earlier.

Camila looked around.

“This is the house.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“The house everyone wanted me to live in.””

Mateo closed his eyes.

“Stop.””

“No, Mateo. She deserves to know.””

I looked between them.

“Know what?””

Camila took a breath.

“Your family didn’t just want me because they liked me.””

I waited.

“They wanted my family’s money.””

The words landed.

“My parents invested in Cárdenas Montajes,” she explained.

“They believed marriage would connect our families permanently.””

I looked at Mateo.

“So the agreement…”

“Yes,” Camila said.

“It started because of me.””

Mateo stood.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Camila looked at him.

“You were too afraid to tell her.””

He said nothing.

And that was answer enough.

She continued.

“The night before your wedding, I met Mateo.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to stop it.””

Mateo looked at her.

“I thought you came to change my mind.””

“I came to tell you the truth.””

Camila’s eyes filled with frustration.

“Your father had already prepared documents. Your mother had already told everyone we would eventually get back together.””

I whispered:

“And you?””

“I told Mateo I didn’t want that life.””

Mateo looked surprised.

I noticed.

“You didn’t know?””

He shook his head.

Camila laughed sadly.

“Of course he didn’t.””

She looked at me.

“Mateo always believed he was choosing between two women.””

Her voice lowered.

“But the truth was, he was choosing whether to live his own life or the one his family wrote for him.””

Nobody spoke.

Then I asked:

“What happened after you met?””

Camila looked at Mateo.

“That’s the part he never told you.””

Mateo looked terrified.

I turned toward him.

“What didn’t you tell me?””

Camila answered.

“He didn’t just kiss me.””

My entire body went still.

Mateo whispered:

“Camila.””

She shook her head.

“You asked for honesty.””

I looked at my husband.

“Then tell me.””

His silence was unbearable.

Finally, he said:

“She’s right.””

I felt like the room tilted.

“It happened once.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice broke.

“I kissed her because I was confused. Because my family had spent years telling me what my life should look like. Because I was scared.””

I stared.

“And then?””

“Then I left.””

“Did you come home and tell me?””

“No.””

The honesty was painful.

“But I knew I loved you.””

I looked at him.

“Love without honesty is just another way of keeping someone trapped.””

He looked like I had slapped him.

Camila stood.

“I didn’t come here to destroy your marriage.””

“Then why?””

She reached into her bag.

She placed an envelope on the table.

“Because this is what your father gave Mateo after that meeting.””

Mateo picked it up.

He opened it.

His face changed.

“What is this?””

Camila looked at him.

“The document proving your father never planned for you to own the house.””

I looked at the papers.

Another agreement.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life hidden from me.

Mateo read silently.

Then he whispered:

“No.””

I took the document.

At the bottom was a signature.

Not Mateo’s.

Not Ernesto’s.

Someone else’s.

A witness.

A person who had been there from the beginning.

And beside the signature was a name that made Mateo step backward.

“Impossible.””

I looked at him.

“Who is it?””

May you like

His voice was barely audible.

“My grandfather.””
