Chapter 8: The Man Behind The Disappearance

The detective asked us to meet at her office.

Not tomorrow.

Not next week.

Immediately.

That alone told me everything.

Something bigger was happening.

Aaliyah sat beside me during the drive.

Neither of us spoke.

The silence between us was different now.

Before, it was filled with anger.

Now it was filled with fear.

When we arrived, Detective Brooks was waiting.

She was younger than I expected.

Early forties.

Sharp eyes.

A stack of files on her desk.

“Mr. Hale. Aaliyah.””

She motioned for us to sit.

“I know this is overwhelming.””

Aaliyah crossed her arms.

“Just tell us.””

Detective Brooks nodded.

“Twelve years ago, Derek Collins disappeared after a complaint was filed against him.””

I looked confused.

“Complaint?””

“Yes.””

“What kind?””

She opened a file.

“Financial fraud.””

Derek.

The word itself felt poisonous now.

Aaliyah looked at her.

“My father?””

Detective Brooks softened.

“I know that’s difficult to hear.””

“No.””

Aaliyah shook her head.

“I need to know.””

The detective continued.

“Derek was involved with a company that was investigated for misusing client funds.””

I frowned.

“Why wasn’t he arrested?””

“Because he disappeared before charges were finalized.””

Aaliyah whispered:

“So he ran.””

Detective Brooks nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked down.

All these years, Aaliyah had imagined him as a wounded man who needed forgiveness.

But maybe he was just someone who escaped consequences.

“What does this have to do with me?”” I asked.

Detective Brooks looked at me.

“Your name appeared in the original report.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

She turned a page.

“You signed a statement.””

“I did?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Twelve years ago.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Aaliyah looked at me.

“What statement?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t remember.””

Detective Brooks studied my face.

“Because you weren’t supposed to.””

The room went quiet.

“What does that mean?””

She placed another document on the table.

“A memory report.””

I stared.

“What is that?””

“After Derek disappeared, you were questioned.””

“I don’t remember being questioned.””

“Exactly.””

Aaliyah grabbed my hand.

“Marcus?””

Detective Brooks spoke carefully.

“You were drugged.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

“We believe someone gave you medication without your knowledge. You were confused for several hours.””

I looked at Aaliyah.

“I don’t remember.””

“That’s the point.””

The detective continued.

“During that time, someone accessed your personal documents.””

My voice became quiet.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Because one name had already appeared everywhere.

Derek.

Aaliyah looked horrified.

“No.””

Detective Brooks looked at her.

“I know this is hard.””

“No.””

Aaliyah shook her head.

“He wouldn’t.””

I remembered saying similar things about Renee.

About everyone.

People believed what they needed to survive.

The detective slid another paper across the table.

“This was found in Derek’s old records.””

Aaliyah picked it up.

Her face changed.

“What is this?””

I looked.

A photograph.

Aaliyah as a baby.

And beside her…

Me.

Holding her.

My breath stopped.

“I don’t remember that picture.””

Detective Brooks nodded.

“Because it was taken before you knew she existed.””

Aaliyah looked at me.

“What?””

The detective spoke quietly.

“Marcus, you and Renee were together before Derek.””

I felt the room spinning.

“That’s not possible.””

“It is.””

She pointed at the photograph.

“You were there when Aaliyah was born.””

I stared.

“No.””

Detective Brooks leaned forward.

“You were there.””

Aaliyah whispered:

“Then why didn’t anyone tell you?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question.

The question that had followed us for years.

Why?

Why hide a father from his daughter?

Why let a man who abandoned her become the person she dreamed about?

Why allow me to stand outside a graduation ceremony holding flowers like a stranger?

Then Detective Brooks said:

“Because someone wanted you to believe you were never her father.””

I looked at the file.

The photograph.

The evidence of a life stolen from me.

“Who?””

The detective’s expression hardened.

“Someone who benefited from Derek disappearing.””

Aaliyah stood suddenly.

“Who?””

Detective Brooks looked at her.

Then at me.

And said:

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

The detective nodded.

“Your mother, Elena Hale.””

The name hit me like a punch.

A woman who had been dead for fifteen years.

A woman who couldn’t defend herself.

A woman who had never once been part of this story.

Until now.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A familiar voice whispered.

A voice I had not heard since childhood.

“Marcus…”

I stopped breathing.

Because the dead woman on my family records had just called my phone.

And she said:

“You need to stop looking for the truth.””
