Chapter 5: My Father's Secret Signature

I read the name three times.

Daniel Parker.

My father's name.

The email stated that he had submitted an application to transfer temporary management authority over the Mercer Street property to RMP Holdings. The request had been received that afternoon, shortly before our meeting with the trustee.

Dad stared at the screen as if it were a weapon pointed at his chest.

“I didn't send this.””

Rachel took a step toward him.

“Daniel—”

“Don't.””

He turned the phone over in his hand.

“I did not authorize this transfer.””

I believed him.

At least, I wanted to.

But the document attached to the email contained his signature, his address, and his personal identification number.

It looked real.

And the timestamp showed that the request had been submitted while we were sitting in Margaret's office.

I reached for his hand.

“Dad, tell me what happened.””

He looked at me with an expression I couldn't read.

“I don't know.””

Rachel's voice became strangely gentle.

“Perhaps you signed something without realizing what it was.””

Dad snapped his head toward her.

“You know that's not true.””

“I'm only trying to understand.””

“No. You're trying to find an explanation that makes this look like an innocent mistake.””

Rachel's eyes filled with tears.

“After everything I've done for this family, you think I'd deliberately hurt Claire?””

I looked at the blackened fabric still lying in the corner of my bedroom, visible through the open doorway.

“Yes,” I said quietly.

Rachel turned toward me.

I held her gaze.

“You already did.””

For once, she had nothing to say.

Dad called Margaret again.

She answered immediately, and he explained what had happened. Her response was swift.

“Do not sign anything else. Do not contact the company. I'm sending an emergency notice to the trustee and requesting that the transfer be blocked.””

“What if it has already gone through?”” Dad asked.

“Then we'll challenge it. But I need to know whether your signature is genuine.””

“It isn't.””

“Good. Preserve the email exactly as it arrived. Don't forward it or delete it. I'll have our technical consultant examine the message headers.””

Dad ended the call.

Mia stood at the foot of the stairs, holding her phone with both hands.

“Dad?””

He looked at her.

“Did you know about this?””

“No.””

“Did you sign any documents connected to RMP Holdings?””

“No!””

Her answer came so quickly that I almost believed her.

Then she looked at her mother.

“Mom, please tell me you didn't use Dad's signature.””

Rachel pressed her fingers against her temples.

“I didn't know the application would be submitted today.””

The room went silent.

Dad stepped toward her.

“What did you just say?””

Rachel lowered her hands.

“I said I didn't know it would be submitted today.””

“You knew about the application?””

“I knew Thomas was preparing paperwork.””

“You told me this was about helping Mia get settled!””

“It was!””

“Then why was my signature on a property transfer?””

Rachel's voice rose.

“Because Thomas said it was temporary! He said the company needed authority to negotiate with a buyer, and that no sale would happen without your consent.””

“That is not what the document says.””

“I didn't read every page.””

Dad laughed once, without humor.

“You didn't read every page of a document that could transfer control of your daughter's inheritance?””

Rachel's face hardened.

“You keep saying it's Claire's property as if nobody else in this family matters.””

“It belongs to Claire.””

“And what about Mia?””

“Mia can build her own future without taking what belongs to her sister.””

Mia flinched.

Rachel turned toward her daughter.

“Don't look at me like that.””

Mia's eyes filled again.

“You told me I was going to have my own apartment. You said everything was arranged.””

“I was trying to give you something good.””

“With money from Claire's inheritance?””

Rachel didn't answer.

Mia backed away.

“Oh my God.””

She covered her mouth.

I wanted to feel vindicated. I wanted to watch her finally understand how it felt to discover that someone you trusted had been lying to you.

Instead, I felt a dull ache.

Because Mia was still my stepsister.

And even after everything she had done to me, I didn't want her to become another casualty of Rachel's choices.

“Did you know about the forged signature?”” I asked.

Mia shook her head.

“No.””

“Did you know Mom was trying to transfer the property?””

“No!””

She wiped her cheeks.

“I thought she was talking to Dad about money for the apartment. I didn't know about any of this.””

Rachel moved toward her.

“Sweetheart, listen to me.””

Mia stepped back.

“Don't call me that.””

Rachel stopped.

The words seemed to take the air out of her.

Dad walked into his study and returned with a small metal box. He placed it on the kitchen table and unlocked it.

Inside were old bank statements, letters, and a stack of photographs.

He pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“This is the original notice from the bank when Elena's account was accessed without authorization.””

He placed it beside the transfer request.

“The first suspicious transaction happened years ago. The bank rejected it because the authorization didn't match Elena's records.””

Rachel stared at the document.

“Why do you still have that?””

“Because Elena asked me to keep it.””

He unfolded another paper.

“This is a note she wrote me the day before she died.””

I leaned closer.

The handwriting was unmistakably my mother's.

Daniel, if Thomas returns, do not let him persuade you that family loyalty requires silence. If he has made another attempt to access my accounts, protect Claire first. She must never pay for the mistakes of the adults around her.

My throat tightened.

Dad had to stop reading.

He rubbed his eyes and continued.

“Elena knew her brother might try again. She didn't know when or how, but she was worried enough to leave instructions with the trustee.””

Rachel sank into a chair.

For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.

“I didn't know about that letter.””

Dad looked at her.

“Did Thomas tell you about the first attempted transfer?””

Rachel's lips parted.

Then she whispered, “Yes.””

Mia stared at her mother.

“You knew?””

Rachel began shaking her head.

“He told me it had been a misunderstanding. He said Elena had accused him because she didn't want to help him financially.””

“You believed him?”” I asked.

“He said he was trying to repair the relationship.””

“By taking money from a dying woman's account?””

“He said he had a legitimate claim!””

Dad slammed his hand against the table.

“Enough!””

The sound made all three of us jump.

He had never shouted at Rachel like that before.

“You listened to a man who had already been suspected of trying to steal from my wife, and you helped him target my daughter. Don't stand there and tell me you thought it was harmless.””

Rachel's eyes filled.

“I thought he was telling the truth.””

“Then why hide it from me?””

She looked down.

There it was.

The answer she couldn't give.

Dad picked up his phone.

“I'm going to the police.””

Rachel stood so quickly that her chair scraped across the tile.

“Daniel, please. Think about what this will do to Mia.””

Mia looked up.

“Stop using me.””

Rachel froze.

Mia wiped her face with her sleeve.

“Every time something goes wrong, you tell people you're doing it for me. You told Dad I needed the apartment. You told Claire she was selfish for wanting her own things. And now you're saying you did all this because you wanted to help me?””

Her voice broke.

“I never asked you to steal anything.””

Rachel reached for her.

Mia recoiled.

“Don't touch me.””

I watched Rachel's face collapse.

For a brief moment, I felt sorry for her.

Then I remembered the dress.

The flames.

The way she had stood in my doorway and told me not to ruin everyone's day.

Compassion didn't mean pretending the damage hadn't happened.

Dad left the kitchen to speak privately with Margaret.

I followed him into the hallway.

“Dad?””

He turned.

“I'm sorry you have to see all this.””

I shook my head.

“I need to ask you something.””

“Anything.””

“Why did the transfer request use your signature?””

His expression changed.

He looked toward the study, where the metal box sat open on his desk.

“Someone must have copied it from an old document.””

“Could Rachel have accessed your files?””

“Yes.””

“Could Thomas?””

“Not without help.””

I hesitated.

“Dad, is there anything else you haven't told me?””

He looked as if I'd struck him.

“Claire—”

“I'm not asking because I think you're guilty. I'm asking because I need to know whether there's something that could hurt us later.””

He took my hands.

“There is one thing.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“About six months ago, Rachel asked me to sign a document related to our household finances. She said it was an updated insurance authorization. I signed it without reading every page because I trusted her.””

“Do you have a copy?””

“I found one in my study this morning.””

He went to his desk and returned with a photocopy.

At the top was the name of an insurance company.

But beneath the title, in smaller print, was a clause authorizing the use of certain financial records to verify household assets.

The signature at the bottom was his.

I stared at it.

“Could this have been used to get your information?””

“Possibly.””

“Why didn't you tell Margaret?””

“I didn't realize it was connected until now.””

I looked toward the kitchen.

Rachel was standing alone by the counter. Mia had disappeared upstairs.

“Dad, I think we need to find out exactly what Rachel gave Thomas.””

He nodded.

“We will.””

Just then, his phone rang.

The caller was Margaret.

He answered on speaker.

“Daniel, I have an update. The trustee has blocked the attempted transfer, but the company submitted additional documentation. One of those documents claims that Claire agreed to sell her beneficial interest for a payment of $250,000.””

My heart pounded.

“Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars?”” I repeated.

“Yes,” Margaret said.

“The agreement states that the money was paid into an account designated by Claire.””

“I never received any money.””

“I believe you. But we need to identify that account immediately.””

Dad's voice sharpened.

“Who owns it?””

Margaret paused.

“We've requested the banking information. There's one detail you should know.””

“What?””

“The agreement was witnessed by someone who claims to have seen Claire sign it.””

I closed my eyes.

Another witness.

Another lie.

Margaret continued.

“The witness is your stepdaughter, Mia Parker.””

I stared toward the staircase.

May you like

Dad went silent.

And somewhere upstairs, a door slammed.
