Chapter 9: The Voice From The Past
I didn’t speak.
I couldn’t.
The phone was pressed against my ear, but my mind was somewhere else.
Somewhere twenty years ago.
Somewhere before Aaliyah.
Before Renee.
Before all the secrets.
“Who is this?””
The voice on the other end trembled.
“Marcus, please listen to me.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
I knew that voice.
I knew it in the same way you know a song you haven’t heard in years.
The same way you know the smell of a childhood home that no longer exists.
“Mom?””
Aaliyah looked at me.
Her eyes widened.
Detective Brooks stood immediately.
“Who is it?””
I couldn’t answer.
The voice continued.
“You cannot trust everyone around you.””
My heart pounded.
“You’re dead.””
A pause.
Then:
“I know.””
The room became silent.
Even the detective stopped moving.
“How are you calling me?””
“Because I knew this day would come.””
My breathing became shallow.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, this isn’t real.””
“Marcus…”
The voice cracked.
“I wish it wasn’t.””
I stood up.
“Where are you?””
No answer.
“Where are you?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Somewhere I should have never been.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
The screen went dark.
Aaliyah stepped closer.
“Marcus.””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know what’s happening.””
And for the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Fear.
Detective Brooks reached for the phone.
“Did she identify herself?””
“Yes.””
“Did you recognize the voice?””
I nodded.
“She said she was my mother.””
The detective exchanged a look with another officer outside the room.
That scared me more than anything.
Because professionals only looked that serious when they already knew something.
“What?”” I asked.
Detective Brooks sat down slowly.
“Marcus, your mother’s death certificate has been questioned before.””
I stared.
“What?””
“We reopened the file last year.””
“Why?””
“Because new information appeared.””
Aaliyah whispered:
“What information?””
Detective Brooks opened a folder.
“The woman who was officially identified as Elena Hale may not have been Elena Hale.””
The words made no sense.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone may have died under her name.””
I felt dizzy.
My entire life was suddenly a house built on false walls.
“My mother…”
I struggled to speak.
“She disappeared?””
“We believe she was forced to disappear.””
Aaliyah looked at me.
“And this connects to me?””
Detective Brooks nodded.
“Yes.””
I hated that answer.
Because everything somehow came back to Aaliyah.
The daughter I raised.
The daughter I didn’t know was mine.
The daughter everyone seemed willing to lie for.
“Why?””
Detective Brooks opened another file.
“Because Elena discovered something before she vanished.””
“What?””
She looked at Aaliyah.
“Your birth.””
Aaliyah froze.
“My birth?””
“Yes.””
The detective continued.
“According to the evidence, Elena helped Renee hide Aaliyah’s true paternity.””
I stared.
“My mother helped hide my own daughter from me?””
Detective Brooks didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Aaliyah looked hurt.
“Why would anyone do that?””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody knew.
Until my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*Come alone if you want answers.*
Then another message appeared.
A location.
I showed Detective Brooks.
“No.””
Her answer came immediately.
“You are not going.””
“I need answers.””
“It could be a trap.””
“I’ve spent ten years living inside a lie.””
I looked at Aaliyah.
“I’m done waiting.””
Aaliyah grabbed my arm.
“Don’t go alone.””
I looked at her.
“Aaliyah—”
“No.””
Her voice was firm.
The same confidence she had when she was younger.
“I spent my whole life waiting for people to decide what I could handle.””
She swallowed.
“I’m coming.””
I wanted to tell her no.
I wanted to protect her.
But then I realized something.
That was the mistake everyone had made.
They protected her with lies.
They thought they were saving her.
They were only stealing her choices.
So I nodded.
“Okay.””
The location was an abandoned warehouse near the edge of town.
The kind of place where bad memories waited.
Detective Brooks followed from a distance.
Aaliyah and I walked inside.
The air smelled like dust and rust.
Then a voice spoke.
“You shouldn’t have come.””
I stopped.
A woman stepped out from the shadows.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
My knees almost gave out.
“Mom.””
Elena Hale looked at me.
And cried.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words carried twenty years of pain.
I wanted to run toward her.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I stood there.
Because I didn’t know who she was anymore.
“You let me think you were dead.””
Her face broke.
“I know.””
“You let me grow up without you.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe I was alone.””
She closed her eyes.
“I know.””
Aaliyah stepped forward.
“Why?””
Elena looked at her.
And immediately started crying harder.
“Oh, Aaliyah.””
My daughter froze.
Because this stranger knew her name.
“You know me?””
Elena nodded.
“I held you when you were born.””
Aaliyah’s eyes widened.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did everyone lie?””
Elena looked at me.
Then away.
“Because Derek wasn’t the only dangerous person.””
The words chilled me.
“Who else?””
She looked toward the door.
Like she was afraid someone was listening.
“Your grandfather.””
I froze.
“My grandfather?””
“My father.””
Aaliyah looked confused.
“But your father is dead.””
Elena nodded.
“He is.””
“Then how?””
Elena reached into her coat.
And pulled out a small envelope.
“Because before he died, he left instructions.””
I took the envelope.
My name was written on the front.
My handwriting.
But I didn’t remember writing it.
“What is this?””
Elena whispered:
“The truth about why you were never supposed to find out Aaliyah was yours.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was one photograph.
One document.
And one sentence.
I read it once.
Then again.
Because my brain refused to accept it.
*Marcus Hale was never Aaliyah’s stepfather. He was listed as her father from the beginning.*
I looked up.
“What?””
Elena wiped her tears.
“Renee changed the records.””
Aaliyah stepped back.
“No.””
Elena nodded.
“She didn’t just hide your father from you.””
She looked at me.
“She erased him.””
Then the warehouse door slammed open.
Everyone turned.
A figure stood in the entrance.
Derek.
But he wasn’t smiling.
He looked terrified.
Because he wasn’t there to stop us.
He was there because he was running from something.
And he said:
“You need to leave now.””
Detective Brooks stepped forward.
“Why?””
Derek looked behind him.
May you like
Then whispered:
“Because the person who started all of this is here.””
