Chapter 8: The Name On The Document
Claire was waiting when I arrived.
She didn’t offer coffee.
She didn’t ask how I was.
She simply handed me a document.
“Nathan.””
The way she said my name scared me.
“What is it?””
She looked at the paper.
“This was sealed with your mother’s trust.””
I unfolded it.
At first, I didn’t understand what I was seeing.
Then I saw the name.
My name.
But not alone.
Another name was listed beside mine.
A name I had never seen before.
“What is this?””
Claire sat down.
“Your mother created a second account.””
“A second trust?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She took a breath.
“Because she discovered something about your family history.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She pushed another document toward me.
A birth record.
I looked at it.
Then looked again.
Something was wrong.
The father’s name.
It wasn’t Robert Miller.
My hands went numb.
“No.””
Claire didn’t speak.
“No.””
I looked up.
“This is wrong.””
She shook her head.
“Nathan…”
“My dad is my father.””
She didn’t answer.
Because she knew.
I read the document again.
The name beside “father.””
A stranger.
A man I had never heard of.
My entire life suddenly felt like a story someone else wrote.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Claire’s voice was gentle.
“Because your mother wanted to tell you herself.””
“But she died.””
“Yes.””
“And my father knew?””
Claire looked away.
That was enough.
I stood up.
“He knew.””
“Yes.””
I grabbed my jacket.
“Nathan—”
“No.””
My voice was shaking.
Not with anger.
Something worse.
Confusion.
Pain.
I drove straight to my father’s house.
He opened the door.
And the second he saw my face, he knew.
“You found it.””
I stared at him.
“You knew.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The word destroyed something inside me.
“How long?””
“Since before you were born.””
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“Then who am I?””
My father looked broken.
“You’re my son.””
I laughed.
A painful laugh.
“You just said you knew.””
“I raised you.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
He looked at me.
“You’re my son, Nathan.””
“But not by blood.””
Silence.
Behind him, Karen appeared.
She heard.
Her face changed.
I turned toward her.
“You knew.””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
All those years.
All those secrets.
All those choices.
Everyone knew except me.
My father whispered:
“I loved you.””
I looked at him.
“Then why did you make me feel like I was never yours?””
He had no answer.
And maybe that was the cruelest part.
Because some questions don’t hurt because they’re unanswered.
They hurt because everyone already knows the answer.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Claire.
One sentence.
There’s one more page from your mother’s letter. I think you need to read it before you decide what happens next.
I stared at the screen.
Then back at the man who raised me.
The man who broke me.
May you like
The man who still looked like my father.
And I wondered what my mother had left behind that could possibly change everything.
