Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Lie

The screenshot was only three lines long.

Three lines that changed the way I saw my entire family.

*Vanessa: Make sure she loses the spotlight. Mia: I don’t know if I can do this. Vanessa: You already started. Don’t get scared now.*

I read it once.

Then again.

Then a third time, hoping my eyes were making it worse than it was.

They weren’t.

My hands shook as I held the phone.

Dad noticed immediately.

“What is it?””

I couldn’t answer.

Not because I didn’t know what to say.

Because I didn’t know how to say it without breaking something that had already been cracked for years.

I handed him the phone.

He read the messages.

His expression didn’t change.

That scared me more than anger would have.

“David?”” Vanessa said from across the room.

She had seen the phone in his hand.

She knew.

For the first time since I had known her, Vanessa looked nervous.

Dad slowly turned toward her.

“Explain.””

She crossed her arms.

“It’s not what you think.””

I almost laughed.

That sentence.

The sentence people said when it was exactly what everyone thought.

“Then what is it?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“I understand perfectly.””

“You’re emotional.””

“I’m emotional because my sister destroyed my dress, tried to ruin my graduation, and now I find out you helped her.””

Her face hardened.

“I was trying to help her.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Dad stared at her.

“You helped her hurt Aaliyah?””

“I helped her stop feeling invisible.””

I felt something cold move through me.

“That’s your excuse?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Mia has spent her whole life feeling like she was second.””

I shook my head.

“And your solution was to make me lose?””

Nobody spoke.

The silence answered for them.

Dad sat down.

Slowly.

Like his body had suddenly become heavier.

“How long?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

“How long have you been doing this?””

“David…”

“How long?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You want to know the truth?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“Since the beginning.””

My stomach dropped.

The beginning.

She didn’t mean yesterday.

She meant years.

“Mia was struggling after her mother died,” Vanessa said.

“She needed someone.””

I stared at her.

“My mother died too.””

“Yes.””

The way she said it made me feel like my pain was somehow less important.

“You had memories,” Vanessa continued.

“You had David’s attention. Everyone wanted to protect you.””

“And Mia?””

Vanessa sighed.

“She needed to feel special.””

Dad stood.

“So you taught her that Aaliyah had to feel smaller.””

“That is not what I did.””

“It is exactly what you did.””

Vanessa’s voice rose.

“I watched you spend years praising Aaliyah. Her grades. Her discipline.

Her achievements. Everyone acted like she was some perfect daughter.””

Dad looked at me.

Then back at Vanessa.

“She worked for those things.””

“I know.””

“Then why punish her?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was the moment I realized something.

Mia’s jealousy had grown in a house where someone fed it.

Someone watered it.

Someone whispered into her ear that my happiness was stealing hers.

Dad walked upstairs.

A few minutes later, he came back carrying a small wooden box.

I recognized it.

It belonged to my mother.

He placed it on the table.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What are you doing?””

“Showing Aaliyah something.””

Dad opened the box.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

Small memories I had never seen.

My mother holding me as a baby.

My father smiling beside her.

Then he pulled out a photograph of Mia.

A little girl sitting on my mother’s lap.

I stared.

“I thought she didn’t remember Mom.””

Dad touched the picture.

“She doesn’t remember much.””

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“But your mother loved her too.””

I looked at Mia’s picture.

For years, I had thought Mia hated me because I had something she didn’t.

My mother’s memories.

But maybe the truth was more complicated.

Maybe she hated me because she thought I had something she deserved.

Dad closed the box.

“Mia needs consequences.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She’s your daughter.””

Dad looked at her.

“So is Aaliyah.””

That night, Mia came into my room.

I was sitting on the floor beside the box of my ruined dress.

She stood in the doorway.

“I didn’t know she was going to show you those messages.””

I looked up.

“You knew?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“How long?””

“A few months.””

My chest tightened.

“A few months?””

She nodded.

“I was angry.””

“That doesn’t explain everything.””

“No.””

She sat on the edge of my bed.

For the first time in years, she looked younger than me.

“I hated how everyone looked at you.””

I swallowed.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No, Mia.””

I stood.

“You hated yourself.””

She looked at me.

And I knew I had hit the truth.

“You wanted someone else to blame.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You think you’re better than me.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I think I’m tired of being the person you hurt whenever you’re unhappy.””

She wiped her face.

“I’m sorry.””

The words were quiet.

Almost impossible to hear.

But they were the first real apology she had ever given me.

I wanted to accept it.

I wanted everything to suddenly become easier.

But then my phone buzzed.

A message from the university.

The investigation wasn’t over.

There was one more person involved.

Someone who had accessed my account before the report was submitted.

Someone who wasn’t in the screenshot.

I opened the message.

And my heart stopped.

Because the name they found wasn’t Mia.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

May you like

It was someone I never expected.

My best friend, Chloe.
