Chapter 6: The Truth Victor Buried

Victor Hayes stood in the doorway like he had never left.

Like he wasn’t the reason my life had fallen apart.

Like he wasn’t the man who had spent seven years hiding behind lies.

He wore a dark suit.

The same kind of suit he always wore.

Perfectly pressed.

Perfectly controlled.

Even now, standing in his daughter’s home after breaking in, he looked calm.

That scared me more than anger would have.

Emily stepped in front of me.

“Victor.””

His eyes moved to her.

Then to me.

A small smile appeared on his face.

“Daniel.””

I felt my fists tighten.

“You broke into your daughter’s house?””

Victor looked almost offended.

“Broke in?””

He glanced around.

“Emily still has a habit of leaving the back door unlocked.””

Emily’s voice shook.

“You followed him.””

Victor tilted his head.

“I was concerned.””

“Concerned?””

She laughed bitterly.

“You threatened him.””

Victor looked at me.

“Did I?””

I pulled out my phone.

“The messages.””

He smiled.

“Messages can be misunderstood.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

After everything.

After the fear.

After the years.

He was still pretending.

“You ruined my family.””

Victor’s expression changed slightly.

Not guilt.

Annoyance.

“Your family was already falling apart.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Victor ignored her.

“You were young, Daniel. Emotional. Unprepared.””

My jaw tightened.

“You don’t get to talk about my family.””

Victor walked farther into the room.

“You think I’m the villain because you only know half the story.””

I looked at Emily.

Then back at him.

“Then tell me the other half.””

Victor smiled.

“I will.””

He pointed toward the folder on the table.

“But not because you deserve answers.””

A pause.

“Because Lily deserves protection.””

The way he said her name made my stomach turn.

Like she was an object.

A possession.

Not a child.

“You don’t get to use her name.””

Victor looked at me.

“You always were dramatic.””

Emily’s face hardened.

“Leave.””

Victor looked at his daughter.

For the first time, his calm expression cracked.

“You really chose him?””

Emily stared back.

“I chose my daughter.””

Silence.

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t understand what you gave up.””

Emily laughed quietly.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I understand exactly what I gave up.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I gave up living in fear.””

I watched her.

Because that wasn’t the Emily I remembered.

The Emily I remembered was kind.

Gentle.

Always trying to keep peace.

But this woman?

This woman had survived.

Victor looked at me.

“You think she left because she loved you?””

I didn’t answer.

“She left because she knew the truth.””

“What truth?””

Victor walked closer.

“You’re not as innocent as you pretend.””

Emily immediately stepped between us.

“Don’t.””

Victor continued.

“Tell him.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Tell me what?””

Emily looked away.

That scared me.

Because I had seen that look before.

The look people get when they’re carrying something painful.

“Emily.””

She closed her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

Victor smiled.

“But she didn’t.””

I turned toward him.

“Why?””

“Because she knew you would leave.””

I felt a sharp pain in my chest.

“What are you talking about?””

Victor reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

And placed it on the table.

“Open it.””

Emily’s face went pale.

“No.””

Victor looked at her.

“You don’t get to protect him anymore.””

I stared at the envelope.

“What is that?””

Emily whispered:

“Daniel…”

Her voice was full of fear.

I opened it.

Inside was an old newspaper clipping.

A photograph.

A police report.

My hands froze.

Because I recognized the picture.

It was me.

Years ago.

Before Emily.

Before Lily.

Before I became a father.

The headline read:

*LOCAL MAN INVOLVED IN FATAL ACCIDENT CLEARED AFTER INVESTIGATION.*

I stopped breathing.

Victor watched my reaction.

“You never told her.””

I looked at Emily.

“Tell me what?””

She looked like she was about to cry.

“Daniel…”

Victor answered for her.

“He killed someone.””

The room went silent.

My face burned.

“That’s not what happened.””

Victor smiled.

“But it’s what people will remember.””

Emily grabbed the papers.

“Stop.””

Victor looked at her.

“You know I’m right.””

I stared at the report.

Memories I had buried came rushing back.

The rain.

The headlights.

The sound of the crash.

The hospital.

The police questions.

The months of nightmares.

The investigation that cleared me.

The years I spent trying to forget.

I looked at Victor.

“You knew about this.””

“Of course.””

“How?””

“I looked.””

His answer was simple.

Cold.

“You investigated me.””

Victor didn’t deny it.

“I needed to know who was raising my granddaughter.””

I laughed.

“Your granddaughter?””

“You think blood doesn’t matter?””

Emily stepped forward.

“Lily is not yours to control.””

Victor’s face hardened.

“She carries my family name.””

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“She carries mine.””

“And Daniel’s.””

Her words landed.

Because she had chosen.

Finally.

Victor looked at me.

“You should ask yourself why Emily never told you.””

I looked at her.

“Is it true?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.””

The word hurt.

Not because I didn’t know.

Because I knew she was afraid.

“What happened?””

Emily sat down slowly.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“After Lily’s surgery.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because I needed you to know before everything changed.””

“What changed?””

Emily looked at Victor.

“He found out I was planning to come back.””

Victor said nothing.

Emily continued.

“He threatened to expose you.””

“Expose me for something I was cleared for?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed him?””

She looked at me.

“No.””

A tear fell down her face.

“I believed what he could do.””

I stayed silent.

Because I understood.

Not because I agreed.

But because I understood fear.

She had been alone.

She had been manipulated.

And she had made choices while trying to protect our daughter.

Victor stepped closer.

“You see?””

He looked at me.

“This is why I stayed away.””

I frowned.

“You stayed away?””

“Yes.””

The confidence in his voice made my skin crawl.

“I watched from a distance.””

“You watched?””

“I made sure Lily was safe.””

Emily laughed.

A painful laugh.

“You mean you made sure Lily belonged to you.””

Victor ignored her.

“I could have taken her.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

“I had the evidence.””

He pointed toward the report.

“I had the resources.””

Emily’s voice became sharp.

“But you didn’t.””

Victor looked at her.

“Because you begged me.””

Silence.

I looked at Emily.

Her face changed.

And I knew.

There was something else.

Something worse.

“You begged him?””

Emily nodded slowly.

“I did.””

“Why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because he threatened to make sure you never saw Lily again.””

I felt my chest tighten.

Victor smiled.

“And I kept my promise.””

I stepped toward him.

“You’re sick.””

For the first time, his expression changed.

Anger.

Real anger.

“You have no idea what I protected that girl from.””

I pointed at the door.

“Get out.””

Victor looked at me.

“You think this ends because you found Emily?””

He walked toward the exit.

“You think your little reunion changes anything?””

He stopped.

Then looked back.

“Daniel.””

I said nothing.

His voice lowered.

“The hearing device.””

My heart stopped.

“What about it?””

Victor smiled.

“You really think Emily paid for that?””

Emily froze.

I looked at her.

“Emily?””

She looked terrified.

Victor continued.

“Ask her who actually approved the funding.””

The room became silent.

Because I knew that expression.

The same fear I saw when she opened the door.

The same fear she had carried for seven years.

Victor walked away.

But before he left, he said one final thing.

“Ask her why Lily was chosen.””

The door closed.

And suddenly, the house felt colder.

I turned toward Emily.

“What did he mean?””

She didn’t answer.

“Emily.””

She looked at me.

And the fear in her eyes told me something.

There was still a secret.

A bigger one.

She sat down.

Then whispered:

“Daniel…”

I waited.

Her voice trembled.

“The hearing device wasn’t just a gift for Lily.””

My heart sank.

“What was it?””

Emily looked at the floor.

“It was part of a program.””

“What program?””

She looked up at me.

“A program that Victor used to find families like ours.””

I stared at her.

“Families like ours?””

She nodded.

“And Lily wasn’t the only child involved.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Because suddenly, the miracle I had celebrated that morning felt different.

Not less beautiful.

Not less important.

But complicated.

Emily reached for my hand.

And whispered the words that changed everything.

“Daniel…”

“He didn’t help Lily hear your voice.””

May you like

A pause.

“He helped create a reason to take her away.””
