Chapter 6: The Room Beneath The House
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
But by then, the person who threw the rock was gone.
No footprints.
No fingerprints.
No explanation.
Just another unanswered question.
The officer standing in my bedroom looked at the hidden passage and frowned.
“Mr. Carter, you’re telling me you found a child living in here?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t know?””
I looked at Emily.
She looked away.
That answer told him everything.
The officer noticed.
“Mrs. Carter?””
Emily said nothing.
I felt something inside me breaking.
Because every person in that room knew more than I did.
Everyone except me.
The officer eventually left after making a report.
But he promised to return the next morning with investigators.
He didn’t understand.
This wasn’t just about a hidden child.
This was about my entire life being hidden from me.
That night, nobody slept.
Anna stayed in Lily’s room.
The two girls sat on the floor together, coloring.
It should have looked sweet.
Instead, it felt heartbreaking.
Two children connected by secrets they never asked for.
I stood in the doorway.
Anna looked up.
“Are you angry with me?””
The question caught me off guard.
I walked in.
“No.””
“But I ruined your family.””
My chest tightened.
“You didn’t ruin anything.””
She looked down.
“Daddy said people always leave.””
I sat beside her.
“Who is your daddy?””
She became quiet.
Then whispered:
“Not Daniel.””
I froze.
“What?””
She looked toward the hallway.
“The man who took care of me.””
A terrible feeling entered my stomach.
“What man?””
She hugged her rabbit.
“He said he was protecting me.””
“Protecting you from what?””
She whispered:
“From you.””
I found Emily in the basement.
She was standing in front of an old wooden door.
A door I had never seen before.
“What’s behind there?””
She jumped.
“Ryan.””
“What’s behind the door?””
She stared at it.
“Your grandmother sealed this room.””
I walked closer.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because of what happened here.””
I grabbed the handle.
It was locked.
“Emily.””
She started crying.
“Ryan, please.””
I looked at her.
“No more secrets.””
After a long pause, she reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small key.
My heart sank.
“You had the key?””
She nodded.
“I was supposed to destroy it.””
I unlocked the door.
The smell hit me first.
Old paper.
Dust.
Something metallic.
Inside was a small room filled with boxes.
Photographs.
Documents.
And dozens of handwritten notes.
I picked one up.
The handwriting belonged to my father.
My hands trembled.
*Subject: The Carter Bloodline*
I looked at Emily.
“What is this?””
She whispered:
“The reason your family built this house.””
I opened another file.
Inside was a birth certificate.
A child’s name was written across the top.
Anna Carter.
My eyes widened.
“That’s impossible.””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“That’s why Daniel came back.””
We spent hours going through the documents.
The truth came together piece by piece.
My father had created a secret network of hidden rooms throughout the house.
He believed certain family members had to be protected.
Controlled.
Owned.
Anna wasn’t hidden because she was dangerous.
She was hidden because someone wanted control over her.
But one question remained.
Who?
Then I found the final document.
A medical record.
My name was on it.
I stared.
“What is this?””
Emily went pale.
“Ryan…”
I opened it.
The date was from twenty years ago.
Before I met Emily.
Before I knew anything.
The record showed a DNA test.
My name.
Daniel’s name.
And another name.
A name I recognized immediately.
I whispered:
“No.””
Emily covered her mouth.
“What?””
I looked at her.
“The test says Daniel…”
My voice broke.
“…is not my brother.””
Silence.
Then the basement light flickered.
Once.
Twice.
A voice came from behind us.
“You finally found out.””
We turned.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
His face was full of pain.
And behind him was another figure.
A man holding a photograph.
A man wearing a silver ring with a black stone.
Daniel whispered:
“Ryan…”
May you like
The man smiled.
“You always were the easiest one to fool.””
