Chapter 9: The Woman Behind the Purple Circle

I didn’t know who Victoria Vale was.

But I knew one thing.

Everyone became quiet when her name was spoken.

Even Vincent Kane.

That scared me more than the guards.

More than the threats.

More than the person outside our apartment.

Because Vincent was the person everyone else feared.

And now he was looking at a piece of paper like it had opened a door he didn’t want to walk through.

Mom stared at the message.

“Bring the girl.””

Her voice shook.

“No.””

Vincent looked at her.

“Emily.””

“No.””

She stepped in front of me.

“You are not taking my daughter anywhere.””

Nobody argued.

Not Marcus.

Not Thomas.

Not even Vincent.

Because Mom wasn’t scared anymore.

She was a mother.

And mothers are different when someone threatens their children.

Vincent slowly nodded.

“I understand.””

Mom looked surprised.

“You do?””

“Yes.””

He glanced at me.

“I would do the same.””

That changed something.

Mom lowered her shoulders slightly.

“Then why would she send this?””

Vincent looked at the purple ink.

“Because she knows something.””

“About my father?””

“Yes.””

“And David?””

“Yes.””

Mom looked at the photograph.

“Then why not just tell us?””

Thomas answered quietly.

“Because people like Victoria Vale don’t give information.””

Everyone looked at him.

“They trade it.””

Vincent picked up the note.

“Where was this found?””

Marcus answered.

“Attached to the second piece.””

Vincent looked at him.

“And where is the second piece?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Not here.””

Mom frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“Someone delivered a location.””

Vincent looked at the note.

“She wants us to go somewhere.””

Thomas shook his head.

“That’s exactly what she wants.””

Vincent looked at him.

“Explain.””

Thomas took a breath.

“Victoria never does anything without a reason.””

“Meaning?””

“Meaning if she wants Rory there…”

He looked at me.

“It’s because Rory is part of the reason.””

The room became silent.

Mom grabbed my hand.

“No.””

Thomas looked guilty.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“She was a baby.””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the truth.

I was four.

I didn’t know anything about missing ledgers.

I didn’t know about hidden money.

I didn’t know about dangerous people.

I only knew Mom cried.

And I wanted her to stop.

Vincent looked at the photograph again.

Then he made a decision.

“We go.””

Mom immediately turned.

“What?””

“We go.””

“No.””

“Emily.””

“You just said you understood.””

“I do.””

“Then how can you take her there?””

Vincent looked at me.

“Because if Victoria Vale wanted to hurt Rory, she wouldn’t have sent a message.””

Mom frowned.

“What?””

“She would have acted already.””

Silence.

Vincent continued.

“This is not an attack.””

“Then what is it?””

“A meeting.””

Thomas shook his head.

“A meeting with Victoria Vale is never just a meeting.””

Vincent looked at him.

“Do you know where?””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Where?””

Thomas stared at the purple symbol.

“The old Carter Foundation building.””

Mom went completely still.

“What?””

Thomas looked at her.

“Your father’s building.””

Her face changed.

“I thought it was sold.””

“It was.””

“Then why there?””

Thomas looked away.

“Because Victoria bought it.””

Two hours later, we arrived downtown.

The building was old.

Not broken.

Just forgotten.

A tall stone building between newer glass towers.

The sign above the entrance was faded.

CARTER FOUNDATION.

I looked at Mom.

“You know this place?””

She nodded.

“My father built it.””

“For what?””

She smiled sadly.

“He wanted to help people.””

Vincent looked at the building.

“And someone turned it into a hiding place.””

Nobody answered.

Inside, the building was empty.

No employees.

No visitors.

Only silence.

Marcus checked every corner.

“Clear.””

Vincent nodded.

Then a woman’s voice came from the hallway.

“You brought her.””

Everyone stopped.

A woman stepped into the light.

She was older.

Elegant.

Calm.

She wore a dark suit.

And around her neck was the purple circle necklace from the photograph.

Victoria Vale.

She looked at me.

Not Vincent.

Not Mom.

Me.

“You look like your father.””

Mom stepped forward.

“Stay away from her.””

Victoria looked at her.

“Emily Carter.””

Mom’s expression hardened.

“You know my name.””

“I knew your father.””

“You ruined his life.””

Victoria didn’t react.

“That is what you believe.””

Mom stared.

“Where is he?””

A pause.

Then Victoria looked away.

“I wondered when you would finally ask.””

My heart beat faster.

Mom had waited years for that answer.

“Where is Daniel Carter?””

Victoria looked at Vincent.

“You brought the right person.””

Vincent’s voice was cold.

“Answer her.””

Victoria smiled slightly.

“Still protecting people, Vincent?””

Nobody moved.

Vincent’s eyes narrowed.

“You know me.””

“Everyone knows you.””

“No.””

His voice changed.

“Not everyone.””

Victoria looked amused.

“You think you are different from David?””

Mom looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria ignored her.

She looked at Vincent.

“You and I both know power creates enemies.””

Vincent stepped forward.

“I’m not here to discuss me.””

“No.””

Victoria looked at me.

“You’re here because of her.””

Mom moved closer.

“Why?””

Victoria looked at the purple circle necklace.

“Because her father left something behind.””

“What?””

“The truth.””

Mom shook her head.

“What truth?””

Victoria walked to a table.

On it was an old box.

She opened it.

Inside was a single page.

The missing page.

The second piece.

Everyone stared.

Thomas whispered:

“The original ledger.””

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.””

Vincent stepped forward.

“Give it to me.””

She smiled.

“No.””

The room became tense.

“Why?””

“Because you still don’t understand.””

Vincent stared.

“Understand what?””

Victoria picked up the page.

“David Sterling was never the beginning.””

Mom looked at her.

“Then what was he?””

“A symptom.””

Silence.

“He was greedy.””

Victoria looked at the names.

“But greed is easy to control.””

Vincent’s eyes narrowed.

“Who controlled him?””

Victoria looked at Mom.

“Your father found out.””

Mom’s breathing changed.

“What?””

“Daniel Carter discovered the entire network.””

She looked at the ledger.

“Not just unpaid wages.””

She tapped the page.

“Fraud.””

“Money laundering.””

“Fake companies.””

“People who built fortunes by stealing from people who trusted them.””

Mom whispered:

“My father tried to expose them.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did he disappear?””

Victoria was quiet.

For the first time, she looked less powerful.

More human.

“Because he trusted the wrong person.””

Mom froze.

“Who?””

Victoria looked at the page.

Then at her.

“Someone close to him.””

The answer landed like a stone.

Vincent stepped closer.

“Name.””

Victoria didn’t answer.

Instead, she handed the page to Mom.

“Read the bottom.””

Mom looked.

Her hands began shaking.

“What is it?””

Vincent asked.

Mom couldn’t speak.

So Victoria answered.

“The signature.””

Everyone looked.

At the bottom of the page was a name.

A name written in ink.

A name that made Mom step back.

Because it wasn’t David Sterling.

It wasn’t Victoria Vale.

It wasn’t some stranger.

It was someone whose name had been in her life since she was a child.

Mom whispered:

“No.””

Vincent looked at her.

“Who?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“My uncle.””

Nobody spoke.

Victoria nodded.

“Your father trusted his own brother.””

Mom stared at the signature.

“Michael Carter.””

The room went silent.

Then Vincent’s phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his face changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Say that again.””

A pause.

“Where?””

Mom looked worried.

“What happened?””

Vincent ended the call.

Then he looked at Victoria.

“You knew.””

Victoria didn’t answer.

Vincent’s voice became colder.

“Tell me why my security team just found David Sterling’s car outside this building.””

Everyone froze.

Mom looked toward the entrance.

“David is here?””

Victoria’s expression changed for the first time.

Fear.

Real fear.

She whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Vincent stared.

“Why?””

Victoria looked at the missing page.

Then at me.

“Because David Sterling isn’t supposed to be alive.””

May you like

And from somewhere inside the old building…

a door slowly opened.
