Chapter 8: The Second Door

The sound woke everyone.

Scratch.

Scratch.

Scratch.

Lily stood at the top of the stairs, holding her blanket.

“Daddy?””

I ran to her.

“Stay with Mommy.””

She looked scared.

“But my friend is crying.””

The words made me freeze.

“Your friend?””

She nodded.

“The other one.””

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Ryan.””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Don’t.””

But I was done running from walls.

Done running from secrets.

I walked toward Lily’s room.

Daniel followed.

“Wait.””

I looked back.

“What?””

His face was pale.

“That door wasn’t supposed to open.””

“What door?””

He pointed.

Behind Lily’s closet.

Another wooden panel.

A panel I had never noticed.

My stomach dropped.

There had always been another one.

We opened it carefully.

Behind it was another narrow passage.

But unlike Anna’s hiding place…

this one was bigger.

Older.

The walls were covered with children’s drawings.

Hundreds of them.

My flashlight moved across the pages.

Families.

Houses.

People.

And one drawing stopped me.

A little boy.

A little girl.

And a man standing behind them.

The boy had my birthmark.

The girl had Anna’s.

Underneath the drawing were four words.

*We were never alone.*

Emily started crying.

“I didn’t know about this room.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew enough.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Then a voice came from inside.

A child’s voice.

“Is Daddy there?””

Everyone froze.

Not Anna.

Not Lily.

Another child.

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

A small figure moved in the darkness.

A boy.

Maybe eight years old.

He looked at me.

And smiled.

“You came back.””

My heart pounded.

“Who are you?””

He touched his neck.

A birthmark.

The same shape.

The same place.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked horrified.

“No.””

The boy walked into the light.

“I knew you would find me eventually.””

My voice barely worked.

“Daniel…”

He whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

The boy smiled.

“My name is Noah.””

Then he looked at me.

“And I’m your son.””

Nobody spoke.

The silence was unbearable.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another impossible truth.

Emily covered her mouth.

Victor’s voice echoed from behind us.

“You finally understand.””

We turned.

He was standing at the end of the hallway.

Smiling.

“You thought Anna was the secret.””

I stepped in front of the children.

“What did you do?””

Victor looked almost proud.

“I preserved the family.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You destroyed it.””

His expression hardened.

“You don’t understand what you are.””

“I’m a father.””

“No.””

He pointed at me.

“You are the last piece.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked terrified.

“Ryan…”

Victor smiled.

“The reason your memories were taken wasn’t because of Anna.””

The lights flickered.

“The reason was because of all of them.””

My chest tightened.

“All of who?””

Victor opened a folder.

Inside were photographs.

Children.

Dozens of children.

All with the same birthmark.

My birthmark.

My hands went cold.

“No…”

Victor whispered:

“Your bloodline created more heirs than you know.””

Behind him, the basement door slammed shut.

And from somewhere inside the walls…

more children started calling my name.

“Daddy…”

“Daddy…”

“Daddy…”

I looked at the endless darkness around me.

And realized the truth.

The girl behind the wall was never the mystery.

She was only the beginning.
