Chapter 7: The Room That Wasn’t There

Nobody spoke while the footsteps came closer.

One.

Two.

Three.

The sound moved slowly down the stairs.

Not rushing.

Not hiding.

Almost like whoever was walking wanted us to know they were coming.

Lily squeezed my hand so tightly her fingers hurt.

I pulled her behind me.

Vanessa stood frozen beside the kitchen table.

Her eyes were locked on the staircase.

“Ryan…”

I whispered:

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I almost snapped.

But then I stopped.

Because this time, I believed her.

For the first time since this nightmare began, Vanessa wasn’t hiding something.

She was terrified.

The footsteps stopped.

Right at the bottom of the stairs.

The darkness beyond the kitchen doorway was empty.

But we could feel someone there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then a small voice whispered:

“Vanessa?””

My wife covered her mouth.

I saw tears run down her face.

“Chloe…”

Emma suddenly stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

The little girl was staring into the darkness.

“No, that’s not her.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What do you mean?””

Emma shook her head.

“She doesn’t sound like that anymore.””

The voice from the darkness giggled.

A child’s laugh.

But Emma backed away.

“Don’t listen.””

The voice spoke again.

“Emma.””

The little girl froze.

“You remember me.””

Emma’s breathing became uneven.

“No.””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“You forgot.””

Emma covered her ears.

“I didn’t forget.””

“You did.””

The voice became softer.

“You forgot because she wanted you to.””

Emma looked at Vanessa.

“What is she talking about?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

I turned to her.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes stayed on Emma.

“After Chloe disappeared…”

She swallowed.

“Something happened to Emma.””

“What?””

“She was found three days later.””

I frowned.

“Found where?””

“In the woods behind the house.””

Emma looked confused.

“I was?””

Vanessa nodded.

“You were unconscious.””

I looked at the little girl.

“But Emma remembers being in the wall.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“Because she was.””

Silence.

I stared at her.

“What?””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

“When Rachel found Chloe, she found Emma too.””

“But Emma was younger.””

“Yes.””

“She was already trapped?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I don’t understand.””

Vanessa looked toward the darkness.

“Neither did Rachel.””

The voice upstairs laughed again.

Except it wasn’t upstairs anymore.

It came from the hallway.

Closer.

“Tell him.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Tell him what?””

The voice whispered:

“What you did.””

My wife went still.

I looked at her.

“What did you do?””

She didn’t respond.

“Vanessa.””

The silence stretched.

Then she said:

“I opened the first door.””

The words changed the air.

Not because I understood.

Because I didn’t.

“What first door?””

“When I was eight.””

She looked at me.

“Before Chloe disappeared.””

Emma stepped back.

“You opened it?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I didn’t know what it was.””

Her voice shook.

“I thought it was just a hiding place.””

She looked at the stairs.

“The house had been abandoned for years before Rachel moved in. There were rumors about secret rooms. Places built during the war.””

I listened.

“She found the first passage when she renovated the upstairs.””

“And you?””

“I followed Chloe inside.””

My stomach tightened.

“You and Chloe went into the wall together?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked down.

“At first, nothing.””

A pause.

“We thought it was funny.””

She almost smiled.

A painful, distant smile.

“We were children. We thought we had found a secret castle.””

Then her expression changed.

“Until we found the second door.””

The kitchen suddenly felt colder.

“What was behind it?””

Vanessa whispered:

“A room.””

I waited.

“Just a room?””

She nodded.

“But it shouldn’t have existed.””

“Why?””

“Because it was bigger than the space inside the house allowed.””

I looked around.

The old house.

The hidden passages.

The impossible doors.

“What was inside?””

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward Emma.

“Names.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Names carved into the walls.””

She hugged herself.

“Hundreds of them.””

The voice in the hallway whispered:

“Liar.””

Vanessa looked up.

The darkness shifted.

“You didn’t tell him the important part.””

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“What important part?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The voice did.

“She chose.””

The words were quiet.

But they destroyed Vanessa.

“No.””

The voice repeated:

“She chose.””

Emma looked between us.

“What did you choose?””

Vanessa started crying.

“I was eight.””

The voice laughed.

“You were old enough.””

I stepped between Vanessa and the hallway.

“Show yourself.””

The voice ignored me.

“You promised me.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I tried.””

“No.””

The voice became angry.

“You ran.””

The temperature seemed to drop.

The kitchen lights flickered.

And then something happened that made my entire body freeze.

A small hand appeared around the corner of the hallway.

Not a shadow.

Not a reflection.

A real hand.

A child’s hand.

Then a little girl stepped forward.

She looked about eight years old.

Her hair was dark.

Her dress was old.

Her skin was pale.

But the thing that terrified me wasn’t how she looked.

It was Vanessa’s reaction.

My wife looked at her like she was seeing her childhood again.

“Chloe.””

The girl smiled.

“You remember me.””

Emma gasped.

“No.””

Chloe looked at her.

“You remember.””

Emma shook her head.

“You’re not real.””

Chloe tilted her head.

“Neither are you.””

The words hit Emma like a physical blow.

The girl stepped closer.

“You don’t remember what happened.””

I moved in front of Emma.

“Stay away from her.””

Chloe looked at me.

Then smiled.

“You’re Ryan.””

I felt cold.

“How do you know my name?””

She ignored the question.

“She told you about me?””

I looked at Vanessa.

“No.””

Chloe smiled wider.

“She never tells anyone everything.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Stop.””

Chloe looked at her.

“Why?””

A pause.

“Are you afraid he’ll know you left us?””

My jaw tightened.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What does she mean?””

Vanessa’s face crumbled.

“I didn’t leave.””

Chloe laughed.

“You did.””

The house creaked.

The walls seemed to shift.

And suddenly I understood something.

The house wasn’t just hiding rooms.

It was hiding memories.

And Vanessa was trapped inside the worst one.

“Tell him,” Chloe whispered.

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Tell him why Emma is here.””

“No.””

“Tell him why Lily could hear me.””

Vanessa covered her ears.

“Stop.””

Chloe stepped closer.

“Tell him why you brought your daughter here.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

I turned to Vanessa.

“What is she talking about?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Regret.

“Ryan…”

My voice was barely there.

“Why did you bring us here?””

She opened her mouth.

No words came.

Then Chloe answered.

“Because she thought she could fix what she broke.””

Silence.

I stared at Vanessa.

“Is that true?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I didn’t know.””

The words sounded broken.

“I didn’t know the house would remember.””

Chloe smiled.

“You always come back.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

The lights flickered.

Chloe pointed toward the ceiling.

“Just like before.””

A loud crack echoed from upstairs.

Then another.

The house groaned.

Not like an old building.

Like something waking up.

Emma grabbed my sleeve.

“Daddy.””

I looked down.

Her face was pale.

“The third door opened.””

My stomach dropped.

“What third door?””

She pointed upward.

At the ceiling.

At the space above us.

A place where there had never been a room.

Then came a sound.

A door unlocking.

Above our heads.

And from somewhere inside the hidden space above the kitchen…

A child whispered:

“Vanessa.””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“We’ve been waiting for you.””
