Chapter 2: The Truth in the Hallway
Daniel followed me into the study with the expression of a man walking toward an execution.
Mia stayed behind.
I noticed that immediately.
She had spent the last ten minutes clinging to my son, insisting that I was dangerous. Yet the moment I agreed to show him the footage, she suddenly needed to remain upstairs.
Claire noticed too.
“Why aren't you coming?”” she asked Mia.
Mia pressed a tissue beneath her eyes.
“Because I can't watch that man pretend he's innocent.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Five minutes ago, you told me not to watch the footage.””
“Because you're angry,” she snapped.
“You'll believe whatever your father shows you.””
“It's a recording, Mia.””
“Recordings can be edited.””
I stopped walking.
That was an interesting accusation.
The security system stored footage automatically. The cameras recorded directly to a local drive, with a secondary backup uploaded to a secure account. I had installed the system after the missing jewelry incident, following advice from a retired police officer who lived two houses down.
I had never edited a single recording.
“Mia,” I said, “if you believe the footage has been altered, we'll ask the police to examine it.””
Her mouth opened, then closed.
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Can we please stop arguing?””
“No,” Claire replied.
“We cannot. Dad has been accused of something serious, and you're acting like the only problem is that you're embarrassed.””
Daniel turned on her.
“You think I'm enjoying this?””
“I think you hit him before asking one question.””
His jaw tightened.
“I was protecting my wife.””
“And what if you're wrong?””
He didn't answer.
I walked into the study and switched on the computer.
This room had once belonged to Margaret. After she died, I had moved my desk here because I couldn't bear sleeping in the bedroom where she had taken her final breaths.
Her books still lined the shelves.
A small photograph of her sat beside my monitor.
I looked at it briefly.
“Margaret,” I murmured, “I hope you know I'm trying.””
Daniel heard me.
“Dad, please don't turn this into another conversation about Mom.””
I looked at him.
“Your mother would never have hit me before hearing my side.””
He flinched.
For a moment, I thought he might apologize.
Instead, he folded his arms.
“Just show me the footage.””
I opened the security application and selected the upstairs hallway camera.
The recording began at 7:42 p.m.
Mia appeared on the screen.
She entered the hallway alone, glanced toward the staircase, and walked to the window.
For nearly two minutes, she did nothing.
She checked her phone.
She looked at the stairs again.
Then she turned toward the camera.
Not casually.
Directly.
Her face was perfectly visible.
She stared at the lens for three full seconds before looking away.
Daniel leaned closer to the screen.
“Why was she looking at the camera?””
I said nothing.
The footage continued.
At 7:45, I appeared on the staircase.
I walked toward her with my hands at my sides.
The recording had no audio, but our movements were clear.
I stopped several feet away.
Mia said something.
I answered.
She glanced at the camera again.
Then, without warning, she grabbed her blouse and tore it open.
Daniel jerked backward.
“No.””
On the screen, Mia pulled at her hair and screamed.
I stepped away from her.
She threw herself against the wall.
My son watched the recording without blinking.
Then the part that changed everything happened.
Before Daniel and Claire reached the hallway, Mia looked directly at the camera again.
She raised one hand.
Not toward me.
Toward the lens.
Then she mouthed three words.
I slowed the recording.
Rewound it.
Played it again.
Daniel's face drained of color.
Claire leaned toward the monitor.
“What did she say?””
I froze the image.
The movement of Mia's lips was unmistakable.
*He is coming.*
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Coming from where?””
I enlarged the image.
Mia had been looking toward the staircase, not at me.
She had said those words before I appeared.
The timestamp was 7:41.
One minute before I reached the landing.
Claire covered her mouth.
“Oh, my God.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. No, that doesn't mean anything.””
I turned to him.
“What do you think it means?””
“She could have been talking about somebody else.””
“Who?””
He didn't answer.
I continued the recording.
At 7:49, Daniel rushed into the hallway. He looked at Mia, then at me. His shoulders squared. His right arm rose.
The slap was silent on the video, but I watched my head jerk to the side.
Claire reached for him.
He pushed past her.
Then Mia looked at the camera again.
This time, she smiled.
It lasted less than a second.
But there was no mistaking it.
A small, satisfied smile.
Daniel backed away from the monitor.
“Stop it.””
I paused the video.
“Why?””
“Because I said stop!””
He slammed his palm against the desk, rattling Margaret's photograph.
I picked it up before it fell.
“Be careful,” I said.
He stared at the picture in my hands.
For the first time since the confrontation, he looked ashamed.
“Dad…”
I waited.
He swallowed.
“I shouldn't have hit you.””
It was the first honest thing he had said all evening.
But an apology for the slap wasn't an explanation for what had happened.
“Why did you believe her so quickly?”” I asked.
“She's my wife.””
“And I'm your father.””
His eyes filled with frustration.
“You don't understand what it's been like.””
“Then explain it.””
He sat down heavily.
For several seconds, he stared at his hands.
“She's been scared lately,” he said.
“She told me someone had been following her.””
“Who?””
“She wouldn't say.””
“When?””
“About two weeks ago.””
I remembered Mia arriving at my house early one Sunday morning, asking whether I had seen a man standing near the driveway.
At the time, I assumed she was talking about a delivery driver.
I hadn't thought about it again.
“Did she ever report this person?”” I asked.
“No.””
“Did she show you any messages?””
Daniel hesitated.
“She said she didn't want to involve the police.””
I looked at the frozen image on the monitor.
Mia had been standing alone in my hallway, looking at the camera as if she knew exactly where it was.
Then she had waited for me to appear.
The timing was too deliberate to ignore.
“Daniel, I need you to answer one question honestly.””
He raised his eyes.
“Did Mia know about these cameras?””
“I don't know.””
“Think carefully.””
He rubbed his face.
“She asked me about the security system once. A few months ago.””
“What did she ask?””
“Whether the recordings were stored in the cloud. Whether you could delete them remotely.””
My stomach tightened.
“And what did you tell her?””
“That you probably could.””
I stared at him.
He looked suddenly uncomfortable.
“Dad, I didn't think it mattered.””
Neither had I, until expensive jewelry disappeared from my bedroom.
I opened another recording, this time from the camera near the entrance to my bedroom.
The system allowed me to search by date.
I selected the night the gold bracelet went missing.
Daniel stood behind me.
“What are you doing?””
“Looking for something.””
I moved through the footage.
At 9:17 p.m., Mia entered the upstairs hallway carrying a glass of water.
At 9:19, she disappeared into the guest room.
At 9:32, she came back out.
Her hands were empty.
She looked toward the staircase, then walked into my bedroom.
I felt my throat tighten.
Daniel whispered, “Why is she going in there?””
“I don't know.””
The camera didn't cover the inside of the bedroom. It recorded only the hallway and the doorway.
Three minutes later, Mia emerged.
This time, she was carrying a small black handbag.
She closed the bedroom door carefully behind her.
Then she walked downstairs.
I paused the video.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“That could be anything.””
“Yes,” I replied.
“It could.””
I wasn't ready to accuse her of theft based on a recording of her carrying a bag. But the footage established something important.
Mia had entered my bedroom without permission.
And she had lied about what happened in the hallway.
I reached for the phone beside my keyboard.
Daniel caught my wrist.
“Dad, wait.””
I looked down at his hand.
He released me immediately.
“I'm asking you not to call the police yet,” he said.
“Why?””
“Because if this gets out, it could destroy my marriage.””
I studied him.
“Your wife accused your father of attacking her. You struck me in front of your sister and children. And now you're asking me to protect your marriage?””
He looked away.
“I'm asking you to give me time.””
“Time for what?””
“To talk to her.””
I considered it.
Despite everything, Daniel was still my son. I wanted to believe that somewhere beneath his anger was the boy who used to sit on the kitchen counter while Margaret taught him how to make pancakes.
I wanted to believe he had acted out of fear rather than cruelty.
“Until tomorrow morning,” I said.
“You can talk to her. But nobody deletes those recordings, and nobody touches my computer.””
He nodded quickly.
“Thank you.””
I didn't thank him for anything.
He left the study.
I remained at the desk, staring at the camera footage.
Then I noticed something I had missed earlier.
At 7:38 p.m., three minutes before Mia entered the hallway, a shadow moved across the frosted glass of the back door.
Someone had come into the house.
The timestamp showed that the back door had opened.
But I knew I had locked it before dinner.
I enlarged the image.
A hand reached into view.
The door opened from the outside.
Then a figure entered the kitchen.
The camera caught only part of the person's face.
I leaned closer.
I knew that coat.
I knew those shoulders.
And when the figure turned toward the hallway, the monitor revealed the face of someone who should never have been in my house that evening.
Someone who had been dead for eleven months.
I stopped breathing.
May you like
Because the man on the screen was Margaret's younger brother, Richard.
And Richard had been buried the previous winter.
