Chapter 4: The Person Behind the Door
Daniel looked at his phone.
Nobody moved.
The ringtone echoed through the bedroom.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
He finally answered.
“Hello?””
I watched his face change.
At first, confusion.
Then disbelief.
Then anger.
“Where did you get this number?””
Silence.
Daniel walked away.
“What are you talking about?””
I looked at Mia.
She looked terrified.
Not because she had been exposed.
Because something worse was happening.
Daniel ended the call.
“What was that?”” Claire asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel?””
He looked at me.
And for a moment, I saw the little boy from years ago.
The child who trusted me.
The child who loved me.
Then the moment disappeared.
“Someone sent me a file.””
“What file?””
He swallowed.
“A recording.””
Mia whispered:
“No.””
Everyone turned.
“You know what it is?””
She stepped backward.
“No.””
But nobody believed her.
Daniel opened the file.
A voice came through the phone speaker.
Mia’s voice.
Clear.
Calm.
Planning.
“Thomas will never suspect his own son.””
My stomach dropped.
The recording continued.
Another voice answered.
A man.
“You’re sure Daniel will choose you?””
Mia laughed.
“He always has.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
The pain on his face was unbearable.
The recording continued.
“Once Thomas signs the papers, the house is yours.””
“And if he refuses?””
A pause.
Then Mia said:
“Then we use the accusation.””
The room went completely silent.
Daniel lowered the phone.
“No.””
Mia began crying.
“Daniel, listen.””
“No.””
“I can explain.””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“You used me.””
She stepped closer.
“I did it for us.””
“For us?””
He laughed bitterly.
“You destroyed my father for us?””
I looked at my son.
And despite everything, despite the slap, despite his betrayal, I saw his pain.
Because he had been manipulated too.
Then another sound came from downstairs.
A door opening.
Everyone froze.
The house was supposed to be empty.
The guests had left hours ago.
Slow footsteps moved through the hallway.
Step.
Step.
Step.
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Dad…”
The footsteps stopped outside the bedroom.
Then the door slowly opened.
A man stood there.
Older.
Gray hair.
Holding a briefcase.
I recognized him immediately.
My heart stopped.
Because I had seen him before.
Not recently.
Years ago.
At my wife’s funeral.
Daniel whispered:
“Dad…”
I stared at the man.
“How are you alive?””
The man smiled.
And said:
“Because your wife’s death was never what you were told.””
Nobody breathed.
The man stepped inside.
“I’m sorry, Thomas.””
My hands trembled.
“Who are you?””
He placed the briefcase on the floor.
“My name is Robert Vale.””
The room exploded into silence.
The dead man was standing in front of me.
And then he opened the briefcase.
Inside was one photograph.
A photograph of Margaret.
With a secret she had hidden from all of us.

Including me.
What kind of reveal should the final chapters focus on: *Margaret’s secret or Mia’s full betrayal*?
