Chapter 1: The Secret Behind the Locked Cabinet

“Have a good day, honey!””

Vanessa said those words with the same warm smile she had given me every morning for twelve years. Then she kissed my cheek, watched me walk to my car, and waited until I started backing out of the driveway before turning toward the lawn guy and winking at him.

By the time I discovered why, another man had already been inside my bedroom, and the woman I thought I knew was about to reveal that her betrayal went far beyond an affair.

My name is Michael Bennett. I was forty-three, married to Vanessa for twelve years, and living in a comfortable two-story house outside Atlanta, Georgia. I worked as an operations manager for a commercial construction company. Vanessa managed a small interior design business from home, which meant she spent more time in our house than I did.

I used to think that was a good thing.

I liked knowing she was there when I came home. I liked the smell of coffee drifting from the kitchen, the little notes she left beside my lunch, and the way she tucked her feet beneath my legs when we watched television.

We weren't rich, but we were comfortable. We had a mortgage, retirement accounts, a joint savings account, and a garage full of things we'd promised ourselves we'd organize someday.

We also had a locked metal cabinet in the garage.

That cabinet belonged to my father, who had died four years earlier. Before his death, he'd asked me to keep several documents and personal belongings safe until I needed them. I had placed everything inside, locked it, and forgotten about it.

Or so I thought.

That Tuesday morning began like any other.

Vanessa stood on the porch in the blue sweater I'd bought her for our anniversary. The morning air smelled of freshly cut grass and the coffee she'd made before I woke up.

"Don't work too hard today," she said, straightening the collar of my shirt.

"I'll try. Mr. Collins has been threatening to make me redo the Westbrook schedule.""

"Your boss has been threatening that since Christmas."" She smiled.

"Maybe one day you'll learn to ignore him.""

"Maybe one day he'll learn to retire.""

She laughed and kissed me.

I believed that kiss.

I believed everything.

"Love you," I told her.

"Love you more.""

I climbed into my car, set my work bag on the passenger seat, and backed down the driveway.

That's when I noticed Ryan.

He stood beside his mower near the sidewalk, wearing his usual work boots and a gray company shirt. He was twenty-eight, tall, athletic, and friendly enough that I'd never thought twice about leaving him alone with Vanessa.

He'd been maintaining our lawn for nearly a year.

Vanessa had recommended him after complaining that our previous landscaping company had ruined the flower beds.

A few months later, she'd suggested giving him a key to the side gate so he could access the backyard without bothering us.

Then she'd asked me to let him keep a spare house key because, according to her, he'd occasionally need to check the irrigation controls inside the garage.

I remembered hesitating.

"Doesn't he have a company key?"" I'd asked.

"Michael, it's just a key," she'd replied.

"You trust me, don't you?""

I had laughed and handed it over.

Now, as I pulled away, I saw Vanessa turn toward Ryan.

She glanced up and down the street.

Then she winked.

Ryan smiled and walked toward our front door.

Vanessa opened it before he even reached the steps.

I watched them disappear inside through my rearview mirror.

For a moment, something uncomfortable stirred in my stomach.

Then I shook my head.

"Don't be paranoid," I muttered.

Five minutes later, I discovered I'd left my laptop on the kitchen counter.

I swore, made a U-turn, and headed home.

When I pulled into the driveway, Ryan's mower sat motionless beside the lawn.

The engine was off.

That was strange. He usually worked until noon.

I parked, hurried inside, and called out.

"Vanessa? I forgot my laptop!""

No answer.

I heard something upstairs.

A laugh.

Then a man's voice.

My stomach tightened.

I walked toward the stairs, trying to convince myself there was an innocent explanation. Maybe Ryan had come inside to discuss the sprinkler system. Maybe Vanessa was showing him something for her business.

Then I heard another laugh.

This time, it came from our bedroom.

I pushed the door open.

Vanessa sat on our bed, kissing Ryan.

His shirt lay on the floor beside my shoes. Her hand rested on his neck, and she was smiling against his mouth in a way I hadn't seen in months.

Not a hesitant kiss.

Not a mistake.

They looked comfortable.

Practiced.

"What the HELL is going on?""

Vanessa jerked backward.

"Michael!""

Ryan jumped to his feet, grabbing for his shirt.

"Sir, I can explain.""

I stared at him.

"Explain why you're half-dressed in my bedroom?""

He opened his mouth, then shut it.

Vanessa snatched a robe from the chair.

"Michael, please. Just calm down.""

"Calm down?"" I repeated.

"You brought another man into our bed!""

Tears filled her eyes.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like this.""

"How long?""

She looked at the carpet.

"Vanessa, look at me.""

Her chin trembled.

"Six months.""

Six months.

I thought about every late meeting, every dinner she'd cooked, every time she'd kissed me goodnight while another man's name sat hidden inside her phone.

I turned toward Ryan.

"Get out.""

"Mr. Bennett—"

"Get out of my house before I forget that I'm trying to handle this like an adult.""

He pulled on his shirt, grabbed his boots, and hurried past me.

Vanessa reached for my arm.

I stepped away.

"Don't touch me.""

"Michael, I know I made a terrible mistake.""

"Was giving him a key part of the mistake? Or was that the plan?""

Her face changed.

It was only a fraction of a second, but I saw it.

Fear.

"What are you talking about?"" she asked.

"Three months ago, you insisted he needed access to the garage. You practically begged me to give him a key.""

"That was for the yard.""

"Then why do you look terrified when I mention it?""

She began crying harder.

I wanted to believe there was an explanation. I wanted her to say something that would make the last five minutes disappear.

Instead, she whispered, "You don't understand.""

"Then help me understand.""

She looked toward the bedroom door.

Before she could speak, my phone rang.

It was Mrs. Carter, our seventy-year-old neighbor. She lived across the street and knew everything that happened within a three-house radius.

"Hello?""

"Michael, honey, are you home?""

"Yes. Why?""

Her voice lowered.

"There's something I should have told you about Ryan.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"What about him?""

"I've seen him coming to your house almost every weekday. Sometimes he comes before you leave. Sometimes he comes back after you drive away.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"I know about the affair.""

"Oh, sweetheart."" She sounded genuinely distressed.

"That's not why I'm calling.""

My heartbeat quickened.

"What do you mean?""

"Yesterday afternoon, I saw Vanessa and Ryan carrying boxes out of your garage.""

I glanced toward the hallway.

"What boxes?""

"The ones from that locked metal cabinet. The one your father made you put a padlock on.""

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

My father's cabinet hadn't been opened in four years. I had never given Vanessa its key.

"Are you sure?"" I finally asked.

"Positive. Ryan carried two boxes to his truck. Vanessa carried another. They kept looking over their shoulders.""

I turned toward the garage door.

"Why didn't you tell me yesterday?""

"I thought perhaps you knew. But this morning, I saw Ryan arrive again, and then I noticed something else.""

"What?""

Mrs. Carter took a shaky breath.

"Vanessa was holding a document with your name on it. She was crying, Michael. And Ryan told her, 'If he finds out what's inside that cabinet, we're finished.''"

I stared at my wife.

She had stopped crying.

Now she was watching me with an expression I'd never seen before.

Not guilt.

Not shame.

Calculation.

I lowered the phone.

"Vanessa, what did you take from my father's cabinet?""

Her lips parted.

Then the garage door creaked open downstairs.

A man's voice called from inside.

"Vanessa? I got the rest of it.""

May you like

Ryan was back.

And this time, he hadn't come alone.
