Chapter 7: The Recording That Changed Everything
For several seconds after the recording stopped, nobody spoke.
My mother's voice still seemed to hang in the living room, fragile and familiar, as if she had just stepped out of her old sewing room to call me downstairs for dinner.
Then I heard my father whisper something I had never heard him say before.
"No.""
He stared at the little recording device on the coffee table.
"No, that isn't possible.""
Victoria sat hunched on the sofa, both hands covering her face. Samantha stood beside the fireplace, clutching her handbag against her stomach. Her earlier confidence had disappeared, leaving her looking suddenly young.
I was the only person who couldn't stop thinking about the unfinished sentence.
And if anything happens to me, tell Emily that her father—
What?
What had my mother wanted me to know about him?
I turned toward Samantha.
"Play it again.""
She shook her head.
"I can't.""
"Why not?""
"Because that's all there is.""
"You're telling me you have a recording of my mother, you play the most important part of it, and then you tell me there's nothing else?""
"I didn't say there was nothing else.""
My heart lurched.
I stepped toward her.
"Then where is the rest?""
Samantha backed away.
"I don't have it.""
"Who does?""
"I don't know!""
Her voice cracked.
Dad finally moved.
He picked up the device, examined its small screen, and pressed the playback button. The same distorted recording played again.
My mother's voice.
Victoria's name.
The warning.
Then the unfinished sentence.
Dad listened without blinking.
When the recording stopped, he looked at Victoria.
"Did Elena make this?""
Victoria lowered her hands.
Tears had streaked her makeup, but her expression had hardened into something I couldn't read.
"Yes.""
The answer came so quietly that I almost missed it.
Dad's fingers tightened around the device.
"You knew she recorded that conversation?""
Victoria nodded.
"She asked me to keep it.""
"Why?""
"Because she was afraid.""
"Of what?""
Victoria looked at me.
"Of what would happen if the truth came out.""
I felt my stomach twist.
"What truth?""
She shook her head.
"I can't explain everything here.""
Dad's voice sharpened.
"You've had ten years to explain it.""
"I know.""
"Ten years, Victoria. Ten years of living in this house, eating at my table, watching Emily grow up, and knowing something about her mother that could change everything she believes.""
Victoria began to cry again.
"I never wanted it to happen this way.""
"Then tell us how it happened.""
She looked at Samantha.
Her daughter shook her head frantically.
"Mom, don't.""
Victoria closed her eyes.
That tiny exchange told me more than either of them had intended.
Samantha wasn't protecting her mother from an accusation.
She was protecting her from a confession.
I stepped toward Victoria.
"Did you steal the money from my trust?""
She flinched.
"Emily—"
"Did you?""
"I didn't take it for myself.""
The room went silent.
Dad stared at her.
"What does that mean?""
Victoria wiped her cheeks.
"It means the money wasn't used the way Elena intended, but it wasn't as simple as stealing it.""
I felt anger rise so quickly that my hands began to shake.
"Four hundred thousand dollars disappeared from an account my mother created for me. I worked through college because I thought we couldn't afford anything else. I wore secondhand clothes to interviews.
I skipped meals when my paycheck was late. And you want to tell me it wasn't simple?""
Victoria covered her mouth.
"I know what you went through.""
"No, you don't!""
My voice echoed through the house.
"You watched me struggle, and you said nothing.""
She looked down.
Dad placed the recording device on the table.
"Victoria, start at the beginning.""
She stared at the carpet.
"After Elena died, Daniel was barely functioning. He was trying to take care of Emily, run his company, and deal with the funeral arrangements. There were legal documents everywhere. Financial statements, insurance forms, business records.""
"I remember," Dad said.
"I helped organize some of them.""
"That doesn't explain the trust.""
Victoria nodded.
"I know.""
She took a shaky breath.
"Elena had contacted me before she died.""
I stared at her.
"Why would my mother contact you?""
"Because she knew me through a mutual acquaintance. I had worked in administrative accounting before I met Daniel. She wanted someone independent to review a set of financial records.""
Dad's expression changed.
"You knew Elena before we met?""
"Not well. We'd spoken several times. She was concerned about irregular transactions connected to her design business.""
"What transactions?""
"Payments that didn't match the invoices. Transfers that had been authorized under her business account but couldn't be traced to legitimate suppliers.""
I thought of the note Margaret had found in the studio.
The date.
The bank reference number.
My father's name.
"Was Dad involved?"" I asked.
Victoria shook her head quickly.
"Not in the way you think.""
"Then what way?""
Victoria looked at him.
"Daniel had signed a general financial authorization when Elena was hospitalized. It allowed certain administrative matters to be handled while she was receiving treatment.""
Dad frowned.
"I signed a power of attorney for medical and household matters. I never authorized anyone to take money from her business.""
"I know," Victoria whispered.
"Then why did you say my name was on the records?""
"Because someone used your authorization to move money.""
Dad went completely still.
"Who?""
Victoria didn't answer.
Samantha suddenly spoke.
"Mom, stop.""
Victoria turned toward her.
"No.""
"You promised!""
"I promised to protect you. I never promised to keep lying forever.""
Samantha's face crumpled.
I looked between them.
"What does Samantha have to do with any of this?""
Victoria gripped the edge of the sofa.
"Some of the money was used to cover debts.""
"Whose debts?""
She looked at Samantha.
My stepsister shook her head, tears running down her cheeks.
"Don't.""
Victoria whispered, "Your biological father's.""
I blinked.
Samantha's biological father, Richard, had left when she was fourteen. I'd heard fragments of the story over the years. He had been a businessman who made several bad investments before disappearing from Victoria's life.
According to Samantha, he had abandoned them with debts and broken promises.
Victoria had always refused to discuss the details.
"What debts?"" Dad asked.
"Richard owed money to several lenders. Some of them threatened Samantha. He had used her name on financial agreements she didn't understand.""
Samantha pressed her hands against her ears.
"Please stop.""
Victoria continued anyway.
"Elena discovered the transactions because one of the payments had been routed through a company connected to her design business. She contacted me because she suspected someone had been using Daniel's authorization to access accounts.""
Dad stared at her.
"And you knew who was doing it?""
Victoria's silence was answer enough.
"Who?"" he demanded.
She began shaking.
"I was trying to stop it.""
"Who was taking the money?""
Victoria looked at the recording device.
Then at Samantha.
Finally, she whispered a name.
"Richard.""
Samantha collapsed onto the sofa.
I stared at her.
"Your father?""
"He told me he was borrowing it," she whispered.
"He said he'd repay everything before anyone noticed.""
"You knew?""
"Not at first.""
Her voice was barely audible.
"He came to me when I was sixteen. He said he was in trouble, that people were threatening him, and that Mom would lose everything if he couldn't pay them. He told me Dad was helping him.""
I turned toward my father.
Dad looked stunned.
"I never gave Richard a cent.""
Samantha began crying harder.
"I know that now.""
"When did you find out?""
"Years ago.""
The words struck me like a blow.
Years ago.
She had known.
She had known someone had taken money intended for me, and she had spent years resenting me for the things that money should have paid for.
I took a step back.
"You let me struggle.""
Samantha covered her face.
"I was scared.""
"You watched me work twenty hours a week while you bought designer handbags.""
"I didn't know how much was left!""
"But you knew the money was mine!""
She didn't answer.
I turned toward Victoria.
"And you?""
Victoria looked at me through her tears.
"I tried to recover it. I contacted Richard, but he disappeared. By then, most of the money was gone. I thought if I told Daniel, he'd report everything, and Samantha would be dragged into a criminal investigation because Richard had used her name.""
Dad's face turned cold.
"So you hid it.""
"I was trying to protect her.""
"By allowing Emily to believe her mother had left her nothing?""
Victoria began sobbing.
"I thought I could fix it.""
Dad shook his head.
"You didn't protect Samantha. You taught her that the truth was something you could bury if the consequences were frightening enough.""
Samantha stood abruptly.
"Don't blame Mom for everything! Richard did this!""
"And you destroyed Emily's dress," Dad replied.
She went silent.
"You had nothing to do with Richard's original actions, as far as I know. But you knew about the trust. You knew what Emily had lost. And when you became angry with her, you chose to hurt her using the one thing you knew she couldn't replace.""
Samantha stared at him.
For the first time, she looked ashamed.
Then the front doorbell rang.
All four of us turned.
Dad walked into the hallway and opened the door.
A man stood on the porch holding a battered leather briefcase.
He was older than the man in Samantha's photograph, with graying hair and a deeply lined face. His eyes moved past Dad and settled on Victoria.
"Hello, Victoria.""
She made a strangled sound.
Samantha backed away from the window.
Dad stepped into the doorway.
"Who are you?""
The man looked at him.
"My name is Richard Hale.""
Samantha's father.
May you like
He lifted the briefcase.
"And I think it's time you all heard the rest of Elena's recording.""
