Chapter 7: The Enemy Who Saved Me

For ten seconds after the call ended, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Victoria.

Not the employees standing frozen outside my office after the power returned.

Not even Ryan, who had somehow arrived without me noticing.

The only thing I could hear was my own breathing.

Michael.

My brother’s voice.

Alive.

Real.

After twenty-five years of believing I would never hear him again, I had heard one word.

My name.

And then he had warned me.

Don’t trust Victoria.

I looked at the message still glowing on my computer screen.

*THE PERSON YOU THINK IS YOUR ENEMY IS THE ONLY ONE TELLING THE TRUTH.*

My eyes moved toward Victoria.

She stood completely still.

No anger.

No panic.

Almost like she expected this.

“You heard him,” I said.

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“You knew he would call.””

“No.””

“You knew he was alive.””

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“And you didn’t tell me.””

Her expression changed.

A small crack.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I was exhausted.

“Do you understand how meaningless that sentence sounds now?””

Victoria looked down.

“Yes.””

That surprised me.

She didn’t defend herself.

She didn’t argue.

She just accepted it.

Ryan stepped into the office.

“Lisa.””

I turned.

“What are you doing here?””

“I followed you.””

“Of course you did.””

His face tightened.

“I was worried.””

“Were you worried about me?””

The question hit him.

Because he knew what I meant.

Or maybe because he knew what I remembered.

His mother.

The baton.

The staircase.

The moment he chose not to move.

“I know you don’t believe me.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I believe exactly what I saw.””

He lowered his head.

Victoria looked between us.

“You don’t have time for this.””

I turned.

“Excuse me?””

She pointed toward the computer.

“Whoever sent that message has access to your internal systems.””

“That’s impossible.””

“It shouldn’t be.””

I walked to my desk.

My desk.

The place where I had built everything.

“How?””

Victoria opened the folder again.

“Someone installed a hidden access point six months ago.””

“When?””

“The same week I took over operations.””

I looked at her.

“So you knew?””

“I found it.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was trying to trace it.””

“You had six months.””

“Yes.””

“And in those six months, someone was inside my company?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I turned away.

I felt something strange.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Betrayal had become too familiar.

It was almost routine.

“Show me.””

Victoria opened a file.

Inside was a list of access logs.

Names.

Dates.

Times.

Then one name appeared again and again.

Rachel Morgan.

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Ryan looked at the screen.

“Lisa.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Not again.””

Victoria looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at the name.

Rachel.

My best friend.

The woman who knew my childhood stories.

The woman who knew how much I missed my brother.

The woman who hugged me at my wedding.

The woman who cried with me when my father died.

I remembered her saying:

“You deserve someone who chooses you.””

The irony almost made me sick.

“She was inside my systems.””

“Yes,” Victoria said.

“How long?””

“From the beginning.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria hesitated.

“She helped create the company structure.””

I frowned.

“Rachel helped me start.””

“Yes.””

“Are you saying she was involved before I even knew what was happening?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

Ryan did.

“She was assigned to you.””

I turned sharply.

“What?””

He looked guilty.

“Your father asked her to watch over you.””

“Like you?””

“Yes.””

I stared at both of them.

“Was anyone in my life real?””

Nobody spoke.

That silence hurt more than an answer.

I left the office.

I didn’t know where I was going.

I just needed air.

The hallway felt endless.

Employees looked away as I walked past.

They had heard enough.

They knew something was wrong.

Everyone always knew before me.

Outside the building, rain had started falling.

I stood beneath the entrance.

No umbrella.

No plan.

Just rain.

Then Ryan came outside.

“Lisa.””

I didn’t turn.

“Go away.””

“I know you hate me.””

“I don’t hate you.””

That surprised him.

I continued:

“Hate requires caring.””

He went quiet.

“I’m sorry.””

I closed my eyes.

The words I had waited years to hear.

The words that should have mattered.

But they came too late.

“Sorry for what?””

“For everything.””

“No.””

I turned.

“Be specific.””

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry I let my mother hurt you.””

Rain fell between us.

“I’m sorry I lied about Michael.””

“I’m sorry I let you believe our marriage happened naturally.””

My chest tightened.

“But I need you to know something.””

“What?””

“I never lied about loving you.””

I looked away.

Because that was the most painful possibility.

That someone could love you and still destroy you.

“Did you marry me because you loved me?””

He hesitated.

The hesitation was enough.

“Answer.””

“At first…”

I nodded slowly.

“At first.””

“Yes.””

“What changed?””

He looked broken.

“Meeting you.””

I said nothing.

“Lisa, I was supposed to protect you. I was supposed to watch from a distance.””

“But?””

“But then I actually knew you.””

His voice softened.

“You weren’t a mission anymore.””

I looked at him.

“You were my wife.””

The words landed.

But they didn’t repair anything.

“I needed you on the staircase.””

His face fell.

“I know.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t.””

My voice shook.

“I needed you to be my husband for five seconds.””

He looked down.

“And you weren’t.””

The silence after that was brutal.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Tell me.””

His voice was urgent.

“Lisa, we found something.””

“What?””

“Your brother’s location.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

“An abandoned military storage facility outside the city.””

Ryan immediately looked up.

“When?””

“Twenty minutes ago.””

Victoria stepped outside.

“What happened?””

I looked at both of them.

“Michael.””

Everyone went still.

Daniel continued.

“But Lisa…”

“What?””

“We also found evidence that someone else is there.””

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Evelyn Bennett.””

My blood ran cold.

Ryan’s face changed.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because she left the house.””

“When?””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“Lisa, there’s more.””

“What?””

“We recovered security footage from the facility.””

“Of Evelyn?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

The answer came quietly.

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother is dead.””

“Lisa…”

“No.””

“I’m sending the footage.””

My phone buzzed.

I opened the file.

The video was grainy.

Dark.

But clear enough.

A woman entered the storage facility.

Older.

Walking slowly.

Carrying a folder.

I stared.

Because I knew her.

Not from memory.

From photographs.

From documents.

From the woman who had been sitting behind my desk.

The woman everyone connected to my company.

Victoria whispered:

“No.””

Ryan stepped closer.

His face went pale.

Because he recognized her too.

The woman on the screen turned toward the camera.

And for one second, her face was visible.

Then the footage froze.

A name appeared.

*ELEANOR BENNETT.*

My hands started shaking.

“Who is Eleanor Bennett?””

Nobody answered.

Then Victoria spoke.

Her voice barely audible.

“She’s not your biological mother.””

I looked at her.

“Then who is she?””

Victoria swallowed.

“She’s Ryan’s mother.””

I stared.

“What?””

Victoria looked at me.

“The woman you know as Evelyn Bennett…”

She pointed at the screen.

“…has been using a false identity for decades.””

The room went silent.

My husband’s mother.

The woman who attacked me.

The woman who controlled the charity.

The woman everyone thought they knew.

Was someone else entirely.

Then Daniel sent one final message.

A photograph from inside the storage facility.

Michael standing in the corner.

Alive.

And beside him…

was Evelyn.

But she wasn’t holding a weapon.

She wasn’t threatening him.

She was crying.

And Michael was holding her hand.

Under the image was one sentence.

*Lisa, Evelyn Bennett is not the person who betrayed your family.*

May you like

A second message appeared.

*She is the person who has been trying to expose the real traitor.*
