Chapter 10: The Truth That Finally Came Home

For several seconds, nobody breathed.

The woman standing beside the black sedan looked like a memory that had escaped from the past.

The same dark hair.

The same eyes Cody had inherited.

The same face Emmett had spent sixteen years believing he would never see again.

Laura.

Cody stared.

Not like he recognized her.

Like his mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

"No.""

The word came from him quietly.

Then louder.

"No.""

The woman took one step forward.

"Cody.""

He backed away.

"Don't.""

Her face broke.

A mother hearing fear in her child's voice.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

His voice shook.

"You don't get to say my name like nothing happened.""

Nobody moved.

Even Malcolm's men, hidden in the trees, stayed silent.

Because this was no longer about power.

This was about a son standing in front of the mother he had buried his entire life.

Laura looked at him.

"I thought you were dead.""

Cody laughed bitterly.

"Funny.""

She flinched.

"Because that's what I thought about you.""

The words landed harder than any weapon.

I looked at Laura carefully.

For years, I had imagined Cody's mother.

A woman who died young.

A woman who left behind a child who needed someone else to raise him.

I never imagined she would be standing there.

Alive.

Emmett stepped forward.

"Laura.""

She looked at him.

And something passed between them.

Years of pain.

Years of unanswered questions.

"You shouldn't have come," Emmett said.

She looked at him sadly.

"I had to.""

"Malcolm found you.""

"No.""

Her eyes moved toward Patrick.

Everyone followed.

Patrick went pale.

"What?""

Laura's voice was quiet.

"He found me because you led him here.""

The silence returned.

I looked at Patrick.

"How?""

Patrick looked away.

That was enough.

Laura continued.

"Patrick wasn't working for Malcolm.""

She paused.

"He was working for Shawn.""

Cody froze.

"What?""

Patrick closed his eyes.

And for the first time, he looked tired.

Not guilty.

Not afraid.

Just exhausted.

"I didn't know how else to protect you.""

Cody stared at him.

"Protect me?""

Patrick looked at him.

"I failed.""

The words shocked everyone.

Because Patrick Bannon never admitted failure.

Not once.

"I was there the night your father died," Patrick said.

Cody stopped breathing.

"I know.""

"No.""

Patrick shook his head.

"You don't.""

He looked at the ground.

"I was there after.""

Nobody spoke.

"Shawn called me before it happened.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why?""

Patrick swallowed.

"Because he knew Malcolm was going after him.""

Cody whispered:

"Then why didn't you stop him?""

Patrick looked at him.

"Because I tried.""

A bitter laugh escaped.

"And I failed.""

He looked toward Laura.

"Your mother was supposed to disappear with you.""

Laura nodded.

"That was the plan.""

I looked between them.

"Wait.""

Everyone turned toward me.

"You knew?""

Patrick looked ashamed.

"Yes.""

"All of you?""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"Not everyone.""

His eyes moved toward Emmett.

"Only the people Shawn trusted.""

Emmett looked away.

Patrick continued.

"Shawn discovered Malcolm had been building a secret network inside the family. Money. Blackmail. Deals with people who had no loyalty except to power.""

Daniel nodded.

"He was collecting evidence.""

Patrick looked at him.

"Yes.""

"Why didn't Shawn go public?""

"Because Malcolm had insurance.""

Cody frowned.

"What kind of insurance?""

Patrick looked at him.

"You.""

The word hit him.

"Me?""

"Malcolm knew Shawn loved you more than anything.""

Patrick's voice lowered.

"He threatened you.""

Laura closed her eyes.

"He said if Shawn talked, Cody would disappear.""

Cody looked at his mother.

"And you left me?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I left so you could live.""

The answer was simple.

But not easy.

"I watched you grow up from a distance.""

Cody stared.

"All these years?""

"Every birthday.""

"Every Christmas.""

"Every first day of school.""

His face broke.

"Then why didn't you come back?""

Laura looked at Emmett.

"Because Malcolm made sure I couldn't.""

Emmett finally spoke.

"He found out Laura survived.""

Everyone looked at him.

"He spent years trying to find her.""

"Why?""

"Because Laura had the final piece.""

Daniel reached into his coat.

"The evidence.""

Everyone turned.

He pulled out a small drive.

"I didn't lose the letter.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

Daniel looked at us.

"The letter was a decoy.""

Cody stared.

"What?""

"Shawn knew someone would try to take it.""

Daniel smiled sadly.

"He was smarter than everyone gave him credit for.""

He handed the drive to Cody.

"Your father hid the truth where nobody would think to look.""

Cody looked confused.

"Where?""

Daniel looked at the index cards.

"The drawings.""

I felt cold.

The drawings.

All those years.

All those cards.

Cody understood first.

"No.""

Daniel nodded.

"Your father knew you noticed things.""

Cody picked up one of his cards.

"The details.""

"Exactly.""

Emmett took one.

"Each drawing contains something.""

Cody looked through the stack.

"Numbers.""

He turned another card.

"Dates.""

Another.

"Names.""

I watched him.

The boy everyone underestimated had been carrying the answer the entire time.

Malcolm had wanted to control him.

But Shawn had trusted him.

Because Cody was never just a child.

He was the person Shawn believed would find the truth.

Cody connected the cards across the table.

The patterns formed.

A location.

A date.

A name.

His hands stopped.

"What?""

I stepped closer.

"What is it?""

He looked up.

His face was pale.

"It's not Malcolm.""

Everyone went still.

"What?""

Cody pointed at the final card.

"The person who arranged everything.""

He looked at Patrick.

Then at Emmett.

Then at Daniel.

"He wanted us to think it was Malcolm.""

The room became silent.

"Who?""

Cody turned the card around.

On the back was a name.

A name none of us expected.

Daniel's face changed.

"No.""

Emmett grabbed the card.

His expression hardened.

Because he knew.

"Impossible.""

I looked at them.

"Who?""

Emmett whispered:

"My father.""

Nobody moved.

The final secret.

The one beneath all the others.

The feud.

The lies.

The war between families.

It wasn't started by Malcolm.

It wasn't started by Shawn.

It began with the man who built everything.

The first Bannon.

The man who taught his sons that power mattered more than love.

The man who had been dead for ten years.

Or so everyone thought.

Patrick looked toward the road.

"I knew.""

Everyone turned.

"What?""

He looked broken.

"I knew there was someone else.""

"Who?""

Patrick swallowed.

"I saw him.""

My voice dropped.

"Saw who?""

Patrick looked at the darkness beyond the trees.

"The night Shawn died.""

A figure appeared near the road.

An old man.

Walking slowly.

Everyone froze.

Because even after ten years...

Everyone knew that face.

Malcolm whispered:

"Father.""

The old man stopped several feet away.

No weapons.

No guards.

No fear.

Just a man who had spent years hiding behind the shadows.

"Hello, Malcolm.""

The voice was calm.

Too calm.

The man looked at Cody.

Then at Emmett.

Then at Laura.

Finally, at me.

"Interesting.""

Nobody spoke.

The old man smiled.

"All this time, everyone blamed the wrong people.""

Emmett stepped forward.

"You destroyed your own family.""

The old man shrugged.

"I built it.""

"No.""

Emmett's voice was cold.

"You built a prison.""

The old man looked at Cody.

"Your father was weak.""

Cody's hands clenched.

"He loved people.""

"Exactly.""

The old man smiled.

"That was his weakness.""

Cody stepped forward.

"No.""

Everyone looked at him.

His voice was steady.

"My father was the strongest person here.""

The old man laughed.

"You think love makes people strong?""

Cody looked at the drawings.

At the cards.

At everything his father left behind.

"Yes.""

A pause.

"Because even when you tried to erase him, he still won.""

For the first time, the old man's expression changed.

Fear.

Small.

But real.

Because he realized something.

The boy he underestimated had inherited the one thing power couldn't control.

The truth.

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

The evidence on the drive.

The financial records.

The messages.

Everything Shawn had spent years collecting finally came into the light.

Malcolm was arrested.

The old man who started the war was arrested too.

Patrick cooperated.

Not because it erased what he did.

It didn't.

Some wounds don't disappear.

Some betrayals don't become smaller because someone explains them.

Months later, I stood outside Cody's graduation ceremony.

He wore a suit.

A real one.

Not the oversized one Patrick bought him years earlier.

He looked older.

Stronger.

Not because he had discovered his bloodline.

Because he had discovered himself.

Laura sat beside Emmett.

They still had years of pain to work through.

But they had time.

That was something they never thought they would have.

Cody walked toward me afterward.

"You know something?""

"What?""

He smiled.

"I used to think family was the people who shared your blood.""

I smiled.

"And now?""

He looked around.

At Laura.

At Emmett.

At me.

"Family is the people who choose you.""

I hugged him.

And for the first time in years, nobody was running.

Not from the past.

Not from the truth.

May you like

Not from each other.

Because the secret that destroyed two families was finally the thing that saved them.
