Chapter 6: The Secret Emily Took To Her Grave

I read Sarah’s message over and over.

The words didn’t change.

*The thing Emily never told Marcus.*

It was the kind of sentence designed to create doubt.

And it worked.

For one terrible moment, a part of me wondered.

What had Emily hidden?

What did Sarah know?

What was the truth?

Then I looked at the cedar box sitting on the table.

I looked at my son sleeping upstairs.

And I remembered something important.

Emily had spent years showing me who she was.

Sarah had spent years telling me who Emily was.

There was a difference.

The next morning, I drove to Rachel’s house.

I needed answers.

Not rumors.

Not threats.

Answers.

Rachel opened the door before I knocked twice.

She looked tired.

Like she had been carrying a secret for years.

“Come in.””

I stepped inside.

The walls were covered with pictures.

Most of them were Emily.

Young.

Smiling.

Alive.

I stopped in front of one photo.

Emily was holding Michael as a baby.

She looked exhausted.

But happy.

Rachel watched me.

“You miss her.””

I nodded.

“Every day.””

She looked down.

“Then you need to know the whole story.””

We sat at her kitchen table.

Rachel placed a small envelope in front of me.

My heart stopped.

“Another letter?””

She nodded.

“Emily gave this to me three days before she died.””

I didn’t touch it.

“Why didn’t you give it to me sooner?””

Rachel looked away.

“Because she asked me not to.””

“Why?””

“Because she was afraid you would read it while you were grieving.””

I stared at the envelope.

“What does it say?””

Rachel took a breath.

“It explains what happened with Sarah.””

I opened it.

The handwriting was the same.

But this time, I was ready.

Or I thought I was.

*Marcus,*

*There is something I need to tell you.*

I stopped.

Because I knew.

I knew this was the moment everything changed.

*Sarah came to the hospital after you left one night.*

My hands tightened.

*She told me she loved you. She told me she wanted to be part of your life.*

I continued.

*At first, I was not angry. I understood. I knew my time was ending.*

Then:

*But she told me something that scared me.*

I looked at Rachel.

“What?””

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“She threatened Emily.””

I froze.

I looked back at the letter.

*She told me that if I did not convince you to move forward with her, she would make sure Michael grew up believing I was the reason our family was broken.*

I stopped reading.

The kitchen became silent.

“She threatened a dying woman?””

Rachel nodded.

“She said Emily was manipulating you by staying sick.””

My hands shook.

I continued.

*Marcus, I do not want you to hate her. Hate is a heavy thing to carry. But I need you to understand that Michael needs protection from people who confuse their pain with permission to hurt others.*

I closed my eyes.

Emily.

Even now.

Still trying to save everyone.

The final paragraph made my breath catch.

*There is one more thing. Sarah told me she knew about the accident. She said she knew something about the night I got sick that you didn’t know.*

My eyes moved quickly.

*I don’t know if she was telling the truth. I don’t know if she was trying to scare me. But if she ever uses this against you, remember this: the truth is not something to fear.*

I looked up.

“The accident?””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“Marcus…”

“What accident?””

She hesitated.

“Before Emily got sick, there was a car accident.””

“I know.””

Rachel looked at me.

“No.””

The way she said it made my stomach drop.

“You know there was an accident.””

She leaned forward.

“But you don’t know why it happened.””

My heart started pounding.

“What are you saying?””

Rachel looked toward the window.

“Emily was driving home from meeting someone.””

“Who?””

Rachel looked back at me.

“Sarah.””

I stood.

“What?””

Rachel’s voice was barely a whisper.

“Emily never told you because she didn’t want you to hate Sarah.””

The room spun.

“Are you saying Sarah caused Emily’s accident?””

“No.””

Rachel shook her head quickly.

“I’m saying Sarah was there before it happened.””

I stared at her.

My entire body went cold.

“Why?””

Rachel looked at the unopened envelope again.

“Because there was something Sarah wanted from Emily.””

“What?””

Rachel swallowed.

“The one thing Emily refused to give her.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Marcus?””

“Who is this?””

“My name is Daniel.””

I frowned.

“Daniel who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Daniel Harris. I was the police officer who responded to Emily’s accident.””

I froze.

“Why are you calling me?””

His voice became serious.

“Because I saw something in the original report that was never followed up.””

My grip tightened.

“What?””

The officer lowered his voice.

“Your wife’s accident may not have been an accident.””

I looked at Rachel.

She already knew.

Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.

“Marcus, there was another person at the scene that night.””

May you like

A pause.

“A woman named Sarah.””
