Chapter 7: The Father They Tried to Silence

The headlights swept across the mansion's front windows, illuminating Vanessa's terrified reflection.

Robert Reed had returned.

For several seconds, she stood motionless in the master bedroom, clutching the phone that carried Stephen Caldwell's latest warning.

*Robert is on his way to the mansion. Make sure he never reaches the meeting tomorrow.*

She read the message again.

Then she heard the front door open downstairs.

“Marcus?”” Robert called.

“Are you here?””

Vanessa hurried toward the bedroom door.

She couldn't allow the two men to speak alone. If Robert showed Marcus the original succession agreement, if he explained the suspicious transactions, if he revealed what he had discovered about Northbridge Advisory Group, the entire plan could collapse before morning.

She reached the staircase just as Marcus appeared at the bottom.

His father stood inside the foyer, leaning on his cane. His face was bruised, and his dark overcoat hung loosely over his shoulders.

For a moment, neither man moved.

Then Marcus crossed the foyer.

“Dad.””

Robert looked at him carefully.

“You look terrible.””

Marcus let out a broken laugh.

“I deserve that.””

Robert's expression remained guarded.

“Why did you call me back here?””

“Because there's something you need to see.””

Marcus reached for his father's injured hand, then stopped before touching it.

“May I?””

Robert looked down at the offered hand.

After a long pause, he allowed Marcus to help him remove his coat.

Vanessa watched from the staircase, her stomach tightening.

This was not how the evening was supposed to unfold.

She had expected Marcus to remain furious, Robert to stay away, and the board to suspend both men before they could compare evidence.

Instead, the two people she had spent months keeping apart were standing together again.

Marcus guided his father toward the study.

“There's a recording of what happened yesterday. I watched it. Daniel has a copy, too.””

Robert nodded.

“I know.””

Marcus stopped.

“You know?””

“Daniel called me. He said you had finally seen it.””

Marcus lowered his head.

“I should have watched it before I touched you.””

“Yes,” Robert replied.

“You should have.””

The bluntness hurt, but Marcus accepted it.

“I don't expect you to forgive me. I just need you to know that I'm going to correct what I did.””

Robert studied his son.

“How?””

“By telling the truth. All of it.””

Vanessa hurried down the remaining stairs.

“Marcus, we need to talk privately.””

He turned toward her.

“Not now.””

“It's about the baby.””

Robert immediately looked at her stomach.

“Are you all right, Vanessa?””

She had not expected him to ask.

For a moment, her rehearsed expression faltered.

“I'm fine,” she said.

“Have you seen your doctor?””

“Yes.””

“Good. If anything is wrong, please let Daniel know. I don't want the baby caught in the middle of this.””

Vanessa felt a flash of shame so sharp that she almost stepped backward.

Robert was still treating her with more kindness than she deserved.

She hated him for it.

“Your concern is touching,” she said coldly.

“But I don't need anything from you.””

Robert nodded.

“Then we have that much in common.””

Marcus looked between them.

“Dad, I found something else. The board has received documents accusing us of financial misconduct. Someone used my electronic signature to approve payments to Northbridge.””

Robert's expression hardened.

“Do you have the original records?””

“Evelyn is preserving them.””

“Good. And Stephen?””

Marcus hesitated.

“I believe he's involved.””

Robert's eyes narrowed.

“Believe?””

“I heard Vanessa speaking to him. They discussed the transfers and an emergency directive designed to remove me from the company.””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

Robert slowly turned toward her.

“Is that true?””

She lifted her chin.

“You have no right to interrogate me.””

“I have every right to ask why someone is using my son's signature to move money out of a company I built.””

“You built it for yourself,” Vanessa snapped.

“You never intended to let Marcus have anything that wasn't under your control.””

Robert stared at her.

“I gave him the company.””

“You gave him a title!””

“I gave him operational authority, a substantial ownership interest, and the responsibility to lead thousands of employees. I retained certain voting protections because I wanted the company to survive if something happened to me.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You always have an excuse.””

“No,” Robert said quietly.

“I have documents. There's a difference.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Vanessa, did you help Stephen transfer the money?””

She looked at him.

“After everything we've been through, you're choosing him over me?””

“I'm choosing the truth.””

Her eyes filled.

“You promised to protect me.””

“I promised to protect our family. I never promised to protect you from the consequences of your own actions.””

Vanessa recoiled as though he had struck her.

Robert turned toward the study.

“Marcus, we need to contact Daniel. The board meeting is at nine, and we cannot allow anyone to destroy the original records.””

“I already called him. He's on his way.””

Robert nodded.

Then he stopped.

“Where's Grace?””

Vanessa's shoulders stiffened.

“Why?””

“Because she was in the foyer yesterday. She may have witnessed something important.””

“She knows nothing.””

Robert studied her.

“That's not what I asked.””

Vanessa forced a smile.

“She's upstairs, I think.””

“Then I'd like to speak with her.””

“No.””

The answer came so quickly that everyone fell silent.

Vanessa tried to recover.

“I mean, she's working. You shouldn't involve the staff in a private family dispute.””

Robert's gaze remained fixed on her.

“Grace has worked in this house for eleven years. She has seen more of this family than most people. If she witnessed something relevant, she deserves the opportunity to tell the truth.””

Vanessa's hands curled into fists.

“You're not going to use my employee against me.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Your employee?””

She looked away.

Robert noticed the mistake but said nothing.

Instead, he took out his phone and called Grace.

She answered after two rings.

“Mr. Reed?””

“Grace, I'm back at the house. Could you come to the study, please?””

A pause.

Then she whispered, “Are you safe?””

Robert glanced at Marcus.

“Yes. Why?””

“I'm coming.””

The call ended.

Vanessa turned toward the hallway.

“I need to check on something upstairs.””

Marcus moved to block her path.

“Stay here.””

She stared at him.

“Excuse me?””

“I want you to stay here until Daniel arrives.””

“You can't order me around!””

“No. But I can ask you not to leave while we're trying to establish what happened.””

Vanessa laughed without humor.

“You sound just like your father.””

Marcus looked at Robert.

“Maybe I should have listened to him more often.””

For the first time that evening, Robert's expression softened.

A few minutes later, Grace entered the study.

She looked exhausted, and her hands trembled as she closed the door.

“Mr. Robert,” she whispered.

Robert rose from his chair.

“Grace, are you all right?””

She looked at Vanessa, who stood near the bookcase.

“I don't know, sir.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Grace took a breath.

“Mrs. Reed told me that if I spoke to you about yesterday, I'd lose my job. She said she'd make sure nobody in Atlanta would hire me again.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“That's a lie.””

Grace flinched.

Robert raised a hand.

“Let her speak.””

Grace swallowed.

“I heard Mrs. Reed on the phone before the incident. She said the plan had to happen before the meeting.

She said that once Mr. Marcus threw you out, you wouldn't be able to interfere.””

Marcus stared at his wife.

“Is that true?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Grace continued.

“I recorded part of the conversation. I gave the recording to Mr. Robert last night.””

Robert reached into his coat and placed the small recorder on the desk.

“Daniel has the original file now. The recording will be preserved.””

Vanessa lunged toward the desk.

“Give me that!””

Marcus caught her wrist.

“Don't.””

She struggled.

“You don't understand what that recording will do!””

Marcus released her as soon as she stopped pulling.

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa stared at him, breathing hard.

For several seconds, she appeared ready to confess everything.

Instead, she looked at Robert.

“You think you've won?””

Robert's expression remained calm.

“No. I think we've finally stopped pretending.””

Vanessa backed toward the door.

“You'll regret this.””

She turned and hurried out of the study.

Marcus started after her, but Robert caught his sleeve.

“Let her go.””

“Dad, she could destroy the evidence.””

“Then we protect the evidence. We don't chase her around the house.””

Marcus stopped.

Robert's advice was simple, but it reminded him how much he had forgotten about leadership while trying to prove himself.

Daniel arrived fifteen minutes later with a forensic accountant and a legal assistant.

They secured the recorder, collected copies of the security footage, and documented the original documents from Robert's briefcase.

Evelyn joined by video call, confirming that she had preserved the company's payment records and the suspicious electronic authorizations.

For the first time, the investigation was moving forward with evidence rather than accusations.

But the relief lasted only until Daniel opened an email from the board secretary.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” Robert asked.

Daniel turned the laptop toward them.

The board had received a second complaint.

This one alleged that Robert had deliberately fabricated evidence to conceal his own financial misconduct. It also claimed that Marcus had threatened employees who questioned the payments.

Attached were edited audio clips, selected emails, and copies of financial records arranged to suggest a pattern of corruption.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“They're trying to make us look like we're working together to hide something.””

Daniel nodded.

“Someone has anticipated our defense.””

Robert examined the attachments.

“These are fragments of genuine documents. Whoever assembled them had access to the company's internal files.””

“Stephen,” Marcus said.

“Possibly,” Daniel replied.

“But we cannot prove that yet.””

Robert leaned back.

“Then we need to identify the source before the meeting.””

Evelyn's voice came through the laptop.

“There may be another problem. The transfer system shows a pending transaction scheduled for early tomorrow morning.””

Marcus looked up.

“How much?””

“Six million dollars.””

The room went silent.

“Where is it going?”” Robert asked.

Evelyn checked the record.

“To a private account connected to Northbridge Advisory Group.””

Daniel immediately reached for his phone.

“We need to contact the bank and request an emergency hold based on suspected fraud.””

“I'll send the documentation,” Evelyn said.

Marcus stared at the transaction details.

The transfer was scheduled for 7:15 a.m.

Less than two hours before the board meeting.

He looked at his father.

“They're trying to move the money before we can stop them.””

Robert nodded grimly.

“And if the money disappears, they'll claim we authorized it.””

Daniel began making calls.

Marcus watched the progress bar as Evelyn uploaded the transaction records.

Then an error message appeared.

*Authorization required. Access denied.*

Evelyn tried again.

The same message appeared.

“They've revoked my access,” she said.

“Someone has changed the permissions on the treasury system.””

Marcus stood.

“Can you restore them?””

“Not without administrator approval.””

“Who has administrator authority?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“Stephen Caldwell. You. And your father.””

Marcus felt a cold wave move through him.

His father had been locked out of the mansion, and Marcus's access had been compromised by documents bearing his own signature.

Stephen was the only person who could still authorize the transfer without raising an immediate internal alert.

Robert slowly rose from his chair.

“Then we have to act before seven fifteen.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Robert, we need to be careful. If we attempt to interfere with the transaction without the bank's cooperation, we could compromise the investigation.””

“I understand.””

Marcus reached for his phone.

“I'll call Stephen.””

“No,” Robert said sharply.

Marcus stopped.

“Why?””

“Because if he knows we discovered the transfer, he'll cancel it or move the funds through another account. We need him to believe his plan is still working.””

Robert looked toward the dark window.

“Let him think we are too busy defending ourselves to stop him.””

Daniel considered the idea.

“We may be able to coordinate with the bank's fraud department without notifying the company's treasury administrators. But we'll need the original authorization records.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I can retrieve those from the compliance archive. The archive is separate from the treasury system.””

“Do it,” Daniel said.

The call ended.

Marcus turned toward his father.

“What if we fail?””

Robert looked at him.

“Then we keep fighting.””

“And if they take the company?””

“We rebuild what we can.””

Marcus swallowed.

“I don't want to lose everything.””

Robert placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Neither do I. But a company is not the same thing as a family, Marcus. And neither is worth sacrificing your integrity.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

For a moment, they stood together in the study, father and son united by the truth they had nearly allowed a lie to destroy.

Then Grace appeared at the doorway.

“Mr. Reed?””

Robert turned.

“Yes?””

She held a sealed envelope in her hand.

“I found this in the linen cupboard upstairs. Mrs. Reed must have hidden it there.””

Daniel took the envelope carefully.

The front bore the name of Reed Atlantic Holdings and the words *CONFIDENTIAL — BOARD CONTINGENCY*.

He opened it.

Inside lay a copy of the emergency directive, along with a handwritten note signed by Stephen Caldwell.

Daniel read the note once.

Then he read it again.

His face went pale.

“What is it?”” Marcus asked.

Daniel placed the note on the desk.

It contained a single sentence.

*Once the board suspends Marcus, activate the second authorization and release the funds before Robert can invoke the protective clause.*

Below it was a date from three weeks earlier.

Marcus stared at the handwriting.

He recognized it immediately.

Stephen had signed the note himself.

But the final line was even more disturbing.

It named the person who was supposed to activate the second authorization.

*Vanessa Reed.*

Robert closed his eyes briefly.

The betrayal was no longer a suspicion.

May you like

It was written in ink.

And the money was scheduled to move in less than two hours.
