Chapter 4: The Woman Who Owned Their Future

I read my grandfather's letter six times before sunrise.

By the seventh reading, I had stopped shaking.

By the eighth, I understood why Graham Mercer had spent so many years treating me like a daughter-in-law rather than an outsider.

He hadn't simply wanted me married to his son.

He had wanted me inside the family.

And he'd wanted me there without knowing what I actually owned.

At 8:15 Saturday morning, Beatrix arrived at my apartment carrying two leather folders and a large coffee.

She took one look at the letter spread across my kitchen table.

"Tell me you haven't contacted anyone.""

"I haven't.""

"Good.""

She placed the folders down.

"We need to discuss your grandfather's trust.""

I poured her coffee.

"Start with the part you haven't told me.""

She opened the first folder.

"Your grandfather invested in Mercer Holdings nearly twenty-five years ago, when the company was struggling to finance its commercial property division. His investment came with special voting rights and a succession provision.""

"How special?""

"Your grandfather retained controlling authority over the family trust's interest. When he died, that authority transferred to you.""

I stared at her.

"But Roland told me the trust was worth around four million dollars.""

"That was the estimated value of your personal distributions. It wasn't the value of the controlling interest.""

She turned a page.

"Your grandfather's investment has grown considerably. The current valuation of the trust's holdings is approximately forty million dollars.""

I sat down.

Forty million.

I'd spent six years worrying about the cost of fertility treatments while my husband was quietly positioning himself to take control of an inheritance I didn't even know I controlled.

"What does the succession clause mean?""

"It means any transfer of the trust's voting interest requires your approval. It also means the next generation's beneficiary designation must comply with the original trust terms.""

"Can Roland name his son as the heir?""

"Not automatically.""

"But he can try?""

"He already has.""

She slid a document toward me.

It was an application for recognition of a successor beneficiary.

The applicant was Roland Mercer.

The proposed beneficiary was listed as:

*Baby Mercer — unborn male child.*

I stared at the page.

"How did he submit this?""

"Through the family office. The application was marked pending because your authorization was missing.""

I looked at the signature section.

My name had already been typed beneath the approval line.

Only the signature was blank.

"He's planning to get me to sign this at the baby shower.""

"Possibly. Or he intends to pressure you into signing the supplemental release first.""

I shook my head.

"He's expecting me to walk in, congratulate Camille, and behave like the pathetic ex-wife he remembers.""

Beatrix closed the folder.

"Then we should discuss what happens if you don't.""

Before she could continue, my phone rang.

Roland.

I looked at Beatrix.

She nodded toward the phone.

"Put it on speaker. Don't volunteer anything.""

I answered.

"Hello, Roland.""

His voice was warm.

Too warm.

"Evelyn. I'm glad I caught you.""

"Is something wrong?""

"Nothing at all. I just wanted to make sure you were still coming today.""

"I said I would.""

"Good. Camille has been looking forward to seeing you.""

I glanced at the invitation.

"That's kind of her.""

He chuckled.

"She's trying to make peace. You know how sensitive pregnancy can make a woman.""

I said nothing.

Then he continued.

"There's actually something I'd like you to bring.""

"What?""

"Your original trust documents. The ones your grandfather left you.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Why?""

"Family business. Nothing you need to worry about.""

"Then why do you need them?""

His tone changed.

Only slightly.

"I thought we could finally settle a few outstanding matters. Graham would appreciate it.""

"Does Graham know I'm coming?""

"Of course.""

"And he wants the documents?""

"Yes, Evelyn.""

I looked at Beatrix.

She was writing something on her notepad.

"All right," I said.

"Wonderful. And please, wear something appropriate. The photographs will be taken shortly after two.""

"Don't worry, Roland. I'll be appropriately dressed.""

He laughed.

"That's my girl.""

The call ended.

Beatrix slowly lowered her pen.

"He knows about the trust.""

"Of course he does.""

"And he wants the original documents.""

I stood.

"Then let's make sure he gets exactly what he deserves instead.""

At 11:40, I arrived at the Mercer Estate.

The property sat behind iron gates on several acres of manicured grounds. White roses lined the entrance, and a fountain played beneath the afternoon sun.

A large sign beside the driveway read:

*WELCOME TO THE MERCER FAMILY'S LITTLE MIRACLE.*

White balloons floated above the entrance.

Through the glass doors, I could see guests carrying champagne glasses and gift boxes.

I stepped out of the car.

My cream-colored dress fell just below my knees. My grandmother's gold watch caught the sunlight.

I carried one small handbag.

Inside it were three things.

My grandfather's letter.

A copy of the trust documents.

And a certified envelope from Beatrix.

The original documents were safely locked in her office.

I wasn't about to hand the Mercer family anything they could destroy.

A housekeeper opened the front door.

"Mrs. Mercer?""

"Ms. Hayes now.""

The woman immediately looked embarrassed.

"Of course. I'm sorry.""

I smiled.

"Don't worry.""

As I entered, the conversations around the foyer began to fade.

Several guests turned.

A woman in a blue silk dress whispered to another.

"That's her.""

I pretended not to hear.

Then Camille appeared at the top of the staircase.

She wore a flowing white maternity dress, her blonde hair arranged in loose waves. One hand rested protectively on her stomach.

She descended slowly.

"Oh, Evie!""

Her voice was full of excitement.

She opened her arms.

I didn't move.

Her smile faltered.

"You're here.""

"I was invited.""

"Of course. Come here.""

She hugged me anyway.

Her perfume was the same expensive scent that had clung to the invitation.

I remembered her sitting beside me in hospital waiting rooms.

I remembered her holding my hand while doctors discussed my hormone levels.

Now she was smiling for photographs with the child she had conceived with my brother-in-law.

"You're looking lovely," Camille said.

"So are you.""

She tilted her head.

"I was worried you might find today difficult.""

"Why would I?""

Her eyes flickered.

"Oh, you know. With everything that happened.""

I smiled.

"Which part?""

She blinked.

Before she could answer, Roland appeared behind her.

He wore a navy suit and a silver tie.

"There's my favorite guest.""

He kissed Camille's forehead.

Then he turned to me.

"Evelyn. You came.""

"I did.""

His gaze moved toward my handbag.

"Did you bring the documents?""

"Which documents?""

His smile tightened.

"The trust papers.""

"Not yet.""

He leaned closer.

"We should talk privately.""

"After the celebration.""

His jaw shifted.

"Now would be better.""

Camille touched his arm.

"Roland, don't be rude. Let Evelyn have something to drink first.""

Then she looked at me.

"Would you like sparkling water? We don't want you feeling uncomfortable.""

"Water is fine.""

She waved to a server.

As the glass was handed to me, Camille lowered her voice.

"Actually, Evie, there's something I wanted to tell you.""

I waited.

She smiled and placed her hand on her stomach.

"Roland has been wonderful. He's already talking about nursery schools and family holidays.""

"That's lovely.""

"And he's promised our son everything.""

I looked at her.

"Our son?""

Her smile widened.

"Yes. We found out last week.""

I glanced toward Roland.

He was watching us from across the room.

"Congratulations," I said.

Camille moved closer.

"You know, sometimes things happen for a reason. Perhaps you weren't meant to have children with Roland.""

She paused.

"Perhaps you were meant to make room for someone who could.""

For one second, the room disappeared.

I heard the old voice in my head.

Maybe next month, sweetheart.

Every man I know has children.

What am I supposed to tell my father?

Then I looked at Camille's hand resting on her stomach.

And smiled.

"You're right, Camille.""

She looked surprised.

"Really?""

"Absolutely.""

I took a sip of water.

"Some things are better when the truth finally comes out.""

Her smile disappeared.

Before she could respond, a man's voice came from behind us.

"Well, well. The whole family is finally together.""

Graham Mercer.

He approached with a silver walking stick in one hand.

His hair was white, his suit immaculate, and his expression carried the confidence of a man who had never been told no.

He kissed Camille's cheek.

Then he turned to me.

"Evelyn.""

"Mr. Mercer.""

He frowned.

"After all these years, I thought you'd call me Graham.""

"After all these years, I thought you'd tell me the truth.""

His eyes narrowed.

Roland stepped forward.

"Father, perhaps we should begin the announcement.""

Graham looked at Camille's stomach.

Then at the guests gathering near the grand staircase.

"Yes," he said.

He raised his glass.

"Everyone, may I have your attention?""

The room fell silent.

Graham smiled.

"Today is a special day for the Mercer family. After many years of waiting, our family is finally welcoming the next generation.""

Camille lowered her eyes modestly.

Roland placed an arm around her.

Graham continued.

"And I am delighted to announce that my son Roland will soon become the father of a beautiful baby boy.""

Applause erupted.

Camille pressed a hand to her mouth.

Roland kissed her forehead.

Then Graham looked directly at me.

"And I believe Evelyn has something important to contribute to this wonderful occasion.""

The room quieted.

Roland held out his hand.

"Your documents, Evelyn.""

I didn't move.

Instead, I looked at the crowd.

Then I looked at Graham.

"Before I hand over anything, I have one question.""

Graham's smile stiffened.

"What is it?""

I placed my handbag on a nearby table.

"Does everyone here know who the baby's biological father is?""

The applause died instantly.

Camille's hand flew to her stomach.

Roland's expression went blank.

And Graham lowered his glass.

"Evelyn," he said quietly, "I suggest you choose your next words very carefully.""

I smiled.

"That's exactly what I've been doing.""

May you like

Then the front doors opened.

And Alistair walked into the room.
