Chapter 2: The Recording My Son Was Afraid to See
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The little red indicator on the security camera blinked above our heads.
Mia stared at it as if the device had a gun pointed at her.
Daniel rubbed his palm against his trousers. The hand that had struck me was trembling now, but he kept his voice steady.
“Dad, turn it off.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because this is a family matter.””
“You called me an attacker in my own house. You hit me in my own hallway. And now you want me to turn off the only thing that can tell us what happened?””
“I'm asking you to show some respect.””
I almost laughed.
Respect.
The word sounded absurd coming from a man who had just slapped his seventy-year-old father without asking a single question.
Claire moved closer to me.
“Dad, are you hurt?””
“Only my pride.””
She touched my cheek gently.
“It's already swelling.””
Daniel threw up his hands.
“Can we stop pretending I'm the villain here? My wife is standing in torn clothing, crying, and Dad is acting like the victim because he installed a camera without telling anyone.””
Mia grabbed his arm.
“Daniel, please.””
He turned to her.
“What?””
“Don't make this worse.””
“Worse?”” His voice cracked.
“Mia, you told me he attacked you. I'm trying to understand what happened.””
“No, you're not.””
The words escaped her before she could stop them.
Everyone heard.
Daniel stared at her.
“What did you just say?””
Mia blinked rapidly.
“I mean, I don't want to talk about it here.””
“Then where do you want to talk about it?””
She glanced at the camera again.
I had spent most of my life watching people under pressure. Running a construction company had taught me that a person's first reaction was often more honest than anything they said afterward.
Mia wasn't afraid of me.
She was afraid of the recording.
And Daniel was beginning to realize that those were two very different things.
“I'm going to check the footage,” I said.
Daniel stepped into my path.
“No.””
The word came out so forcefully that Claire recoiled.
I looked at my son.
“Move.””
“Dad, listen to me. We don't need to drag the children into this. We can settle this privately.””
“The children are downstairs. They don't know anything.””
“Exactly. Let's keep it that way.””
“Then stop standing between me and the truth.””
His jaw tightened.
For one moment, I thought he might hit me again.
Instead, he leaned close enough for me to smell the wine on his breath.
“If you show that footage, don't expect things to go back to normal.””
I looked into his eyes.
“Daniel, things stopped being normal when you decided I was guilty before you knew what had happened.””
He stepped aside.
I walked past him toward my bedroom.
My hands shook as I opened the door.
Not from fear.
From the terrible realization that I might discover something worse than a false accusation.
I might discover that my son knew exactly what his wife had planned.
The security system was connected to a small monitor in my office. I kept the recordings on a local drive, separate from the cameras themselves, because I had spent thirty-five years managing contracts and had learned never to trust a single copy of anything important.
I sat at the desk and opened the footage.
Daniel, Claire, and Mia crowded into the room behind me.
Mia remained near the door.
She wouldn't come any closer.
The first recording showed me entering the upstairs hallway at 8:47 p.m.
I watched myself turn toward the window.
I watched Mia spin around.
I watched her smile.
Then I saw what happened next.
Mia looked directly at the camera.
Not once.
Three times.
She lifted her right hand and touched her necklace.
Then she glanced down the staircase.
Then she looked at the camera again.
I leaned toward the screen.
“What is she doing?”” Claire whispered.
“Keep watching,” I said.
Mia stepped toward me.
The footage had no sound, but I could see her mouth moving.
I could see her reach for her blouse.
Then, without a single touch from me, she ripped the fabric open.
She pulled at her hair.
She threw herself to the floor.
And she screamed.
The entire performance unfolded in less than twenty seconds.
Nobody spoke when the clip ended.
I replayed it.
This time, Daniel stepped closer to the screen.
“Go back,” he said.
I rewound the recording.
“Right there,” he whispered.
Mia's hand was at her necklace.
Daniel looked at his wife.
“Why did you touch your necklace?””
She swallowed.
“I don't know.””
“You looked straight at the camera.””
“I didn't know it was there!””
“You looked at it three times.””
“I was scared!””
Daniel turned back to the monitor.
“You weren't even near Dad when you tore your blouse.””
Mia's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Claire folded her arms.
“You accused Dad of attacking you when the recording shows you doing it yourself.””
“You don't understand,” Mia snapped.
“Then explain it.””
Mia looked at me.
For the first time that night, her expression held no tears, no fear, and no pretense of politeness.
Only anger.
“You shouldn't have installed those cameras.””
The words landed harder than any confession.
I sat back in my chair.
“There it is.””
Daniel looked between us.
“Mia, what is going on?””
She began shaking her head.
“You're all making this into something it isn't.””
“What isn't it?”” Claire demanded.
“You destroyed your own clothes and accused our father of assaulting you.””
“I was trying to protect myself!””
“From what?””
Mia's eyes darted toward Daniel.
Then she said something I didn't expect.
“Ask your father what he's been hiding in this house.””
The room went silent.
Daniel turned toward me.
“What is she talking about?””
“I have no idea.””
Mia laughed bitterly.
“Of course you don't.””
She took a step toward the desk and pointed at the screen.
“You think this recording proves everything? It proves what happened in that hallway. It doesn't prove what happened before.””
“Then tell us,” I said.
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because you won't believe me.””
I gestured toward the monitor.
“You just watched yourself manufacture an accusation. Forgive me if I'm not eager to take your word for anything.””
Her face flushed.
“You've always treated me like an outsider.””
“I invited you into my family.””
“You tolerated me. That's different.””
Claire shook her head in disbelief.
“This is about that?””
Mia ignored her.
“For eight years, I've watched you all treat this house like a shrine to Margaret. Her pictures, her furniture, her recipes. Every room belongs to her. Even after she's been dead for five years.””
I looked at the framed photograph on my desk.
Margaret stood in front of our first house, her hair blown across her face, laughing at something I had said.
“This house belonged to both of us,” I replied.
“And it still belongs to me.””
“Exactly,” Mia said.
“To you.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“Mia, stop.””
She turned on him.
“No, I'm tired of pretending. You complain about your father every time we talk about money. You say he's sitting on a fortune while we struggle to pay our bills.””
Daniel went pale.
I looked at my son.
“Is that true?””
“Dad, that's not—”
“Do you tell your wife that I'm sitting on a fortune?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“We've had financial problems. You know that.””
“I know you bought a new SUV last spring.””
“That was financed.””
“And the vacation in Florida?””
“Dad, please.””
“And the expensive watch you wore to dinner?””
Daniel glanced at his wrist.
For the first time, I noticed that he wasn't wearing the watch he usually wore.
Mia crossed her arms.
“You see? Nobody wants to talk about the money.””
I felt a coldness spread through my chest.
“What money, Mia?””
She looked at Daniel again.
He shook his head almost imperceptibly.
She ignored him.
“The money your wife left behind.””
I stared at her.
“Margaret left me the house, her personal belongings, and a modest investment account. There was no fortune.””
Mia gave a small, humorless smile.
“That's what you've told everyone.””
“Because it's the truth.””
“Then why did Daniel find the paperwork?””
Daniel suddenly moved toward her.
“Enough!””
The force of his voice made her flinch.
But I had already heard what she said.
I stood.
“What paperwork?””
Neither of them answered.
I looked at Daniel.
“Son, what paperwork?””
He stared at the floor.
“Dad, we should discuss this another time.””
“No. We should discuss it now.””
Mia walked toward the door.
“I need to leave.””
“You're not leaving until you explain why you accused me of a crime,” I said.
She stopped.
“You can't keep me here.””
“I have no intention of keeping you anywhere. But the recording is saved, and I won't allow you to tell people I attacked you without showing them the truth.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You'd destroy your own son's marriage to save your reputation?””
I felt something inside me break.
“You destroyed my reputation when you lied.””
Daniel stepped between us.
“Dad, stop talking to her like that.””
I stared at him.
“After what she just did?””
“She made a mistake!””
“A mistake is spilling wine. This was a deliberate accusation.””
He looked away.
Mia seized the opportunity.
“Daniel, let's go.””
He hesitated.
Then he looked at the monitor one last time.
His expression was no longer angry.
It was calculating.
“Dad,” he said slowly, “I want you to delete that recording.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Why?””
“Because if it gets out, it will ruin Mia's life.””
“What about mine?””
He didn't answer.
“What about the fact that you hit me?””
His face twisted.
“I lost control.””
“You believed a lie without giving me a chance to speak.””
“She was crying!””
“And the camera shows you exactly why she was crying.””
He took a long breath.
“Dad, I'm asking you as your son.””
I looked at him for a long moment.
Then I turned back to the computer and made a second copy of the recording.
I saved it to an external drive.
Then I uploaded another copy to a secure account.
Daniel watched me.
“What are you doing?””
“Making sure the truth doesn't disappear.””
Mia's face went white.
She looked at Daniel, and something passed between them that I couldn't understand.
It wasn't surprise.
It was recognition.
As though I had just ruined a plan that had taken months to prepare.
Daniel grabbed his wife's arm.
“We're leaving.””
Claire followed them into the hallway.
I stayed in the office, listening to the front door slam.
A few seconds later, Claire returned alone.
“Dad?””
I turned toward her.
“What's wrong?””
She looked as if she had seen a ghost.
“I heard Daniel talking to Mia outside.””
“What did he say?””
Claire swallowed.
“He told her the recording wasn't the problem.””
I waited.
She stepped closer and lowered her voice.
“He said, 'The camera caught the wrong part. We need to find the other file before he does.''”
My blood ran cold.
“What other file?””
Claire shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Then she reached into her pocket and placed something on my desk.
A small brass key.
“I found this in Mia's coat when she dropped it on the stairs.””
I recognized it immediately.
It was the key to Margaret's old writing desk.
The desk I had kept locked since the week she died.
The desk that contained the documents from our final months together.

And when I saw the thin strip of white paper attached to the key, I realized someone had written a message on it.
Ask Thomas about the second will.
