Chapter 8: The Woman Who Owned the Truth

Clara entered the chapel slowly.

No fear.

No panic.

Just confidence.

Behind her stood several men in dark suits.

Damon immediately understood.

This was not a rescue.

It was a capture.

“Where is Lily?”” Damon demanded.

Clara smiled.

“You always go straight to the child.””

“Because unlike you, I remember she’s a person.””

Clara sighed.

“You really are your mother’s son.””

Damon stepped forward.

“Where is she?””

“Safe.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

His voice hardened.

“And somehow every time someone says it, a child disappears.””

Clara looked at Margaret.

“You betrayed us.””

Margaret stared at her.

“I protected them.””

“No.””

Clara shook her head.

“You protected your guilt.””

Damon watched them carefully.

There was history here.

A lot of it.

“What are you talking about?””

Clara looked at him.

“You still think Margaret is the hero?””

Damon said nothing.

“Interesting.””

Clara smiled.

“She never told you everything.””

Margaret’s face tightened.

“Don’t.””

“Why?””

Clara looked amused.

“He deserves to know.””

Damon looked between them.

“Know what?””

Clara stepped closer.

“Your mother didn’t just hide Lily.””

The pause was deliberate.

“She stole her.””

Damon froze.

“What?””

Margaret looked away.

Clara continued.

“When Robert discovered your half-sister existed, he planned to send her away permanently.””

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

Damon looked at Margaret.

“Is it?””

Margaret didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“Where did she take Lily?””

Margaret whispered:

“Away from him.””

Clara laughed.

“You mean away from her family.””

Damon stared.

“She was protecting her.””

“Was she?””

Clara’s expression turned cold.

“Or was she protecting the Cross name?””

The question hurt because Damon didn’t know.

And he hated that.

All his life, he had believed his mother was the one person who never lied to him.

Now every memory had shadows.

Clara stepped closer.

“You want to know why Lily was at the gala?””

Damon looked at her.

“Tell me.””

“Because someone wanted you to discover the inheritance.””

“What inheritance?””

“The one Robert left.””

Damon’s eyes narrowed.

“The company?””

“No.””

Clara smiled.

“The evidence.””

A chill went through him.

“What evidence?””

“Everything Robert did.””

The chapel seemed colder.

“Your grandfather kept records.””

“Of what?””

“Everything.””

Clara looked at Margaret.

“Every payment. Every secret deal. Every child he erased.””

Damon stared.

“Why?””

“Because powerful people always believe they can control the truth.””

Clara looked at him.

“Until they need to protect themselves.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Damon turned.

“Why?””

Margaret’s eyes filled with pain.

“Because she helped him.””

The room went silent.

Clara’s expression didn’t change.

Damon looked at Clara.

“You worked with my grandfather?””

“Yes.””

The answer was simple.

Cold.

“How?””

“I managed his private foundation.””

Damon remembered.

The charity.

The children.

The missing funds.

Everything connected.

“You were supposed to help them.””

“I did.””

“No.””

Damon shook his head.

“You used them.””

Clara’s face hardened.

“Your grandfather taught me one thing.””

“What?””

“People don’t care about the truth.””

She looked around.

“They care about feeling like they’re good people.””

Damon hated that part of him understood.

The gala.

The cameras.

The speeches.

The expensive dresses.

A room full of people celebrating kindness while ignoring the child standing in front of them.

Clara continued:

“Robert built a system. I maintained it.””

“And Adrian?””

“My assistant.””

Damon felt sick.

“How many children?””

Clara looked away.

“More than you know.””

The answer was enough.

Damon stepped forward.

“Where is Lily?””

Clara stared at him.

“You really won’t stop.””

“No.””

“Even if the truth destroys your family?””

Damon looked at her.

“Maybe it deserves to be destroyed.””

For the first time, Clara looked surprised.

Then angry.

“You sound exactly like your mother.””

Damon’s phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

He opened it.

A video.

Lily sitting in a room.

Crying.

A man standing beside her.

Damon froze.

Because he recognized the man.

Adrian.

But the next thing Lily said made his entire world collapse.

“Damon…”

Her voice shook.

“I found Mom’s letter.””

The video continued.

“She wrote your name.””

Damon leaned closer.

Then Lily whispered:

“She said you were the one person she trusted.””

The video ended.

Damon looked up.

Clara was watching him.

“She’s not the only one who knows the truth.””

Damon’s voice was barely audible.

“Where is my sister?””

May you like

Clara smiled.

“Where your family buried everything.””
