Chapter 8: The Truth Rachel Tried to Bury
Rachel didn't leave.
She stood at the end of the conference table with her handbag clutched against her side, watching me read the hospital report.
For the first time since she'd entered my life, she looked genuinely afraid.
Not afraid of my father.
Not afraid of Margaret.
Afraid of what I might discover.
I lifted my eyes.
"What does this mean?""
Rachel swallowed.
"It means your mother was trying to protect you.""
"From whom?""
"From Jonathan.""
"Why?""
"Because he believed you were his daughter.""
I glanced at the report.
"The document says I wasn't.""
Rachel shook her head.
"That's not what it says.""
"Then tell me what it says.""
She looked toward the door, as if calculating whether she could leave before anyone stopped her.
My father noticed.
"You're not walking out until you explain why you've been trying to access Elena's trust.""
Rachel turned on him.
"You have no idea what I've done to keep this family together.""
"You stole from my daughter.""
"I protected this family!""
Her voice cracked across the room.
Margaret rose from her chair.
"Rachel, I strongly advise you to be careful about what you say. The financial records are under investigation.""
Rachel ignored her.
She looked directly at me.
"Your mother was going to destroy everything. Jonathan was powerful, Daniel. He could have ruined her. He could have ruined all of us.""
"Then why help him?"" Dad demanded.
"Because I thought I could control the situation!""
She struck the table with her palm.
"I thought if I kept him satisfied, he would leave Elena alone. I thought if I moved the money where he wanted it, he would stop threatening her.""
My stomach turned.
"You moved money from my trust because Jonathan threatened my mother?""
Rachel looked at me.
"Some of it was his money.""
"That doesn't make it yours.""
"I was trying to protect you!""
I laughed bitterly.
"You protected me by stealing my inheritance? By burning my relationship with my father? By letting Mia treat me like garbage?""
Rachel flinched at the mention of Mia.
"Your sister is young.""
"She's nineteen. She deliberately burned my dress.""
Rachel's eyes hardened.
"And you used that incident to turn Daniel against us.""
The words were so absurd that I couldn't speak for a moment.
My father stepped forward.
"Stop blaming Lily for the consequences of your own decisions.""
Rachel looked at him, and something in her expression changed.
"You really think you're innocent in all this?""
Dad went still.
"What does that mean?""
Rachel shook her head.
"Ask Elena why she chose you. Ask her why she never told you the whole truth about the pregnancy.""
My father stared at her.
"I know she was pregnant when we met.""
"Do you know why?""
"Because she loved me.""
Rachel let out a short, broken laugh.
"She loved you because you were safe. Because you didn't ask questions. Because you were willing to raise another man's child without knowing what that man had done.""
I felt my hands curl into fists.
"Stop talking about my mother as if she were a liar.""
Rachel looked at me.
"She lied to everyone, Lily. She lied to Daniel. She lied to Jonathan. And she lied to you.""
Margaret moved toward the document.
"Rachel, where did you obtain this report?""
Rachel snatched it away.
"It's mine.""
"No," Margaret replied firmly.
"It concerns a sealed estate file. If you obtained it unlawfully, you should return it immediately.""
Rachel stared at her.
Then she shoved the report back into her handbag.
"You'll all regret this.""
Dad pointed toward the door.
"Leave.""
This time, she obeyed.
But before she disappeared down the hallway, she turned toward me.
"You think your mother left you a fortune. She left you a mess. And when the truth comes out, you'll wish you'd never opened that box.""
The door slammed.
I sank into my chair.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Margaret took a slow breath.
"We need to get that report authenticated. We also need to retrieve the sealed file immediately.""
Dad looked at me.
"Are you all right?""
I shook my head.
"No.""
He sat beside me.
"Neither am I.""
I leaned against his shoulder.
"She said Mom lied to you.""
He stared at the door.
"Your mother kept things from me. That doesn't mean everything she told me was a lie.""
"Do you regret putting your name on my birth certificate?""
He turned toward me so quickly that his chair scraped the floor.
"Never.""
His answer was immediate.
"I would sign it a thousand times.""
I began to cry.
He pulled me into his arms and held me while the room settled around us.
For a moment, I was a little girl again, standing beside him in the kitchen after scraping my knee, convinced that if Dad held me long enough, nothing bad could happen.
But I wasn't a little girl anymore.
And the world my mother had tried to protect me from was waiting outside the door.
Two hours later, Margaret accompanied us to the bank.
The safe deposit room was small and cold, with gray walls and a security camera mounted above the door. A bank employee verified my identity, checked the authorization documents, and led us to box 218.
I inserted the key.
The box slid open.
Inside were three envelopes, a small leather-bound notebook, and a flash drive sealed in a plastic sleeve.
The first envelope contained the original trust agreement.
The second held a series of bank statements.
The third was addressed to me.
I recognized my mother's handwriting immediately.
Margaret stepped back.
"You may read it privately if you'd prefer.""
I shook my head.
"I want my father here.""
Dad moved beside me.
I opened the envelope.
My darling Lily,
If you are reading this, then the people I feared have finally begun fighting over the truth.
I wish I could have told you everything while I was alive. But I was afraid that the truth would become a weapon before you were old enough to understand it.
You were never a mistake.
You were never a bargaining chip.
And you were never responsible for the choices made by the adults around you.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
Then I continued.
Jonathan Reed is not your biological father. He believes he is because Rachel allowed him to believe it.
I looked at Dad.
He stared at the page, his face pale.
I read on.
Your biological father is someone who loved me before I met Jonathan. Someone I lost contact with because I was too young to understand the difference between love and fear.
He does not know the truth about you.
If you wish to find him, the documents in the leather notebook will tell you where to begin.
But please remember that you owe no one a relationship simply because of blood.
You owe yourself the freedom to choose.
All my love,
Mom.
I lowered the letter.
"She knew.""
Dad nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
"She knew Jonathan wasn't my father.""
"Apparently.""
I opened the leather notebook.
The first pages contained dates and names. The handwriting was my mother's, neat and deliberate.
A name appeared on the fourth page.
*Michael Bennett.*
I looked at Thomas's surname.
"Is he related to you?""
Margaret glanced at the page.
"Possibly. We should establish that before drawing conclusions.""
I turned another page.
There was a photograph of my mother standing beside a young man with dark hair and a crooked smile. They were sitting on the hood of a car, laughing at something outside the frame.
On the back, my mother had written:
Michael, summer of 2005. The happiest summer of my life.
The next page contained a letter.
Elena,
I know you think leaving is the only way to protect me. But I need you to understand that I don't care about the company, the money, or what my father expects.
I care about you.
If you ever come back, I'll be waiting.
Michael.
I looked up.
"Who is Michael Bennett?""
Thomas had remained quiet throughout the reading.
Now he closed his eyes.
"My younger brother.""
The room went still.
"You have another brother?"" I asked.
"Yes.""
"Where is he?""
Thomas shook his head.
"I don't know.""
My father looked at him sharply.
"What do you mean, you don't know?""
"Michael left the country twenty years ago. He and Elena were together before she met Jonathan. Our father disapproved of the relationship because Michael was supposed to take over the family business.""
I stared at the photograph.
"My mother loved him?""
"Very much.""
"Then why did she marry Dad?""
Thomas looked at my father with compassion.
"Because Michael disappeared before she discovered she was pregnant.""
I felt as though the floor had shifted beneath me.
"Why?""
"That's what I've been trying to understand.""
Margaret picked up the flash drive.
"We should have this examined professionally. If it contains correspondence or financial records, it may clarify the timeline.""
She looked at me.
"Your mother appears to have left you enough information to identify your biological father, but we need to verify everything.""
I nodded.
For the first time, I had a name.
Michael Bennett.
A man who had loved my mother before Jonathan entered her life. A man who had disappeared before I was born. A man who might have spent twenty years believing he had lost the woman he loved, never knowing she had carried his child.
But the notebook held another surprise.
At the very back, a folded newspaper clipping had been tucked into the binding.
The headline read:
*LOCAL INVESTOR MISSING AFTER COMPANY FRAUD INVESTIGATION.*
Beneath it was a photograph of Michael.
The article stated that he had vanished shortly after a financial investigation began at his father's company. Authorities had questioned him about missing funds, but no charges had ever been filed.
The last paragraph contained a sentence that made my stomach turn.
Investigators believe Bennett may have left the country using a false identity.
I looked at Thomas.
"Was Michael involved in the missing money?""
Thomas's face tightened.
"No.""
"How can you be sure?""
"Because I knew him. He hated what our father did with money. He wouldn't steal from Elena.""
"But he disappeared.""
"Yes.""
"After a fraud investigation.""
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"Yes.""
I stared at the newspaper.
My mother had loved a man who disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Rachel had helped Jonathan Reed manipulate the story of my birth. Money had vanished from my trust, and someone had tried to erase the evidence.
Perhaps these weren't separate secrets.
Perhaps they were all parts of the same betrayal.
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice spoke quietly.
"Lily Parker?""
"Who is this?""
"My name is Michael Bennett.""
My knees nearly buckled.
Thomas grabbed the edge of the table.
Dad reached for my arm.
The voice continued.
"I know you've found your mother's notebook. I know what it says about me.""
I struggled to speak.
"Where are you?""
"That doesn't matter right now.""
"You're my father?""
Silence.
Then, very softly, he said, "I believe I am.""
My eyes filled with tears.
"Why didn't you come back?""
"I tried.""
"Then why weren't you there?""
His breath caught.
"Because someone told me your mother had died before you were born.""
I covered my mouth.
"What?""
"I received a letter saying Elena had died during childbirth. It included a copy of a hospital document and a warning to stay away from her family.""
I looked at the report Rachel had brought to Margaret's office.
"Who sent it?""
Michael's voice hardened.
"Jonathan Reed.""
Then he said something that made every person in the room freeze.
"But that isn't the worst part, Lily.""
"What is?""
"I received another letter three days ago.""
My heart pounded.
"What did it say?""
He paused.
"It said your mother had left you a fortune, and that if I wanted to see my daughter before I died, I had to come home.""
I gripped the phone.
"Who sent it?""
May you like
Michael answered immediately.
"Rachel Parker.""
